Caleb Moore dies after injuries in X Games crash

Smashed like a bug at age 25 while fooling around.

In the end, I wonder whether he still thought it was worth it. Sure doesn't look like it to me. But then, I have made it a few more years down the way than he did.

i can't watch. i cannot even watch tv because it is all guns and killing.

it is sad, you also gotta feel for the tens of thousand of other young guys out to prove themselves who now are paralyzed or in a coma from trying to out do each other in trying to match these over the top ESPN exploitation videos. a lifetime of pain from a completely crushed elbow, wrist, or knee.

maybe ESPN will set up a fund to help care for all the kids who end up on ventilators with their mothers constantly tied to wiping the drool off their chins. some lawyer may sue them like they are doing now for the kids who go on shooting sprees after getting jammed outa their war games video gaming stuff. like adam lanza.

it never seemed to be so insane when i was a kid like that. maybe it is just their is more horsepower and devices available to do this stuff, but then you got tens of thousands of kids getting killed and paralyzed every year in gang turf warfare. opposite ends of the social strata.

Motor play is an addiction every bit as compelling and dangerous as the most pernicious drugs, but with much worse collateral damage to non-abusers. These young so-called "sportsmen" are analogous to teens who discover methamphetamine and decide it is the thing that matters most to them. But few people around them are willing to intervene to the degree they would if it were meth.

Because in America, almost everyone has some degree of motor addiction, and they are in denial about how destructive it is.

Wow,
Chalo, how do you define collateral damage?
It's a total shame the guy died as a result of the injuries.....maybe the sanctioning body will step up the safety standards regarding concusion & cumlitive damage assessment........like the other blood sports & racing orginazations.

I agree that calling this "sport" is borderline....but just as legit as gymnastics or figure skating.
I love the competition of racing, but I realized there was a goofy mental aspect to it during the recovery of my elbow reconstruction. I always thought I would walk away if I was ever really hurt......but at 2:00am watching RC sweep another AMA national on the boobtube....(with a butt load of opiates controlling the pain from all my new titanium parts) I was swept with the urge to ride I hadn't had since I was a boy....definitely some addiction in play.

What I am confused about is the "interven" statement. I would bet he had support from friends & family. He was living on his owne terms. Frankly, I respect that.....far more than someone going thru the motions of life & totally dissatisfied with the experience.

There are some who are satisfied with the 9-5 routine & that is fine too. This wasn't one of thouse guys.

I am returning to the track this year on my vintage Honda's.....my name is Thud, & I am an addict.

Right on Thud!

It's not tragic to be injured doing what you love. We all know the risks and consequences. The scars on my shins are perpetual.

It's very sad he didn't make it, but for every death in extreme sports there are 1,000 of dying in all sorts of meaningless ways. Overindulgence, laziness, negligence..

I'm not a fan of snowmobiles at all, but don't fault him for going for it. We all can't be Elvis impersonators....

It's pretty sad that this small error cost him his life.

Agreed.

In regard to meaningless ways of dying: Can one die meaninglessly by criticizing other people's way of lives? How about self agrandizement? :D

You have a very suspicious mind. There are no Elvis impersonators where Chalo is from, you know - the ghetto.

Already have coat-in-hand...

First of all, our prayers go up for his friends and family. Sports have become mega entertainment. Money is huge, just look at what TV coverage of the Super Bowl, X games, pro surfing, cycling, and MMA has become. Sponsors increase sales
Athletes take risks, they know what that entails. I''ll die in blessed obscurity, hoping only to hear my Lord say " Well done, thou good and faithful servant; enter into My presence forevermore". Many extreme sports pros are believers, I hope he was also.

I had to watch the video several times to see the impact. It looked like it just bounced right over him. But there was one angle in which you see the snow mobile smash his chest. I wonder if those guys wear any significant body armor (if it would even help).

I grew up surfing, and always knew that I might not come back in. You're in a pool that's extremely deep and going underwater on purpose. But it was always worth it.

Nothing wrong with what he was doing. He hurt nobody but himself.

Besides, when I was growing up Evol Knievel was all the rage. I had the doll, the wind-up toy motorcycle, and watched every special he had.

If I go out doing the thing I loved most, don't cry for me.

Chalo,

I don't even know what to say....... :?:  :(
If your perfect nanny state ever comes around, I'll probably commit suicide and go out with a big bang....something really fun to watch. I'll have to make sure you get a copy. Maybe if you had a stroke while sitting in your lazy boy, being perfectly safe, you'd realize how little time we actually have here and have a little more respect for those that make the most of it.
The world isn't a safe place and as long as it is interesting, it never will be.
Is there an ignore function on this board? Most of your posts really bring me down.

Just in case spirits have web access:
RIP Caleb! With the way this world is circling the toilet bowl due to busy body idiots like Chalo, I hope I join you in extreme sports heaven sooner rather than later.

Hurtling machinery can sometimes result in severe consequences. This young man paid the ultimate price and I grieve for friends & family. But, he left this world doing what he loved to do and that's more than majority in daily obituaries can claim.

RIP

I wouldn't say Chalo is an idiot. He just has an opinion that is different than others and the same as some.

He (Caleb Moore) took a lot more risks driving TO the mountain each day than he did ON the mountain.

I'd say we have a much bigger problem than extreme sports. I'd say it's cowards who attack innocent people with guns, knives, etc.

Take this guy a few hours down the road from me in Alabama. He torments his neighbors for five years, shoots at one, gets arrested, and to avoid his court date kills a bus driver and kidnaps a five-year-old as a hostage so he can hide in his stupid paranoid parlor (underground shelter). Makes me want to drive down there and try myself to get the kid out (obviously the cops would kick me arse if I tried). But you get the idea.

It's cowards like that guy we need to concentrate on, not people who race machines.

Maybe not an idiot.....maybe a shortsighted, closed minded, brainwashed, consumer, worker drone, socialist???

Oh come on guys, I might disagree with chalo just as many times as I agree with him. But I wouldn't want him to stop posting even if it was all disagree because we all have such a wide range of opinions here and that's why it works.

Agenda or no.

Motor-addicted people who play their games on the street kill and injure far more of us every year than homicidal crackpots, because they are so much more numerous. I suggest that the much bigger problem is the one we should concentrate on.

But we won't, because all our decision makers are also motor addicts.

Motor addicts?

Good luck preaching that one. How far does a Nissan Leaf go on a single charge?

But, then, the Leaf has a motor too. It runs on coal.

Electric motors are motors too. The sickness of motor addiction is heavy even in this forum.

But a motor can be benign. It just has to be quiet, clean, efficient, and most of all SLOW. Therefore safe, considerate, and suitable for the human environment. Quite unlike cars or recreational ballistic missiles such as the one that squashed young Mr. Moore.
