Best all round light for night biking.

P7's, by their nature of 4 closely spaced LEDs, are a fairly large source and tend to throw a floody beam. If you want less flood beams look to other LEDs. The smaller the LED the better for beam formation. Aspheric Optics throw the tightest beams, but they don't collect all the LED light so their beams are not as much in total brightness but they put more on a faraway target. The good ones throw an image of the LED die on the target.

i got the light & holder only, no battery. i was planning on using lyen's dc-dc converter.

does it open? i can't for the life of me open up the front side! the back opens, of course, but how can I reach the + terminal? there appears to be a seam on the front side, but i put a crescent wrench on the flat middle and a plumbers wrench on the front to twist and only succeeded in gouging it nicely.

i'm wishing i got the battery. any suggestions stateside where to grab one?

The Australian police use a light stick of LEDs that they wave and it spells words as you wave. It'd be neat to put that on the bike constantly spinning (drill?) and have it spell things like "BIKE here don't hit me!" .

That's how LadyAda's SpokePOV works; it mounts in your wheel though. You'd have to put it on something separate if you want it on the rear or front facing directions. If you have a trike you could put the equivalent of a "continental kit" with a complete "spare wheel" back there that is actually mounted and spinning via motor (either in-wheel or a friction drive against the tire or rim), to keep the SpokePOV working.

I ended up laying out $30 for two batteries and a charger, but have since found another way... on the 'bench' at least, fyi.

Using a samsung cell phone charger (AC 110-240V in and 5V DC 0.7A) with my 20s ~80V pack, under load I'm seeing 3.1V and .7A out:

GCinDC, Does your P7 SSC flashlight more spot or flood when you go out night ride?

I found there is a new Cree XM-L and they are rated 1000 lumen guaranteed. I noticed cree xml is more
spot. I rather want 1 flashlight more flood wider easier see both sides and 2nd flashlight more spot for farther distance.

I just want compare since my magicshine is more spot and need find good flood headlight.

Here the new Cree xm-l http://www.kaidomain.com/SearchResult.aspx?SearchKey=xml&CategoryId=-1&SiteId=1

*edit* I just found candlepowerforums mentioned P7 is great floody light. That's what I am asking you about your P7 flashlight.

Awesome! Glad you found a solution. That looks amazing.

There are a million pics out there better than I could take.

I haven't done much night driving with it, but notice more of a spot than a flood. I'm no expert in lights though. I'm happy.

For 180$ i'm still REALLY SAFTISFIED with my 4 x cree P7 from Geomangear!

You can buy the individual single P7 led with reflector and PWM driver and have wide voltage range input from 6 to 18VDC. I measured that all 4 leds consume 48 Watts. not bad for all these LUMENS

A cop already said to me that he saw my ebike light at a distance equivalent to 11km

Fortunatly my LEDs are pointing to the ground.

Doc

Hi Guys,

This set up as more lighting then my car on high beam, I'm surprised that nobody don't do the same, I have ride with Doc last summer on trails the night was particularly dark and we have no difficulty seeing everything like a day ride.

Good day!

So of course a week after I finally ordered the light recommended by the OP, I see that DX has added a couple of new 900 lumen CREE LED lights. Any thoughts on these new lights?? Same price as the Spiderfire SSC P7.

Best place to get data on flashlights is candlepowerforums.com. Some of the DX lights are good, many are not so much.

AMEN,CPF has more info than any other flashlight forum.I got hooked on lights in '06 and my bank account has been empty ever since

My CFL headlight, just updated right now here:

might not be the "best" light, but it does work well enough for street-lighting conditions, and has a wide viewing angle so it helps me to be seen, as well as to see. Previous version worked fine for over a year; we'll see how the new housing and bulb hold up. :)

Big Beam: thanks much. I ordered exactly what you suggested and the improvement is wonderful.

The only thing is, one of the rear caps, the clicker switch is messed up. The light flickers and goes out. I couldn't find a replacement cap and even though there are clicker switches I'm not confident tearing into the cap so I found this pressure switch (sku 12895) that is supposed work and I have it on order.

Anyone played with the HID flashlights now starting to become popular on ebay ?

They're kinda chunky but look to put out a heap of light and good throw too

I'm sure this beam shot is not too legit and it's probably a long exposure but the throw looks good for longer distance visibility when riding at speed

BigBeam, thanks for the recommendation, I have just ordered this setup. my cycle home from the studio where I work is all along unlit roads and trails with tree cover and I mostly work late, so fingers crossed it's gonna work out for me :)

100's of lights tested in many condition's....this link deserves a perm bookmark.

Interesting, although their photos are not all very good comparisons. This pair:
http://www.wickedlasers.com/images/products/torch/Wicked_Torch_01.jpg
http://www.wickedlasers.com/images/products/torch/Wicked_Torch_02.jpg
especially, as they use a flash in the first but not in the second, so the foreground being lit by flash is damping down the camera's level a lot in the first, such that even the neon lights in the upper right are dimmed almost out of existence, compared to the view with the torch, where they are not. Since they are not dimmed out in the torch pic, but are with the flash, it implies the flash is probably much brighter than the torch is (which doesnt' seem like it should be the case, with the brightness they are claiming for it).
