It's my first post so hopefully I'm not breaking any forum etiquette by jumping straight into e-bike technical.
I've got a 500W cyclone motor on one of my MTBs and I've been quite happy with it apart from the noisy gearbox.
I'm considering replacing the metal gears in the planetary gearbox with some nylon ones to reduce some of the noise.
The trouble is I don't know what to order. I don't know anything about the types of gears available or the sizes that they come in.
Does anyone on the forum know about the cyclone gears and can offer some advice? I can post one of the gears if it would help.

Cheers

24V Cyclone and 48V Hi-Koll using 2 X 24V 20Ah LiPos.

post some pictures of the cyclone it is a new name to me.

It's crank drive kit from a company in Taiwan. I tried the 360W kit but found it to be a bit weak so upgraded to the 500W motor.

Thanks again Miles. I think you've given me all I need to get the correct part.

they use the sintered metal gears for their hard wearing properties. nylon would wear out much faster. i think that if you replace one of the sun gears with a nylon one would be enough to cut down the noise to an acceptable level. that has the advantage of still leaving 2 of the long wearing metal gears.

when you do find out the type of gear. please post the type of gear. i would suspect it is metric and not inch.

Hi Rick

Thanks for the advice. The cyclone guys also advised me not to replace the metal gears. They didn't think it would work with nylon gears.
They got a bit negative when I said it was because of the noise but they did offer to take a look at the gearbox to see if it was faulty.
I will try replacing one gear only first to see if that does the trick. If not I don't mined changing the gears one in a while if they start to strip.
I'm a bit slow getting around to these things once I've got a working bike, but will post the details when I've finished the experiment.

Spike,

Did you see this?

Nope, missed it. Just taken a look though. I've tried using different lubs and using damping (rubber pads).
I guess I'm now going to try the "Use High-Vibration-Damping Material" option e.g. Nylon/Cast Iron gears.
The rest of it I'll try to understand before I order the new parts. It's already giving me a head ache :0)

Cheers
