Albie's ebike - my 'daily driver' project

i'm just waiting for GGoodrem to release those new BMS things and it should resolve my BMS tripping issue.

BiGH sorted out my tire rubbing issues :)

i broke an anderson connector today :( - time 2 get out the 80w soldiering iron 2nite :(
and need to re-modulate the pack

hope u disconnect the watts up/dr watson so we can try ur bike at 80v 50a :)

well just a quick update on the bike...

at the moment after riding the bike around regularly just having a few issues... first of all the rear rack... since topeak did it cheap for the support from the seat post to the rack... the support bars are bending (who makes a heavy duty rack with support bars that are bendy?!?!). Will need to get that sorted out this weekend hopefully :)

battery: after lots of regular use... the pack seems to have some dead cells... at the moment it looks as though i only have a capacity of 10aH around about before the LVC kicks in and disables the battery temporarily. Hopefully the solution to this is to use a single cell charger on the dead cells and see whats going on there. unfortunatly i won't be able to do that till i borrow BiGH charger, which will be tommorow night.

frame.... I think i've outgrown the frame... looks like i'll be going a full suspension frame and transplant the ebike parts over. I want to get one of the schwinn s40 bikes but unfortunately hard to find in australia. I'm going to drop around kmart or target hopefully on the weekend to check out some frames. Also targeting disc brake FS frames.

worse case scenario is to get a giant Sedona LX frame but really really expensive ... although thats not an FS bike... I was thinking of a GT iDrive bike but they are expensive too.

i am also still waiting on a Cycle Analyst from ebikes.ca. I did have a plug in one ordered but unfortunately it wasn't compatible with my controller so i have to for the stand alone version :(

My Currie Izip has a three prong plug female coming from the controller. I noticed the male plug has pos and neg and another pos going to the battery on\off switch. So would hte controller plug have 2 pos and 1 neg as well ? What does the charger have??? I would think the charger only has + and - but it too is a three prong female plug ? Obvioulsy I'm no electrical whiz...but thanks for any help.

Hey Albie.

I remember when I first got interested in e-bikes I really like this cheapo FS Target bike. It was called the "Triax Blade" or "Blade Triax" can't remember which way the had it on their site.

They've changed their layout now, so I can't find it, but I remember spending ages trying to find pictures of it.

Obviously it's quite a bad bike, so it's probably not suitable (aluminium etc.), but it is cheap.

ok borrowed bigh's battery pack (72v 10ah lifepo4 yesa pack). I gotta say that after this mornings ride was holy crappo... 70km/h!

yeah definitely scary and the current frame can handle it but safely... its highly suspect.

any faster that i think 60-70km on an ebike i'll have to say that you will need FS. I've sussed one out at a local kmart and will be starting to save up (bike will cost around $200 + safety modifications - another $50.00 (ie new torque arms) and rack for batteries).

Must have been cold :)

Wow that's fast, I would have loved to see the looks on other motorists faces when you zoomed past on a push bike.

So, are you planning on running it on 72V from now on?

If you are, for the love of god, be careful.

I'd be real sus about riding 70km/h on a $200 bike....

I think you need to spend $600 or so at least on a decent disc brake equipped bike.

:D

Be sure to brush your teeth after all such fast rides, to remove all the bugs caught between them.

Seriously though, fast toys are fun but you could get hurt. I'm not going to preach safety lessons to you; you ought to know them by now.

Be safe.

oh definitely i do advise everyone to be safe etc. I already drive a fast car so if i want to go really fast I do it on the track with the thing.

Like i said, it its bloody scary to go stupidly fast on a push bike without proper safety equipment (ie kevlar jacket and pants and full face helmet).

I rode home tonight on the ebike with the normal speed i do (around 50 km/h). I have to say that the extra power is great when you need it though.

As for the bike frame... I'm actually now considering a Giant Sedona bike... they have the disc brakes etc which will help

Albie, what range do you get with the x5 and your 48v 15Ah pack?

I was getting around 30km from the pack. I was also constantly running it at around 52km/h to work though. Thats probably why the duct tape packs were hot and I killed a couple of cells on the stupid thing. I currenlty get 46v now (with the dead cells) and it cuts out around 20km into a trip now... getting 9.0ah out of the pack. Originally i was getting around 12-13ah prior to the dead cells.

i'm just realising that this is becoming like an experience diary that i have with the ebike as i use it on a daily basis...

ok so the latest update is...

last night was riding home on the ebike and got a nail into the rear wheel! I didn't realise it till my tire slowly went down and was unrideable at over 25km/h+ lol

What saved my tire and a push home was the slime i was talking about a few months ago! thank god for that.

