CAMPBELL (BCN) — A 19-year-old man was arrested in a suspected drunk driving collision that killed a bicyclist in Campbell on Sunday afternoon, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.
Damian Joseph Sandoval-Pacheco, of Campbell, was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter, CHP Officer Ross Lee said.
Sandoval-Pacheco was speeding in a 1997 Ford Mustang on northbound San Tomas Expressway north of Winchester Boulevard, where he lost control of the vehicle while traveling downhill, Lee said.
The vehicle struck a man, who was ejected from a Cannondale bicycle and landed on the right shoulder. The Ford veered to the left and crashed into a concrete center divider before it came to a stop on northbound lanes, according to Lee.
Sandoval-Pacheco was arrested at the scene and was booked into Santa Clara County Jail, Lee said.
The bicyclist, a 32-year-old San Jose man, was pronounced dead at the scene, Lee said. The Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office is not yet releasing his name until his next of kin is notified of the death.

The man struck by a train late Monday morning at Seventh and B streets died not long afterward at Doctors Medical Center, police confirmed Tuesday. The victim has been identified as Jose Patlan Jr., 33.
The conductor estimates the southbound train was traveling 40 mph on the Union Pacific tracks just east of Seventh Street, said Modesto police spokeswoman Heather Graves.
Some initial reports indicated Patlan, riding a bicycle, was trying to beat the train to the crossing. That doesn’t appear to be the case, Graves said. “He did purposely go around the crossing arms,” she said Tuesday. “He was doing some sort of pattern (with his bike), but they don’t believe he knew the train was that close or that he heard the train coming.”
As medical responders were giving Patlan CPR at the scene, there were headphones around his neck, Graves said, but no one has confirmed seeing the victim use them as he rode.
The train came to a stop on the bridge across the Tuolumne River, and Patlan’s twisted bike still was on the tracks after he was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
Patlan’s family created a gofundme page to help with funeral expenses.

A Sheffield cyclist was left cut and bruised after a gang of youths viciously attacked him on the commute home.
Brian Trevelyan, aged 54, was attacked by 15-20 youths on the cycle home to Norton Lees at around 5.30pm on Monday.
The health and Safety engineer at Hallam University was cycling along the Cutlers Way path, which runs from Argyle Road to Sheaf Bank.
As he approached the foot tunnel which runs under the railway near Dunnelm Mill, the cyclist heard ‘shouting and screaming’.
He said: “As I approached the tunnel, the other end was completely blocked by the gang.
“I asked them politely to move, but they forced me to stop.
“A bit further on, someone smacked me on the back, hard. Then someone kicked my bike and suddenly there were two of them stood directly in front of me, forcing me to stop again.
“I asked again, ‘can I come past?’ and they just screamed in my face. No words, just screaming, then one of them started kicking my bike really hard.”
At this point the youths started kicking the wheels in a bid to make them collapse, and Brian pleaded with them to stop.
Brian said: “The next thing I knew, one of the two lads punched me without warning, really hard below my right eye. He punched me so hard that he completely knocked me to the ground.
“They all then ran off to the other end of the tunnel. As I picked myself up I realised that they’d smashed my glasses.”
Brian managed to ride out of the tunnel at this point and contacted police.
He said: “I have experienced aggression from this particular gang, the ‘Top Corner Gang’, before. But never to this extent.
“I will never ride on this path ever again now – I’d rather chance the traffic on Chesterfield Road.”
Brian cuts and bruuises to his face and legs in the attack.
A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “At around 5.30pm on Monday, it is reported that a 54-year-old man was cycling along a footpath near Dunelm Mill, through the tunnel near to Guernsey Road.
“While riding, he was reportedly surrounded by a group of between 15 and 20 youths who are believed to have knocked the man off his bike, before assaulting him.
“The man suffered facial injuries and cuts to his knee.
“Did you see the group in the Guernsey Road area of Heeley that evening? Did you witness the assault?”

