battery upgrade for electric scooter

hello world,

I bought a 1000 watt 36 volt scooter from scooterwholesales.com. The scooter barely gets up to 20mph. I am looking for a way to greatly increase the speed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. With a 48V battery you would increase the top speed between 5 - 8 mph, that would be as simple as connect a 48V battery to the controller.

First You should check if the controller admit 48V, if the controller only work with 36V batteries, the HVC will cut at 42V and the 48V battery just won't work.

A motor that works with at 36V will work as well at 48V, but you should mantain the max Amps to be similar (if you upgrade the controller to a 48V one)

Anyway I doubt you will get 30mph with that scooter, maybe 25mph at 48V
 
Checking deeply the motor they use, it would be possible to reach 30mph at 48V, but I don't think it will be far safe for that frame.

Try to access the controller and look for Voltage specifications, the upgrade would be anyway as easy as new controller and battery
 
I know the controller isn't able to handle 48 volts but like I said before I want to upgrade the controller and the battery if I need to. That is not a problem. I just need to know which controller and battery should I buy.
 
That scooter needs everything replaced to actually hit 30mph... new motor, new drivetrain, new controller and most likely new batteries.

The motor cant take that much power before overheating
The motor isnt geared to hit that speed anyway, and most likely it will change with the new motor
the controller cant push that much power without overheating.
and its likely your batteries cant output that much power at once anyway.


overall... anyone that said that scooter would do 30, was lying to you. I would return it if possible, unless you're willing to make a large project out of it.
 
I´m agree with MrDude_1

You can upgrade a little the performance with a 48V battery and controller, but the rest of build are not prepared for the right response.

I'm sure you can get from 5 to 8mph more but it maybe doesn't worth for that drivetrain
 
what scooter do you all suggest getting. I don't want to spend a ton of money. I want to at least get up to 35 mph if I get a new scooter. Thank you all for your help

Well 35mph on a scooter only has 3 ways to get there:

1. Electric scooter intended for street use. They look like normal moped scooters, but they have hub motors instead of gas. You dont have your location in, but assuming you're in the USA and familiar with "normal" scooters"
2. high performance gas powered scooter.... think modded or high end goped. probably not what you want.
3. build it yourself electric... this can get expensive quick, as batterys are expensive, motors and controllers add up, and nothing will just bolt in from out of the box.

35mph is fast for a "scooter". cheapest way to get there and be stealthy, is actually an ebike... mostly because bicycles can be had cheap, kits that almost bolt on are more available, and there is alot more info to help you out on it.

Just to give you an idea of what you're getting into, I am building a 40mph scooter. Only 5mph faster than what you're asking, yet its going to cost me a ton of money. I have $500 in batteries alone. Then theres the motor, the controller, the steel/aluminum/etc to fit it all together, and about 100 hours of my time.
And my scooter already did 25mph.
 
can you give me suggestions on how to make this one go fast. I don't want to deal with the hassle of returning it. I don't really mind spending money on making it faster. I know I will have to replace a lot of parts. I'm willing to make this a project

Well the first thing you need to do, is alot of research.

You are not asking to build a beginner project. You are asking about a mid-level project, bearly one step below building an actual car or motorcycle.
There are litterally 100s of decisions you will have to make, and no one can (or should) make them for you. You need to educate yourself on whats availible, know what your skillset/tools/abilities are, and then work within them.


There is good news though! Almost all of the information you need to know, is on this site. There are builds, there are answered questions, and if you cant find the answer to a SPECIFIC question, people here will help you.
SPECIFIC questions only though.. general questions suck... because we then have to assume waaay too much.



I would suggest looking through completed stand up scooter builds, and getting an idea of what to expect. You'll notice 90% of these scooters all go 25mph or less.. most about 20. But there are a few on here that go much faster.

Your question is not specific enough to answer. It is the same as saying "If I change the engine, computer and transmission of my car, will it go faster?"
Sure it will. Because you said upgrade. If it didnt go faster, it would be a downgrade. 1mph faster is an upgrade, but you want to double the speed of it. That means about 4 times the power.

So lets just jump to your next question is "ok how do I do that?"

Educate yourself here.

There are two types of commonly used motors, brushed, and brushless. They use totally different controllers. You need to decide on one and the motor has to match.. and it has to fit. You have alot of work in front of you. To be honest, I fear it is currently beyond your abilities. There is no "here just buy this" and it will go together that fast. Like I said, this isnt a beginner project. Are you sure you want to do this? We're talking big money in parts, and no guarantee it will all work reliably when you finish.

Then you cant afford a 35mph electric scooter. That is a low price for what you're getting.
Usually its more like $1300 for a LiFe battery scooter and they still only go 20mph or so.

Just to give you an idea of what your asking for, I am using the cheapest Lipo batteries, and I still have more than $500 in batteries alone. JUST the batteries.
And batteries that could burst into flames if treated improperly, so you will never find these on a mass produced scooter.

Then theres the actual scooter.. I bought mine used, for $450 or so.. but you would spend $900 for the same scooter new.

Thats 1400, and it doesnt even go faster yet. Then theres the controller ($160), the motor($235 so far), steel/alum ($40), misc wires and such($100)

Thats $1935 and I am not even done with my project yet. I didnt include the chargers($135 icharger, $90 for two meanwell SP-500s), or anything else(welding gas was low, angle meter broke, needed 12mm drillbit, bearings for shaft, circlips, bolts, or my entire rear brake conversion) .



This is why you dont see everyone zipping around on electric scooters.... $150-$300 gets you a moped off craigslist, so they drive that.
