Looking to maybe build my brother a BBS based e-bike with a lower end hardtail... most of those I have seen have cables that exit under the BB shell which is where the motor housing would be. How do you guys handle this? Or do we need a different bike?

Usually in cases like this (if the cables will interfere with installation, or would be damaged by drive mounting, operation, etc) the cables are removed from the frame and run externally along the length of the frame and around the drive.

Since they appear to just be using fully-housed cable for the length of the run, rather than cables-and-stops (which often perform better), that's pretty easy to do.

In my bike I'd the same trouble, what I've done is measure and cut the cable at right lenght, route it (using a cable-guide for home electric wires, also routed a 4-pin cable for front light and another future use alike 5v USB), solder it (there are 8 or 9 cables, all colored different so there's no confusion) and finally cover all sparse cables using a saddleback. Now it works flawlessly and both cables are hidden and protected

If you care about warranty you may bought sparse hub cable

I had issues with clearance and internal cable routing so I had to cut a piece of the frame off, but I wired everything internally afterwards and the bike has now seen close to 2000 km, I use it almost everyday for commuting.
