I am looking into making another e-bike for winter and as a backup for my main commuter road ebike. I was thinking about trying a kit from ampedbikes.com, and getting an xtracycle add on. I was wondering what mountain bike is best suited for this use(winter, and e-biking) I am shooting for cheap. I saw a full suspension bike at walmart(mongoose), but I think a hard tail would be more durable.

I like my cheap mongoose MTB's fine. Get em real cheap at garage sales and flea markets. Of course to be able to actually ride the thing I have upgraded, tire tubes, seat , seatpost, handlebars crank, peadles, and and brakes. Fortunately most of the parts came off of other junk bikes, bought even cheaper, like usually 10 bucks. For a hardtail bike, there are tons of dirt cheap but high quality frames out there in the junk bikes for sale. I could give you one, but you should be able to find one cheaper than shipping you one.

I agree totally with that. For a 3 or 4 mile ride, anything is fine. I do 29 miles daily and every time I improve the fit it is very much noticeable. The best mod for me so far was trading mtb handlebars for bmx ones. The straight bar puts my hands to sleep because of the position of the wrists. The bmx bars have a slight angle on em.

I found an old(late 90's?) trek 800 antelope in okay condition for 50$, I might turn that into my winter e-bike:)
