I am interested in building a high speed board. I have done downhill so have been over 40mph on a board before.

My problem is I have always used drop through decks so not sure about clearance.

Wondering if there are any stiff top mount decks or drop through decks that have been used by the community for high speed applications.

Also would be interested in trucks used, bushings, and wheels.

Lastly if I am using 50mm dual motors does that help with clearance issues? Board would be fairly stiff compared to something like boosted.

Open to ESC, batteries, motor and mount recommendations as well.

Looking to push over 40mph. Range is not too big of an issue as anything over a couple of miles would be fine.

This is a performance build and not a commuter.

Thanks!

Hey Kent,

Nice to see you on here :) Welcome to ES

12S setup with 50/63mm 280kv with 1:2 gearing.

Do you plan on using electric braking and/or braking traditional longboard methods.

44.4v x 60 amps = 2664w * 2 = 5328 watts
44.4v x 80 amps = 3552w * 2 = 7104 watts

Wheel KV Voltage/Cells Drive Pulley Motor Pulley Gearing Ratio Est. MPH
83 280 12 40 20 2.00 60.42838245

Something similar to that.

Hi torqueboards,

I would be want electric braking for sure.

Would you recommend dual motors? And if so would you put them both on the same truck or the scissor type setup?

Also do your welded trucks fit on a drop through deck?

Thanks!

I was looking as this deck if I went top mount setup.

For 40mph, you're going to need dual 6374 motors. If you're going to go that fast, I would recommend buying quality controllers such as the castle creations mamba xl2 or Alien Power System dual hv 150A. Be aware that the castle creations controller will take up to 8S max. For batteries maybe 8S 15Ah or 12S 10Ah nanotech lipo. Basically you are trying to build a very fast board, so you are going to have to shell out for premium components in order to reliably and (somewhat) safely hit your targeted speed.

Motors: dual 6374
Controllers: CC Mamba XL2 or Alien dual HV 150A
Batteries: 8S 15Ah or 12S 10Ah nanotech lipo from hobbyking (voltage based on controller choice)
Trucks: Calibers (these are easiest to mount to, not sure what your preferences are), if you like Paris you could try the mounts from diyelectricskateboard.com
Wheels: Orangatang Kegels, Seismic Speedvents
Deck: There are lots of stiff top mount decks aimed at downhill riders - pick one with a somewhat long wheelbase so you have clearance for everything to fit.

Sample gearing calculation:
6374 motors with 170kv, 12S lipo (44.4V nominal), 80mm diameter wheels, 1:1.5 reduction from motor to wheel

170*44.4 = 7500 rpm at motor
Divide by 1.5 for pulley reduction (maybe make a 28 to 40 reduction using 5mm pitch, 15mm width HTD profile pulleys/belts) = 5000 rpm at wheel
Multiply by 80*pi/25.4/12/5280*60 to convert to mph = 47 mph
Note: 80 is the wheel diameter, pi to get circumference of wheel, 25.4 mm/in, 12 in/ft, 5280 ft/mile, 60 minutes/hour

In reality you probably won't quite hit 40mph unless on a slight decline, but the above setup will net you about 150 pounds of thrust at 150A going into each motor, so it will definitely be a very powerful setup.