A cyclist suffered neck injuries in Hyde Park after riding into a rope apparently strung across a path by a group of hooded teenagers.
The woman said she saw the youths holding the cord across the path near to Speaker's Corner at about 10pm on Tuesday.
She felt something hit her neck, causing her to gasp for breath, and later noticed a rope burn injury on her neck.
She managed to maintain her balance, however.
Police have warned cyclists and pedestrians in Hyde Park to be on their guard in the wake of the incident.
Detective Constable Mick Heaney of Westminster CID said: "This is an extremely dangerous and foolish act that could cause serious injuries.
“We are not aware of any other incidents at this stage but would urge cyclists and pedestrians to exercise caution when in the area."
No arrests have been made and enquiries are continuing.
Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is asked to Call Westminster CID on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111

By Graham Womack
This article was published on 06.16.16.
This is an extended version of a story from the June 16, 2016, issue.

A little over two years ago, Hilary Abramson’s life changed forever. On May 21, 2014, days before her 69th birthday, the Midtown resident was walking on a 15th Street sidewalk when a bicyclist struck her and sent her flying. Hospitalized for two weeks with a shattered left femur, fractured pelvis and internal bleeding, she wound up with a steel plate in her left hip and a left leg that was a half-inch shorter than her right. Two years on, she still deals with chronic pain.

Months after the accident, Abramson embarked on a mission to ensure it didn’t happen to others, which led to her pushing the city to strengthen its longstanding ordinance against riding bicycles on sidewalks, which carries minimal fines and enforcement.
But in a city where not all bike lanes are created equal, some fear the stiffer fines could force cyclists to choose between breaking the law and putting themselves at risk.
“Safety against legality is a bad policy,” warned Jim Brown, executive director of Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates.
It’s taken two years of subcommittee meetings, public outreach and backlog at City Hall, but the updated ordinance is ready for the Sacramento City Council, with a draft released to the public June 10. Principal planner Fedolia Harris said he intends to present the ordinance to city council on June 21.
“I think it’s more clear,” Harris said of the ordinance. “I think it’s more enforceable. It will work better over time.”

One of several walking and biking-related policies that could come before city council this summer, the ordinance would allow fines in the ballpark of $250 for riding on the sidewalk. The current fine is $5.
The citywide ordinance would take effect 30 days after council approval. Many parts of Sacramento lack safe bike lanes, though Harris says he doesn’t intend to force cyclists to choose between safety and obeying the law. Instead, he will recommend the city manager have discretion in determining where to apply the ordinance.
That’s a relief for SABA’s Brown, but Abramson countered that cyclists have a choice to ride on the street or sidewalk. “Don’t you dare have the arrogance to endanger a pedestrian’s life,” she told SN&R.
The risk to pedestrians might be small. A 2014 study by three New York college professors published in the Journal of Safety Research found 2.24 pedestrian injuries were caused by cyclists per 100,000 people in California in 2011.

Which begs the question: Is the ordinance even needed?
Brown says the ordinance has been driven more by the $3.5 million claim Abramson filed against the city following her accident. “To be honest with you, I think the city’s wasting its time,” he said, adding that pedestrians get hit much more often by cars in crosswalks.
Abramson counters that the city denied her claim and that she lacked standing to file a lawsuit. She said she brought her claim “to change public policy” and that cities like Davis, Portland, San Diego and New York all have prohibitions against riding on the sidewalk. “If anything near what happened to me happens to someone else or worse, it’ll just kill my heart,” she said.

http://www.timesofmalta.com/article...ch-cyclist-insulted-for-using-the-road.615865 :x Happens all the time.
Were it not enough that cyclists in Malta have to use the road at their own peril, this video clip shows that they are also constantly taunted by impatient drivers.
Footage taken by Go-Pro camera attached to the cyclist's helmet and uploaded to YouTube shows a driver first hooting his horn as the cyclist rides through a narrow road, and once he gives way, the passenger sticks his finger out.
It is one of many obstacles cyclists in Malta have to face as they seek a healthier means of transportation through roads dominated by drivers who have no idea of cyclists' rights and where road rage is witnessed too often.
Increasingly, cyclists have been using a camera to record traffic breaches and uploading them to YouTube.

