I have been bitten by the fat bike bug, but haven't commited to buying a frame yet. Anybody here have a pugsley or other fat bike? With all the snow we have been getting, it would have been nice to have one for this winter. I am getting the pedal bike itch again, and have been riding 3 or 4 times a week again. A fat bike would be the best addition to my stable! And of course I want to build one with a mid drive setup

Hi,
I like the fat cruiser bikes like this one. http://justbicycles.com/bike_details.ph ... me%20Green
this looks like a basman frame o_O' but the price of the bike is not even the price of the frame in holland at the factory.
I'm starting a project on a basman frame with a bmc V3. Should look like this:

and for the goody, here is a little link to their "prototype" :)

This is an awesome Fatbike thread where they end up recommending the Fatback Ti

Of particular interest to me are the 135mm no offset front hub (many use rear hubs in the front), 170mm rear no offset, and 100mm bottom bracket for chain alignment.

In learning about fat bikes I also came across Jeff Jones truss fork bike with fat front tyre.

I've been looking at Fat tyre bikes for components/design ideas for a Basman inspired frame I'm designing. I like these frames for the style and because they allow you to put electronics low in the frame, thereby lowering the center of gravity and improving handling. Or you can mount the electronics higher to look like a motorbike fuel tank.

You can tell this isn't a Basman by the seat tube, ride height, etc.

The Chinese copy explains why they're cheap, but also that model originally linked to is probably the old version and hence heavily discounted.

Thanks neuraxon77!
Yeah I've also noticed that the rear plates where the rear-wheel is fixed was quite different ;)
I would be really interested to know if this level of "similarity" were allowed in Europe.
Regards,

I love those fat bikes.
I just picked up a Specialized big hit, used and spend 800$ on components. I wish I would have spent the money on a Pugsley.

If anyone wants to trade a DH bike for a Fat bike let me know.

Not my bike but mine is similar

Fat what? Tires? Rider? What is considered fat?

Big bulbous balloon-like FAT tyres. They're usually used for riding on snow, sand etc.

Fat Bikes in this thread thus far are the Puglsey that John mentions and the Fatback Ti. Not sure if Jeff Jones with his fat truss fork and front would qualify... his is fat and skinny!

Cruiser bikes like the Basman aren't considered Fat Bikes as far as I know. Some refer to them as Beach Cruisers, but not sand cruisers.

Fatbikes look cool to me. The fattest I ever rode was a modified Schwinn stingray from the seventies. That bike got me everywhere year round. That was just a BMX bike with a home made extended fork and plastic 5 spoke rims and knobby tires. Choppers us has a bike with a large front tire, but I think it's even heavier than my Spoiler.

And they have a less expensive kit.

I wouldn't mind sticking an X5 on the back of either one and going for 78 volts.
Is that fat enough guys?

Yup, ES's own Matt.P (1000w) has a 'Fat Bike'
i jokingly refer to as 'The Jaffa Bike' Its an alloy
framed bike Matt built up-->

As with all Matt's custom builds this one is
flawless, i don't think Matt has any plans
to electrify this one, although a lil birdie
told me he will be starting a new e-bike build very soon ;)

My only beef with putting an x5 in those rims, is that they aren't meant for much speed or load. The Schwinn style rims are near junk. I wasn't all too impressed with the ones from choppersUS either. The Surly rims are better, but I don't think they would last at 30mph. I don't know of any that are welded, although the ones from fatbackbikes may be.

You would have to be off your rocker to put any hub motor over 250watt in those 20 x 4.25 rims
let alone a hunking X5  and even then i would be worried, the two sets i have here are
double walled but the join you can see daylight through ...without holding it up to the light, i have
4-5 wraps of kevlar tape around mine to help hold them together, doubt this will help one iota but it makes me feel
somewhat better, i still fear everytime i go above 40km on the cruiser that the rim will collapse, only
grace is its a rear not a front. To top it off the rubber for them is that unbalanced the wheel hops up and
down when you left it off the ground and run the motor WOT .... The Schwinn rims i have seen are only
single walled, even worse...JRH is on the money IMHO.

p.s happy to take close up macro shots of the join to reinforce the fact they are rubbish.

Has anyone tried the wider rims for that Kris Holm or other unicycles :?:

I have laced up some large marge rims, and they are plenty beef. There may be some other rims out there to be discovered too.

Ah.. Fat tires.. .. Snow.. Sand you said...

I too wish to bow publicly in the awesomeness of DB's glorious creation. Ok, now that my back friggin hurts, I wish to know what rims and tires he used on it. Surly don't make a 20 inch rim, and I need a fatty to put JRH to work with!

I have some chrome 16" moped rims here that would do the trick. The good doctor used some BMX style rims and 16x3" tires if I recall correctly.

I thought you were talking about fat bike riders as in the people who ride them are fat.

I'd qualify for that a bit. I could lose twenty pounds (if I really had the motivation, which I don't).

But that said, here's my next bike (and made in the USA). They have FAT rims with FAT spokes and FAT tires.

Worksman Industrial Tricycles. Mine won't have white tires, but it'll look similar to this. $299 bucks aint bad for American-made quality.
