I recently picked up an old electric bike for $10 NZD. I think it may be a Strong GT-S series. The bike had been powered with 3 SLAs in series and it had a brake lever connected to some sort of mechanical regulator for an on-off switch (no variable speed). You can see the plate with the regulator on it welded on to the frame. The bike had fallen over over in the shed and turned on, almost causing a fire before it was found and partially burning out the motor. Apparently it was usually run at 40A but I tested it on my 36V battery and it took over 30A no load.

I bought the bike as I thought it was probably an old brushed direct drive hub motor I could rewind. I was very surprised to find it was a geared air core axial flux motor. I thought I'd read here on ES that no hub motor like this existed - has anyone seen one of these before? I don't think I'll be able to rewind it easily. The armature doesn't have any frame, the copper is simply covered in epoxy(?) and some type of paper. The burnt phase wires lifted up the paper slightly which started scraping the magnets. As you can see all the magnet dust is sitting in the gaps between the magnets. The motor had a rubber "cush drive" part on the armature axle where it connected to the gears.

Interesting find. Never seen anything like it.

The only other axial flux bicycle hub motor, I know of, is the Avanti: https://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=68857

I thought the innards looked vaguely familiar.
