Clyte 408 maintenance issues over time?

Guys,

I am up to well over 6,000 miles on my 408 front hub in 19 months. I am not noticing any changes in noise or performance. All in all I'm thrilled with the motor.

Question is once I get up to this many miles on the motor is there anything I should consider regarding maintenance? The only thing I can think of may be replacing the bearings. Everything else seems bulletproof.

Any experience with this out there. Thanks.

regards,
Bill

Nice! I would think bearings would be just about the only thing that could need maintenance, provided the motor is run cool. A cooked enough motor could need anything from halls or phase wires replaced, or magnets reglued.

You've got me beat on mileage on a Ping v1 battery too. Good on ya! I can only estimate cycles, but I'm just under 6000 miles on my 36v Ping v1, bought in April 2 years ago.

I've only got the motor case too hot to touch once. That involved a climb up Mt wachusett in central Massachusetts. It was a 1500 foot climb including two miles at 10-12% grade. Heavy pedalling and drawing about 20 amps the whole way. Very hot at summit.

Just did a 2,200 foot climb up the Kancamaugus pass in New Hampshire. That included 5 miles at 7% grade. Motor fairly warm but never got hot.

Bearings seem good and no new or unusual noises from the motor. Astoundingly reliable transportation so far. Still getting 900 watt hours plus out of the Ping with no LVC or other noticeable loss of capacity.

Take care,
Bill

My wife's bike with Crystalite brushed and a 3 year old Ping is still going. I guesstimate 3000 miles with no problems.

That seems pretty good total miles for a brushed motor. As I understand it the brushes have a service life of about 2,500-3,000 miles.

I also have about 6000 miles also on a 408. No problems.

Wait...... 6350 miles on 415 cycles with 48v-20ah? Thats only 15 miles a cycle. If I had that much battery, I'd be able to do at least 50 miles a cycle. You must be going straight uphill at full throttle all the time. :)

Not quite :) 80% of my rides are a 25 mile round trip commute into work. I average about 250-300 watts out of the battery at my usual 18-20 mph with pedaling. I recharge after each one way so my cycles are very shallow for the most part. Keeps the battery very well balanced and happy. I go over 800 wh out of the pack maybe only once a month or so.

I used to know where to get replacement brushes, but when it gives up the ghost I'll probably get her a brushless motor. I'm a glutton for punishment!

Just like me with my ping. Including shorter trips, my average miles per cycle is about 10 -12 miles. I've done lots of 100% cycles, but probobally 95% have been to 70-80% and the lame 1c cells are still very happy. Treat em nice and they last quite well. Punch em with 50 amp accelerations all the time and watch em puff up.

I have "only" 18,000km (11,000 miles) on my 5 year old 408. I use it year round and I had to change the bearings once and the hall sensors as well. Main problem is the water/humidity getting inside and damaging the magnets and hub. Over here in Ontario, the salt in winter just make things worse.
A year ago, I just drilled 4 holes in one of the cover (4mm diameter). Except during winter where I put a duct tape on them, I leave them open and it make things a little bit better.
So mixed feeling as I was expecting to do a lot more mileage without any service as this brushless technology is simplistic.