Police were searching for a hit-and-run driver Wednesday after a bicyclist was struck by two vehicles and killed in Beverly Grove.
The collisions were reported around 9 p.m. Tuesday in the 100 block of N. Crescent Heights Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Both the bicyclist, who was thrown about 75 feet due to the impact, and driver were headed west on the street.
Police said the hit-and-run driver, identified only as a woman, struck the bicyclist, a 58-year-old man, and fled before another driver struck the victim. The second driver stopped and will not face any charges, police said.
The hit-and-run driver struck another vehicle about a block away from the fatal crash, police said. Police said the driver abandoned a red Ford SUV after the second crash.
A detailed description of the driver was not immediately available.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) --
Two bicyclists have died tonight in separate hit-and-run incidents in San Francisco.
The most recent happened at 7th and Howard streets just before 8:30 p.m.
Police say the driver ran a red light and killed the bicyclist.
Two hours earlier, a woman on a bicycle was hit and killed in Golden Gate Park just before 6:30 p.m. on JFK at 30th Avenue. The driver of the car took off after it happened.
Police were on the scene for hours investigating where the woman was hit and in the nearby area where the driver's car was abandoned.
Paramedics worked frantically to save the woman's life as she lay in the road in Golden Gate Park, her twisted bicycle lay nearby.
"I look and see the woman cyclist who had just passed us on the road fly up and I saw her bike fly the opposite way," said Timmory Johnson, a witness.
Police say the driver abandoned the car, a white Honda Fit with dealer plates, about a quarter mile away.
A witness says he saw two men in the car. He says they were going 50 or 60 miles an hour and passing other cars.
"They clearly went into the opposite direction traffic and went far enough over to run right into that lady head on," said Joseph Cucia, a witness.
Police continue to search for the driver and the passenger. The car was not reported stolen.

Two bicyclists were killed just hours apart in separate hit-and-run crashes late Wednesday in San Francisco, police said.
The first involved a woman riding her bike in Golden Gate Park who was struck and killed by a car. The woman was riding near 30th Avenue and John F. Kennedy Drive at about 6 p.m. when a white Honda Fit struck her, according to the San Francisco Police Department.
Witnesses said the vehicle was traveling about 50-60 mph when it crossed over into oncoming traffic to pass another vehicle and hit the bicycle head-on.
"I heard an impact, and I look and see the woman who had just passed us fly up, and I saw the bike fly the other direction," said Timmory Johnson.
Witnesses said the driver slowed momentarily after the impact then took off in a hurry.
The woman, in her 20s, was not responsive at the scene, despite the efforts of emergency crews to revive her. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The vehicle, which had paper dealership plates, was found a few blocks away with a shattered windshield. Police said at least two people were in the vehicle, and they are searching for a second vehicle that may lead them to the person or persons responsible.
While investigators were still at the scene of the Golden Gate Park crash, a second fatal hit-and-run collision was reported in the SOMA district near the intersection of Seventh and Howard streets around 8:30 p.m.
In that incident, a driver allegedly ran a red light before striking a man on a bicycle and fleeing the scene. Officers were able to locate and apprehend the driver, police said.

Hit and run driving will not stop until we start treating leaving the scene as intent. No crash should be considered accidental if the driver leaves the scene. It should be automatically considered aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

An Oxnard teen was arrested Friday after a crash involving an SUV and a bicycle left one man dead on a neighborhood street just south of West Gonzales Road.
The 17-year-old was arrested on suspicion of fleeing the scene of an accident, Oxnard Police Department Senior Officer Jamie Brown said as he stood across the street from a mangled bicycle. Brown said the teen could face other charges.
Brown said the bicyclist was struck by the sport utility vehicle shortly after 7 a.m. near the intersection of Lakehurst Street and Janetwood Drive. He was taken to Ventura County Medical Center in Ventura, where he later died, authorities said.
Deputy Medical Examiner Bryce Elder identified the victim as Gregory Dominguez, 42, of Oxnard. Elder said an autopsy was performed on Dominguez and determined the cause of death was blunt-force trauma. The manner of death was an accident, Elder said.

After the crash with Dominguez, the SUV continued and knocked down numerous mailboxes along the right side of Lakehurst Street as it traveled south, police said. Before coming to a stop, it then veered to the opposite side of Lakehurst, knocking over a large magnolia tree, according to accounts of the incident.
The vehicle hit Dominguez with enough force that he was flung 15 to 20 feet in front of where his bicycle came to rest along the curb, police said. The bicycle's front wheel was sheared off, and its rider's hat was nearby, as was a blanket neighbors had placed on the man as they waited for an ambulance.

