BMS Battery Alloy Shell Charger Problems

does the charger have a 115/230 selector switch? was your battery plugged in at the time?

i don't see what you were worried about in the picture. i can see the ground but do not see how the neutral is tied to it.
 
The charger doesn't have a 110/230V switch on it, it's marked on the top of the case that it's for 230V though. The photo doesn't illustrate my concern very well. I think I'm being daft anyway, the live goes through a fuse then onto the PCB onto the "IN" point but it's a seperate solder point than the neutral, just both labelled IN
 
maybe go look and see if the IN is really LN for line.

i assume since you got the 230 model you used it on 230V, but you don't see any burn marks on the sides where the transistors are snugged up under the bar? nothing blown up?
 
No burn marks on the transistors, there are two inputs on the PCB titles "IN" separate solder points but both in a box called IN.

I am using it on 230V, tried a different power lead to rule out that as the problem. Hmmmmm what now?
 
Time to get the multimeter out unfortunately. Check the transistors for shorts, but if this is brand new, you should hit up the vendor. This isn't right...

I have alsmost the same charger.
I have bought from Greenbikekit.
Took out the package and want to test it.
My charger is acting very strange, when you push the switch to OFF the red light will go on (very dim).
When you switch it on the red light will going off.

The second charger (same charger) is good, when you turn on.
Red and green light will go on.
Output is 58,4V (with no battery hook).

Hopefully Greenbikekit will solve y problem :D
 
I think my new purchased charger has been repaired.

nope, that is how it is made. you can add some more solder to the through holes if you want. this is a thread from people with problems, if you wanna create a thread to work up the courage to make them take it back that is ok, but you haven't any problems like everybody else. you can send the picture to BMS battery if you want to, but your warranty is now void since you opened the case. if you don't remount the switching transistors and the diode on their insulators properly it will blow up.
 
did you check the fuse on the output? did you plug in the output reversed to the pack and get a big bang?

you coulda checked the voltage on that big trace running from the diode without removing the pcb. you can check continuity across the choke since the soldering appears perfunctory. check from the trace to the positive side of the output caps.
 
does the green led turn on when you connect the battery pack? the dim red led is when there is power to the front end. when you flip the switch on the front, the red led will increase and the green will start blinking red. but you can check continuity across the choke since it does appear to be a poor soldering job. it carries all the current through that connection.
 
I will check the fuse tomorrow (charger is in the shed :D )
No big bang when connecting the battery.

What are the proper way to connect and disconnect battery?

Also no green light when connecting battery.

I will check the volatges as you suggested.

ok, i finally went and checked. shoulda done that first before yakking away.

the green led is lit when there is power switched on, and turns off when the power is switched off. the dim red led is the one that is on when the battery is connected.

if there is no green led when you switch the power on, then check the fuse in the input, under where the power cord plugs in. there is another fuse in the output to protect against reversing the output. if the dim red led is lit then that fuse is intact, so it may be the fuse on the input power. that little black piece under the plug slides out, it covers the fuse. you can hook it on that little lip with screwdriver.

but put solder on the the through holes where the choke leads come out before reassembling it. that is where they came apart from overheating and i bet the reason is that they use so little solder in the through hole. i had never seen one before the choke overheated.
 
Here is my update.

All fuses are good.

1.When AC cord is connected the red led will lit up (very dim).

2.When you press the switch to ON the red led will dim.

3.When you connect the battery the red led will lit (a little brighter).
But the green is still off and charger doesn't do anything.

Also there is now DC output of 4 V with no battery connected.

And what do you mean by choke?
 
So I may as well chip in my experiences. I got a 900W charger from BMSBattery, it went pop on plug in first time just like a lot of you folks. Opened it up, no apparent damage, no idea what was up. Talked with BMSBattery, they shipped me a replacement, so they handled it pretty well but really, they could just send better chargers in the first place :? So I've been running my replacement for about two months now but at only 6amps (58.2v) rather than the 15 they say. It's always made a nice shrill screech but charged just fine. Until today, it hasn't overtly blown on me, but it refuses to charge any faster (or slower) than 1amp, despite fiddling with the pots. I don't whats up with that, but based on the horror stories here I'm going to start looking for a replacement anyway. Do you guys know if the ping chargers and/or the cellman chargers are the same manufacturer as these hunks of junks or are they more reliable?

Anyway when I get around to trying to fix it I'll check in again and hopefully provide some useful info, but at least I hope that I'll be yet another voice saying avoid these chargers unless you want a headache!
 
Funny you ask, i talked to cell_man about those chargers the other day and he said that he orders his from a different company, and hasn't had a lot of problems with the ones he is currently selling.

Apparently these 'alloy shell' cases can contain boards from different manufacturers. Sorta like meanwells VS knockoff meanwells.
 
can you open your chargers and look inside? the pop may be the input switching transistors. i bot some on ebay. the other one may be adjustable to get more current. i bet we can get them both working.

these chargers are not the same as the kingpan chargers. they are built the same way, but different pcbs and parts even though they are the same parts if you know what i mean. chinese copy each other's stuff all the time. i am thinking the choke may be a common problem too.
 
I received a package from BMS Battery today ..10 chargers. Ordered a selection of 240W, 400W and 600W for 12, 20 and 24S LiPo, and a couple for SLA.
First one I tested was a 400W, 83V @ 3A model. Plugged the 3-prong into the wall and switched it ON. One red and one green light lit up. Good, right?
Plugged the *counterfeit* Anderson plug (color to color) into my 20S 2P Turnigy pack and -POP! Saw a flash and a puff of smoke from the charger :shock:
WTF?! NOT good..

..Pulled the shrink wrap back from the connector.. what did I find? Reversed polarity :!:

Huh.

So I begin testing them, and a pattern begins to form.
EVERY ONE OF THESE CHARGERS IS WIRED IN REVERSE POLARITY :evil:

Printed right there on the case ->
Brown wire:DC(+)
Blue wire:DC(-)

Why do ALL of these chargers have brown wires installed in *counterfeit* black Anderson connectors? Lame.

Time to break out the Turd Polish :roll:

Just finished a chat session with someone at BMS Battery, suggested that they check if the probes were reversed on their test equipment :lol:

Received an apology, told that it was a mistake, asked to 'please switch the wires'.
Was offered a replacement charger on my next order. Better than a kick in the teeth I guess :roll:
