hi

electric arc welders are only £40 on ebay! would it be possible if you turnned the power right down, to arc weld tabs on to a battery without destroying it?

I really don't know about welding batteries. People say its not easy. my guess is that they do it with one of those spot welders. They are specialized machines for welding thin things together. The don't weld as well as mig or tig, but they are quick and concentrated and work fine for thin things. Arc welding is dangerous to begin with and learning on something full of lithium is really not a good idea.
although lifepos are considered safer the lithium can still ignite.
I can tell you about cheap welders. I weld and my dad bought a cheap flux core mig welder from harbor freight. Welding is not easy to begin with, and with a bad machine its a helluvalot harder. I couldn't weld dafhksdjh together with it. Save your money.

If you wanna learn to weld take a course on it at a community college. The price of the course is a better way to spend your money. You will get access to good equipment and they'll even show you how to use it.

Ever seen an arc welding in action? Once the arc jumps onto the grounded plate, you don't have much control left on it and in a few miliseconds, the surface will be blazed, and the electrode is introduced to this hot spot, instantly melting it onto the surface, creating atomic level bonds.
Using an arc welder, you would have no control of the temperature, and it would probly boil battery in a few miliseconds.
Spot welding, works, because there is much less energy flowing through the electrodes, in a much smaller area, and by applying pressure onto the spot welding tab, you reduce the amount of energy needed to form bonds by placing the parts that are being welded together, in the end, you get the same welding action, but before the battery plate can even heat up, the process is done.
just my two kuruÅŸ.

Do post a video of it though?

Just whip urself up one of these babys from an old microwave. http://www.instructables.com/id/Homemade-Spot-Welder/?ALLSTEPS (please don't[or if you do post videos{and don't sue me}])
