Based on the fact that ALL pages respond much faster in my not-as-often-used Win7 install, I'm pretty sure my XP install has some kind of AIDS. Why I never got around to adding anything in addition to Avast, IDK, but now that it's noticeable and causing me problems, I figure I should get around to it.

So, after I reinstall XP (time to do that, anyway), what should I be using?

I herd some things about Malwarebytes being good...

Try processguard. Every process on the machine must be explicitly ratified (once). If it hasn't been ratified, it won't run.
After a short training period on the processes you will allow to run (including low level windows processes) are learned by the software.
I use it with Avast, and it is excellent.

If you want free Spybot S&D works well with Avast. Although it is a bit dated I have had good luck with these two for some years now. No infestations although a few attacks. Still Avast pro and Malwarebytes, neither of which is free would probly be better . Good luck

Yar...

Also I realized yesterday that this reinstall erased my Spore save data. FFFUUUUUUUUUUU-

Q: I'm on Vista Home P. Have used Avast Home for a couple years.
Have no anti-malware, and no operating system problems, except....

lately, DEP often shuts down Windows Movie Maker. Then the program restarts.

I use Firefox only. Is there a way to shut off Vista's DEP "feature",
or is it telling me that I have some sort of malware in the computer?

It boots from cold, ready to roll in about ninety to 110 seconds, tops.
It's a two year old HP home-grade computer.

Any advice? Is malware a problem with Vista working well with Avast?
I sure do like Avast, btw!

Thanks all.

Iunuh. Generally, I'm inclined to blame any odd changes not initiated by the user on malware. And since Avast is merely an anti-virus, it doesn't handle spyware and the like, which, really, is all I really care about; pretty much every virus problem can be fixed with an OS reinstall (assuming it didn't originate from something you still have saved on your computer), but that doesn't do anything to get your credit card number out of someone else's computer.