Kathleen Gransee and others who live in the area said the SUV's driver ran from the scene after the crash. Brown said the teen was taken into custody a short distance away.
The teen was taken to Ventura County Medical Center and later arrested, police said. Alcohol or drugs may have been factors in the crash, police said.
The SUV, which remained at the scene hours after the crash, is registered to a member of the teen's family, Brown said.

Accidents along that section of Lakehurst are sadly far too common, Gransee said.
"Cars come flying down this street all the time," she said as workers used a wood chipper to grind up the toppled tree.
"Had school been in session, this could have been much worse," Gransee's neighbor Traci McMurray said as she looked south toward Fremont Middle School.
"Kids use this street all the time to walk to and from school," McMurray said.
Fortunately, the school closed for summer vacation last week, the women said.
Both women said they've been telling city officials for years how dangerous the street is, to little avail.

Motorists often end up on Lakehurst by going south on Lantana Street and then taking a right on Lodgewood Way, which curves to the south and turns into Lakehurst, Gransee said.
"Once they're on Lakehurst, they really step on the gas pedal," said Gransee, who lives on the corner of Lakehurst and Janetwood Drive next to where the bicyclist was killed.
"We've asked for speed bumps, we've asked for stop signs — anything to get cars to slow down," she said. "We've gotten nothing from the city."
Gransee said she was especially upset after seeing speed bumps installed in another Oxnard neighborhood.
Joining Gransee as she spoke were other neighbors, including Jon Davis, who lives down Janetwood Drive.
Davis said his day began with a startle after he heard some loud noises.
He said: "I thought, 'What is going on?' "

Dick Maulhardt Jr., whose Lakehurst house is in front of where the bicyclist was killed, told a similar story.
"At first, I thought the noise had come from the backyard," he said. After finding nothing there, he said he looked out his front window, where he saw the damaged bicycle and the victim on the sidewalk.
Paramedics were called immediately, Maulhardt said, and performed CPR on the man. He said the man did not move while paramedics worked on him.
"I don't know if he'd already died or not," Maulhardt said.
Gransee and McMurray plan to continue the quest to get the city to slow traffic.
"It's tragic that this had to cost someone their life," Gransee said. "I'm hoping that now something might finally get done."

Palos Verdes Estates city officials respond to call from cyclists for steps to increase safety

Following a protest that drew about 40 cyclists, Palos Verdes Estates city officials responded to a group of bicycle riders calling for action from the city to improve cyclist safety at the City Council meeting Tuesday.
City Engineer Ken Rukavina told the group that the city already is taking some steps to improve the safety of bicyclists in Palos Verdes Estates. City staff will bring proposals to the Traffic Safety Committee next week to add new signs along city streets to encourage drivers to share the road and inform motorists of existing laws that require them to give bike riders three feet of space when they pass on the road.
Rukavina also said staff will begin working on a more comprehensive plan to address cycling safety later this year.
During the public comment section of the meeting, cyclists from the protest earlier Tuesday afternoon called for increased education about cycling safety and safe driving practices for motorists.

BALDWIN PARK >> A man died after being struck by car while riding his bike along Baldwin Park Boulevard late Thursday, authorities said.

The collision was first reported just before 9:25 p.m. at Baldwin Park Boulevard and La Rica Avenue, Los Angeles County Fire Department Dispatch Supervisor Kyle Sanford said.

Paramedics pronounced the cyclist dead at the scene, he said.

The bicyclist was believed to be a 30-year-old Baldwin Park man, Baldwin Park police Lt. Mark Adams said. His name was not available pending positive identification and notification of family.

He was crossing Baldwin Park Boulevard in an unknown direction when he collided with a northbound BMW sedan, the lieutenant said.

Officials initially summoned a helicopter to rush the man to a hospital, but cancelled the airship once it became clear he didn’t make it, Sanford said.

The 19-year-old man at the wheel of the BMW remained at the scene and cooperated with police, Adams said. There were no overt signs of DUI, and no arrests or citations were initially made.

Traffic flows unimpeded north and south along Baldwin Park Boulevard at the intersection, while eastbound and westbound traffic on La Rica Avenue is regulated by stop signs.

Police traffic investigators continued working to recreate the collision scene into the early morning hours Friday.

Anyone with information can reach the Baldwin Park Police Department at 626-960-1955.

