QS Motors does a nice job with their motors (and price), but shipping adds $275+ on all of their 8kW+ BLDC hub motors, which is 30%-50% the total cost. Are there any N. American manufacturers?
Are there any North American-based 72V/96V 8kW+ BLDC hub motors manufacturers?

Nope, it's all made in China.
There used to be Falco, I think, but they were not anywhere near that power level (maybe a tenth to an eighth of that).
You may find *distributors* of the Chinese products here, that may even relabel them with their own names (like the ones that sell Crystalytes as Phoenix, etc). If they buy in bulk, they probably save on shipping, but the end total cost to you is probably similar since they will also be charging more for the motor itself even if shipping to you costs less. (and you won't know for sure that you're getting the actual product you want, since they may just buy whatever the cheapest similar-looking clone is and sell that as a QS, etc).