I was able to pump my tire up... then do a top up inflate at the BP and was able to ride home normally without taking out the tire and replacing the tube etc!

So having the slime in my back tire was a great idea... and yes the nail in the tire is still in there! :) (at the moment the rear tire is at the same tyre pressure i pumped it up to last night - 55psi).

bad news everyone...

the little ezip that could had a rough end this afternoon.

Was riding home and a idiot decided to do a U-turn infront of me and the ezip hit his front quarter panel and i slide across the bonnet and ended up on the tarmac.

Just have to say thank god for my helmet and long sleeve wear. Unfortunately the ezip frame is now bent and unridable.

Looks like its time for me to look for a new frame over the weekend and it looks as though a Scott Aspect 55 would be a good option. It's a hardtail although its got really decent suspension and great front disc brakes :)

Will update this thread once get the photos off the camera and also when I find a frame over the weekend.

Bummer.

Oh well, at least you did some damage to his car.

Looks like you hit at a considerable speed.

The main thing is that you're okay.

Damn. Thats a big dent in that car. There's a few people in here now that have been in accidents. How fast were you going?

Obviously, going absurdly fast on things that look like bicycles while motorists assume they go ~15-25km/h could in no way be the principal contributing factor to these crashes, dot dot dot.

I'm pretty sure Albie was seriously hauling ass, say 40+ km/h or so, thus causing the motorist to badly misjudge his U turn.

Albie,

Few questions....

1) Do you have a flashing safety light and was it on?
2) Speed you where going when the car made the U-turn?
3) Do you feel your brakes where adaquate for the speeds that your X5 can go?

Best,

1) Do you have a flashing safety light and was it on? Yeah it was on... it was also mid afternoon so there was adequate sunlight around.
2) Speed you where going when the car made the U-turn? I was 10m - 20m away when the car decided to do a U-turn. I was possibly going around 35-40km as it was slightly up a hill and my batteries have been playing up (i was running the 48v ping pack and was averaging around 40-45km/h top speed)
3) Do you feel your brakes where adaquate for the speeds that your X5 can go? Funny you ask that... the brakes we're adequate at the time as I only took the bike into the bike shop that morning to get serviced (plus get the puncture repaired I had in the rear wheel), so everything was pretty much like new on the bike. I believe even with the distance that the driver did the U-turn at the time, top spec disc brakes wouldn't have stopped me in time to do a superman over his bonnet.

Mathurin... love the ASCII drawing... you even did an AA haha :) love it :) but yeah, he didn't do a U turn at an intersection but more from a parked position and just came out. He claims that he didn't see me... even though i was in the middle of the road.

Guess what?

My dad (almost) got hit by a car this evening. He slammed on the breaks and went over the handlebars. The guy that cut him off actually called just now to see how he was and if he was going to take it further. This happened at around 25km/h, so it just goes to show you've gotta be careful at all speeds.

I think you'll find more often that not that accidents involving cars and bicycles are the fault of the driver and not the rider.

having been hit by a few cars in my time, I have to say everyone is not fun.

I've gone into the side of one on my bike ihen i was young, (my fault wasn't paying attention)
ended upon the bonnet of another- he was stationary on the wrong side of the road.
got clipped by one riding to my (now ex) girlfriend's beachouse (90k into the trip) by a learner driver on his lession. His side mirror clipped my handlebars and i fell onto the car's passenger side window - i put my elbow out, so that hit the window and scared the CRAP out of the instructor... stayed on teh road bike too!

had a few near misses - all but one on the road bike funnily enough. Mostly cars misjudging my speed (i ride that roady HARD) almost got t-boned, clipped, etc.

the only incident on the ebike was a car turning across my path in traffic while i was giong down a hill. slammed on the front brakes - 8" rotor made a good fast stop :)

I've also had near misses with cyclsits - had one on yarra blvd where he was on the wrong side of the little bike road tracky thing. i got sideways tehn went on one wheel. hehe

its all good until someone gets hurt, or someone else's property gets damaged.

At least you can get the dickweed's insurance to pay for a replacement bike and battery ... those dead prismatic cells were obviously caused by the accident, and certainly had nothing to do with screaming around at warp speed with a clyte 5x.

Seriously folks ... you are invisible.

They simply don't see you. If you think they are looking at you, you are wrong. They are looking through you.