A 35-year-old cyclist was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver in Williamsburg early Saturday morning—and investigators now believe that the driver intentionally struck the cyclist.
Law enforcement sources tell PIX11 that the driver of a black Chevy Camaro intentionally crashed into Matthew Von Ohen around 2:20 a.m. Saturday as he was headed east on Grand Street near Graham Avenue in the bike lane.
They report, "Investigators believe the driver pulled alongside Von Ohen, slowed down and moved the car partially into the bike lane, where the victim was riding...The driver then hit Von Ohen's rear tire and as the victim fell off his bike, the driver slammed into him again, running over him and dragging him about 20 to 30 feet."
Von Ohlen had been headed home from a shift as a bartender at Apotheke in Manhattan when he was struck. The Post has graphic surveillance footage of the collision, which you can see below.
Von Ohlen suffered severe trauma to his body and was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. “He was killed like a dog in the street,” neighbor Joanne Bascetta, who left flowers at the site where he was struck, told the Daily News. "He’s someone’s child. It’s heartbreaking. I just came out for support. I feel so bad for the family."
Von Ohlen started Bikestock, which operates self-serve bike repair vending machines in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Massachusetts, with partner Joseph Huba in 2013. According to his bio on the company's website, he "lives and breathes cycling" and "sees biking as a way to stay fit and to decrease his environmental impact, and is a strong advocate of year-round ridership."
Cops are looking for the driver of the vehicle now. They describe the car as a black 2014-2015 Chevy Camaro with gold New York State license plates. You can see surveillance images of the car, which were taken immediately prior to the incident, to the right.
Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS or for Spanish 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto theCrime Stoppers website or texting their tips to 274637(CRIMES) then entering TIP577.

Police were out on Grand Street after the incident—not stopping and ticketing drivers who were in the bike lane, but rather "catching cyclists running red lights and handing out tickets,"according to PIX11.
"When they got to the intersection of Grand and Graham on their way, police officers were there to stop them and hand out pamphlets on cyclist safety," Greg Fertel, who lives in the neighborhood, told us. "I found this to be pretty enraging—I don't think that this was an issue of cyclist safety." You can see the brochure below.

BELL GARDENS — A man was shot to death while riding a bicycle along the Los Angeles River bicycle path in Bell Gardens, authorities said today.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, she said.
The suspect was described as a man wearing dark clothing who ran to a vehicle on the Long Beach Freeway and rode off southbound and out of view, Hernandez said.
“The incident appears to be gang-related,” she said.

Police officer apologizes for cyclist collision comments
Safety advocates argue the remarks point to 'pattern' of victim blaming.
By LUKE SIMCOE METRO
Wed., July 6, 2016
A Toronto police spokesman has apologized after comments he made regarding a fatal cyclist crash were labelled “victim blaming” by safety advocates.
Const. Clinton Stibbe told Metro and other media outlets the cyclist was travelling at a high speed and did not “approach the area with enough care.”
But under Ontario law, the victim — riding in the right-hand lane next to parked cars — had the right of way, a fact Stibbe later acknowledged in a mea culpa on Twitter.
“I was wrong. Cyclist had right of way, didn’t have to stop for car. Other factors contributed to crash,” he tweeted Wednesday morning.
Some members of the city’s cycling community thanked Stibbe for setting the record straight, while others took to social media to admonish him for, among other things giving fuel to “the bike haters.”
Stibbe did not respond to requests for comments Wednesday afternoon.
Although he was glad to see Stibbe admit fault, lawyer and Bike Law Canada founder Patrick Brown said the officer’s comments were unacceptable.
“It sends the wrong message to the driving public,” he said. “It’s that old Rob Ford culture of saying ‘if you swim with sharks you’re going to get bit.’ It suggests cyclists are the victims of their own misfortune.”

A cyclist who swerved into a parked van to avoid a turning car had the right of way moments before the deadly collision, Toronto police say.
The cyclist, 71, died in hospital on Tuesday afternoon, shortly after the crash near a Dupont Street car dealership, just west of Christie Street.
Police are still investigating, but say it appears that around 12:50 p.m. westbound traffic had stopped to allow an eastbound car to turn left into a parking lot on Dupont. The cyclist, who was also heading west, was passing the stopped cars on the right.
The cyclist dodged the turning vehicle — which braked at the last minute to avoid hitting the man — before slamming into a black minivan parked on the north side of the street.
Const. Clint Stibbe, of Toronto police's traffic services division, said at the scene that the collision appeared to be caused by "cyclist error," but said on Wednesday morning that his comment was a mistake.
"We're still looking at the chain of events," Stibbe told CBC News.
"We have to look at the actions of all road users."
Stibbe said it could be weeks before reconstruction teams figure out what errors led to the crash. He said it's far too early to comment on any potential charges.
The cyclist, who was wearing a helmet at the time, suffered grave injuries after colliding with the van. He was rushed to hospital, but died there. He has not been identified at this time.

