The Xing 300 watt/24 volt mid drive has got to be one of the cleanest looking mid drives on the market to compete with GNG, AFT, Sunstar, and all the others. Anyone out there have any experience with this one? Joe

looks cool!

OFFTOPIC...Where in the world have all these mid drives setups popped up from? 2013..year of the middrive!

That's really clean and it looks like the same motor as the GNG! Could be cool setup whither what looks like a planetary box...

doubledipsoon, do you have a link to that kit?

Its very compairable to the Sunstar in price at $1,493 usd and that includes the battery.

The Xing would be $1,542, with their battery of course.

Yes the Xing has more power and throttle control. But the Sunstar has a much cleaner factory look. I would have to find someone who has experience with the Xing before I would put money down for it. Now if it was in the same price range of the gng, i would give it a shot.

wow lol, would rather piece together the same thing and run it at 1kW+

I agree that would be the most cost effective way of doing it. Once my sample carbon bamboo bike gets here i may be tempted in going for the sunstar kit myself. Plug and play, pedelec, and a factory look is what i want on my next ebike. Retail is not going to be cheap if i go this route though. $3500 roughly for a limited production run. But it will weigh less then 37lbs.

Haste/EvoBikeShop, Just Google search "Xing" or "Xing Bike" and you'll get the link- I've talked to Brian, the creator of Xing, and he uses a Kollmorgan motor, 400 watt, brushless, and recommends that he install the kit. He's located in Petaluma California, 50 miles north of S.F. As he puts it, "not recommended to be installed by a novice, special tools required". I think most of us could do it, tho'. At $1050, (edited 3/6/13- now $1150) it's triple the GNG kit prices, and hopefully without the catch 22s involved with those kits. I'm still waiting to hear from anyone who has installed and experienced this kit. Until then, it's all theoretical. I'll probably pull the trigger on a Xing as the spring weather brings on that ebike fever. Here's a picture of a his Xing-powered Specialized that he had on Craigslist- can't remember what he was askin', Later, Joe

Hmmm, I shall look into the build more, but from a glance it looks like a version of the ego kit, maybe an early prototype surfacing?

http://www.ego-kits.com/about-ego-kits/

This is a kollmorgen 400w motor with internal controller. Better quality but worst motor than the gng motor. Used it back in 2008, it costed about 40$ then.

I would say it was inspired by the ego kit. Trying to make an ego cheaper. The motors they say they are using aren't very expensive if you can get them. I was going to go with a MAC non hub but I couldn't get a hold of one at the time, so I went with a cyclone.

The interesting thing is the gear reduction on the front of the motor. Is is straight cut or helical gears? Is it grease filled or oil filled? How loud is it? How strong is it?

The gear reduction has always been the complaint with the cyclone motors, which are made by headway (or headline or head.. something) I believe. It is the same motor in the ego and AFT kits, so will make the same sound. It isn't overly loud, but I could handle something quieter.

Flyin monkie

On the AFT website i noticed they say the EMAX upgrade has ceramic gearbox bearings that reduce the noise and also oil in the gearbox which makes it quieter ? and also they have a noise reduction chain guard and a gearbox noise shroud coming soon ? So maybe the AFT will be quieter then the cyclone or EGO kits that use the same motors ?

AFT have done quite a bit to improve the gearbox, but it all comes at an expense. Good on them though. What is needed is helical cut gears, but I don't know if you that can be done with a planetary gear box.

Now the price has gone up on the 24v 400w XIng to $1150, thats about the same price as the 24v AFT 500w kit with EMAX upgrade pack.

Why would anyone choose the 400w xing vs the AFT 500w EMAX ?

The Xing has an uknown gearbox design, whereas the AFT uses the same headline motor and gearbox that is know to be reliable from the cyclone kits ? As well the AFT EMAX has 100w more power and higher efficnecy with ceramic bearings and low friction oil.

When the Xing kit was under $1k it was an ok deal, but still not proven to work as reliably as the cyclone style of kits like the AFT and EGO, the EGO kit doesn't even have ceramic bearings and its basicaly the same motor/gearbox as the cyclone, so i can't see how their price is so much higher ??

Gab, it sounds like you're hooked on the AFT with EMAX upgrade. Congradulations! "Why would anyone choose the 400 watt Xing vs the AFT 500 watt EMAX?" One huge reason- If you're fortunate like me, Xing's are installed free. Since I'm 50 miles away, lucky me. And there won't be any liability "out of sight/out of mind" distance problems. The Australia factor makes me a little nervous, kind of like the GNG China long distance variable. I mean, I do think the Global Economy sucks when it comes to parts and service. But don't listen to me. I've heard enough horror stories once the cash is deposited into their paypal account. Besides, why go 100 watts further into strangling your bike's power drive. Again, I've heard all the stories about crunched derailleurs and chains with high powered motors. I think it's called "taking a great idea (mid drive) and engaging it in overkill. Why do you think all the major manufacturers of mid drives keep it below 350 watts? 'Cause that's all you need for steep hills. Hey, I just want to do two 14 mile round trips a week, and get maximum range. But, to be fair, I'm sure both systems are comparable. I mean, Xing didn't start last week, and does have some history. And, finally, yes, again, the Xing is alot cooler looking.....period, and doesn't need an upgrade. To each his own and Good Luck, Joe.....
