Brooks Saddles Flyer Bicycle Saddle

I used to think no way I'd pay over $100 on bike saddle. After breaking two $30 saddles that were never comfortable in the 1st place, I finally tried a Brooks Brooks B66. There's a HUge difference and improvement in comfort.

As another data point, just look what used Brooks saddles sell for on eBay. Pay for quality and it will return most if not all the cost when you no longer need it.

Hey If that saddle was owned by a hot chick and you are into . That's why I got into ebiking. All the hot babes.

but I digress

Brooks conform to your body shape over time. It takes a while for them to stretch and mold to your shape, but after that, nothing is as comfortable.
A used brooks is going to be in the shape of someone else's crotch. I really hope she was hot. my fear is "she" was named Bubba, weighed 400lbs, and ate chilli and beans at every meal.

Wow, you know your taking too long to reply when 6 other posts appear lol
And back with the program:

I have read on a number of sites that comfort comes from springs. Most were offering rails made from exotic flexible materials, costing enough to make any plastic bounce lol

I think taking the springs off is a great upgrade for a racer saddle. It's lighter and more aerodynamic, while becoming easier to make. Then you can spend time making them from flexible materials and covering them with something different each year.

A lot of us don't want a saddle. We want a seat. Like a motorcycle. This is when seats with springs start to make sense. Mine's coils springs, and there is no way I'm getting off it to pedal. Unless I'm bumping up or down a curb, or in the process of falling off, I'm seated. I have no suspension except the seat and my 30psi 2.15" tyres on suitably wide rims. I have never stood up because of a bad surface. I find myself slowing down because the bike is rattling to bits and the handlebars are bouncing about, but my weight stays mostly on the seat.

Leather has a nice wicking action and this taught unsupported span will take on your shape over time. So comfort improves. As if becoming tailor made.

I have just about settled on buying a velo branded one from ebay. There the brooks is about 100 sheets and the velo 60. My Ventura gel seat was just 10, but it's ok. My cycle hobby is one I expect to pay for it's self in fuel savings. Then it gets treated lol Couple more weeks now :)

I have a brooks flyer and a thudbuster lt on a rigid mountain bike. yes, totally worth it. They each add some smoothness to your ride and they're not really consumable parts that wear out quickly and need to be replaced. You will have them for a long time. But with medium sized and big potholes it still helps to stand on the pedals and get off of the seat.

I purchased a Brooks Saddles Imperial B17 from Amazon on 2/14/2011 from Amazon for $137.85 USD. It has been my best investment as far as saddles go - and I have tried quite a few.

For cross country - it's all about the saddle that hurts the least cos after 50 miles - they all hurt

I wrote up a really nice little review of saddles for ElectricBikes here.

We are all human and unique. The fantastic thing about that is there's a saddle made for just about everyone out there for whatever type of riding there is.

Good hunting! KF

Dude, who wants to ride somebody else's used bike seat? Urgh, disgusting.

Thanks for your concern but nasty deplorable condition need not apply. If buying eBay - gently used, like new condition is and has been my personal criteria.

However, my point to OP is what you pay now for a quality saddle that feels better than anything I've tried can mostly be recouped if they ever wished to resell.

Try doing that with some Cloud 9 plastic POS....

Best saddle I ever rode was a brooks. But that was in the day when I pedaled so hard I didn't know what low gears were. Took a full year to break one in. It chafed less than any modern, non racing type saddle I have now. Ride 50 miles in one day, then decide if you like your saddle. 20-30 miles isn't enough to know.

Now, I don't break pedals off cranks anymore and I sit on the saddle more. I look for some cushion, and a vent notch down the center. I like it on the wide side compared to a racing saddle, but not a fat wide seat. Too wide chafes like hell. If it has springs, I like the kind you see in that pic of the brooks above. Lots of saddles have springs, but it takes a 300 pound rider to get some spring out of them. The purpose of the springs is not so much to absorb big bumps, as it is to lessen some of that road vibration. That vibration tends to numb the butt faster IMO. Doesn't matter much till about mile 40 though.

Oh, and for those that don't know, those leather saddles have a screw in the nose that makes them adjustable. Don't get that with a chunk of plastic. If you don't tune it and break it in, your leather saddle could easily be the worst saddle you ever owned.

I ride to work and home 5 or 6 days a week 7 miles round trip. If I got a Brooks it wouldn't even be a status symbol because who can recognize a Brooks saddle except ES guys.

Has anyone tried sprung leather saddles that are a bit cheaper?
$65+p&p gyes http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gyes-Leather-Bicycle-Saddle-Honey-Stitch-Spring-560-026-/370430210236?pt=US_Saddles_Seats&hash=item563f5c70bc
Velo are competitively priced, but not a lot cheaper
Any others to look at?

cyclists will recognize the brooks, then lament at you puting a beautiful saddle on that abomination. (im not calling your ebike an abomination, just saying that cyclists tend to be elitist snobs)