Was speed a factor?
Stibbe said the severity of the cyclist's injuries may be due to speed.
Police say surveillance video captured by the car dealership appears to show the cyclist travelling nearly 30 km/h at the time of the crash.
Stibbe said he hasn't seen the video, so can't comment on how much of the incident was recorded.
Any questions about road design in the area, he said, should go to the city.
"At any time everyone has to be aware of their own safety," Stibbe said, adding drivers have to exercise extra caution while turning across traffic.
Police are still seeking any witnesses who may have seen the collision.

A woman died early Saturday morning in a hit-and-run traffic collision near the 400 block of East Market Street, officials said. She was struck by a carjacked vehicle while riding a bicycle.
Police officers responded to the collision between a vehicle and a bicyclist at about 1:20 a.m. on July 9, a release from the Long Beach Police Department said.
Upon arrival, officers found a bicycle with major damage and a woman lying unconscious on the eastbound lanes of Market Street. Long Beach paramedics responded and took her to a local hospital, where she was pronounce dead.

Preliminary investigations determined the woman was biking eastbound on Market Street in the center median with a man, who was her friend. However, he was riding on the north side of the street.
The woman was struck in the rear by a speeding, white 2013 Kia Optima — illegally passing another car on the left by traveling in the center median. The Kia didn’t stop and was last seen speeding eastbound on Market Street. The vehicle reportedly had four occupants.

The Kia later was found abandoned in a parking lot in the 5300 block of Atlantic Avenue, with major front-end damage and a smashed windshield. The Kia reportedly was a stolen vehicle, taken on July 8 near Pacific Coast Highway and Pine Avenue.
Anyone with information regarding this incident can call Long Beach collision investigations detective Brian Watt at (562) 570-5520. Anonymous tips may be submitted by calling (800) 222-TIPS (8477), texting TIPLA plus tip to CRIMES (274637) or by visiting www.lacrimestoppers.org.

Truckee police are investigating the possibility that the death of a woman early Tuesday morning was related to a Monday night bicycle collision.
Police went to a home off Meadow Way about 5:14 a.m. regarding a 57-year-old woman who was thought to have died in her sleep. Zoe King of Truckee was pronounced dead at the home and, after a preliminary investigation, it was discovered that King had been involved the night before in an unreported bicycle collision on High Street, according to a Police Department news release. The collision, which occurred between about 10 and 10:30 pm., also involved King’s boyfriend, Jeremy Allen, police said. An unidentified motorist reportedly gave King and Allen a ride home following the collision.
The good Samaritans were described as a male and female in a dark-colored vehicle, possibly a van. As part of their investigation, police would like to identify the driver of the van and any other people who might have witnessed the collision or have related information.
Police said no foul play is suspected at this time and a thorough investigation is standard in such situations.
Anyone with information pertaining to the case is asked to call Sgt. Robert Womack at 530-550-2335, or email rwomack@townoftruckee.com.

Bicyclist hit, killed on Highway 227 in Edna Valley
By Matt Van Slyke
A woman was hit by a car and killed Thursday evening while riding her bike in San Luis Obispo County's Edna Valley, according to CHP.
The collision on Highway 227 near Biddle Ranch Rd. sent paramedics racing to the scene around 6:45 p.m.
The California Highway Patrol says the driver involved, a 53-year-old woman from Oceano, was driving northbound on 227 south of Biddle Ranch as the bicyclist, a 58-year-old woman from San Luis Obispo, was riding northbound on the right shoulder.
The driver, for reasons still unknown, drifted onto the shoulder and hit the woman on the bike, according to investigators.
The bicyclist landed in a ditch, suffering several broken bones and other injuries. She was pronounced dead at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center less than an hour later.
CHP says investigators do not believe the driver was intoxicated at the time.
