Can SLA batteries be mounted on an angle

I'm new to the e bike scene and bought a front wheel hub drive kit including the sealed lead acid batteries and at the moment they are mounted on a carrier at the rear of my giant ds2 bike, as these weigh about 13 kilograms I'm considering mounting them under the frame but they would be on an angle of about 35 degree's, while these still have life in them other than going to lithium.
Will this angle damage the batteries?
Mark.

If each cell chamber is properly sealed, it should be able to run in any position equally well. Which is to say poorly in the case of SLA.

Thank's for the advise, I suppose you're saying try it,if it doesn't work then the answer is no, now I'm thinking just leave it for now and do something different when the batteries have expired, Cheer's Mark.

Actually, he's saying that they will run fine in whatever position or angle you put them in, but that SLA in general don't make great ebike batteries (which is true, but they are what I have used for CB2 successfully, because I had them).

I don't recommend charging them upside down, though. Other than that, it shouldn't matter.

Thank's again, the batteries are pretty new but only 300 cycles so might leave it for now or if I get a burst of motivation, but it makes the bike fairly top heavy where they are or find a bike with a bigger triangle

Hey BabylessinOZ... just fyi many stand-up scooter designs regularly mount SLAs on their sides under the deck. Also, 300 cycles is NOT "new" for SLAs! If routinely discharged to 80% DOD (20% remaining) 300 cycles is often considered end of life! If only 50% usually, maybe 600 cycles is possible. I almost always ran SLAs down to 20% EVery discharge and usually 2-4 discharges a day so I never got more than a years worth of use out of a pack.

True am babyless but not looking, chicks can be a pain anyway but many thanks and love the e bikes want to turn mine into a off road hill climber one day and can handle fast downhill

Not all SLA's are created equally and the true answer to your question lies with the manufacturer. I am currently on SLA's myself. From Tempest. They are ok on any side except upside down. Which of course would take the same exact space as right side up! But the manufacturer should have the details in a spec sheet, I suggest finding our for YOUR SPECIFIC battery, and going from there. Giant.jpgThank's for advice, I've decided mounting them on top of the the frame in a small V rather than underneath or find another bike with a rigid rear that has a bigger triangle but this one is so comfortable

Watt size (Ah ratings) are these slas??? Just thinking that on top of the frame they might project out sideways enough to interfere w/pedaling? I mighta thought beefing up the back rack the way to go...

They are only 12 ah and measure 10cm h x 10cm w x 15cm long or 4" x 4" x 6' x 3 of and weigh 4.2 kilo's each, you do get used to the weight at back, I tend to lean forward more but it may not be worth the effort if LiFePo4 become more affordable

How about a box on either side of the frame, just behind the headset:

That takes two, then a third can go where you already were thinking, but if it will fit I'd put it in the triangle.

Good idea amberwolf, thanks for the input, my concern is though it will make the front too heavy as it is front drive hub and and the gear and brake cables run down the other side of the frame tube, but if I later go for rear wheel hub or other, but who knows may just sit and dwell upon it untill a later date cause it does work ok at the moment with the rear battery mount, Cheer's Mark.

Actually upon reconsideration your suggestion is a very good one amberwolf only mounted lower and further back and ive found some 5kg plastic screw/nail box's which would make pretty good battery box's, and no they will not fit in that triangle
