Deecanios first build the "DC1"

Hi Mate

Good little video, looks like a real test for the Puma that terrain does!! nice, well I go out on the Puma inbetween the rain on the Puma, runs fine at 72V, it started raining though but had half an hour on it and it was great, no heat and no smoke and was very powerful, looking good as soon as the rain backs off more I will do an hour a night on it to make sure its going to be ok, I will then order the fets and mod your controller.

Thanks for the video, good first attempt and I was humming that killers tune all afternoon!!

Take care

Catch you soon

Knoxie

Nice video Dee, good to get some fresh stuff on the board. I've been playing nicely at 54v and the GT has been running flawlessly. Other than me trying to do wheelies after a few cold ones (actually ran the rear up from under me), all has been cool and reliable. I need to get a better cam setup as well, the handlebar mount is just too jerky and it cant be any good for my camcorder either. Looks like you have a nice place to do some serious thrashing, those wood trails look like a lot of fun and it seems Knoxie has things going nicely at 72v now. Cant wait for the big day when your Puma is let off of the leash :p

Hi Guys,

Knoxie, you must have gone out on saturday about the same time as me - i waited for the rain for about two hours and it never showed so i thought bugger it and went out - out twenty minutes and it lashed down lol - that terrain sure is a test for the puma but when i get some dry weather i will show you guys just how well it does up any hill, sure i have to help out up the worst ones but with the motor i can climb pretty much any hill there - even the ones i couldn't do just pedalling on a normal mtb :)
great news on the 72v testing mate, sounds like we are going to have a great motor controller combo in the very near future 8) i guess i will have to move my thread to motorcycles once the second lipo and mx seat are in place !! looking to find a custom bike place that will do all the machine work as the little fella is going to look absolutely great once its all done.Glad you liked the tunes ;)
Maytag, glad to hear everything is running well - i've had absolutely no temp probs on the controller or motor or batts, even after a good thrash up some monster hills it doesnt even get warm :)
i will jump straght to 72v as soon as knoxie tells me it's ok, i cant risk blowing the bms on my lipo as i dont have the skills to fix it myself (working on that all the time) i think i will order a second controller and maybe try to mod that myself, lol at least that way i will have a backup should i break one and it will be very good for me to learn how my bike works down to component level.

wet weather aside it was a good ride - most of the time i was forced to go slow as not to crash through puddles and bog but once everything dries out and i figure out how to mount a cam on a baseball cap i'll get a good fast run to show hopefully with less wobbly picture!!!
Looking in your direction guys for some more puma footage, im really pleased with this motor so far - 72v is going to be crazy fast!!!!!

cheers all,

D

hey Y,

yes i did think about steve's setup (anyone know why steve isn't around here? the DM was one of my inspirations to get a bike).
i will try it out but mine's difficult to mount like that - it's like a small fat torch in shape - it did come with many attachments for mounting on helmets and stuff so im sure next time out i will get a better film.
I did find that i had much more footage in another file so i'll post some more if anyone wants to see it? theres a lot more open thrashing in the second vid rather than the tricky hills and bumpy trails.
next time out in the dry i'll mount better and hopefully get some clear electric thrashing on film :)

Cheers all

Hey guys,

nice weekend in the uk :) and the forest dried out quite well by sunday so went for a cruise with my lady around the forest, kirsty had a sony camera that does video so we took a few clips of the bike and im sooo glad we did - just for anyone whos looking at the puma this film shows how quiet this motor is.
I have put a soundtrack on as this was the anthem for my day but i left the video audio nice and loud so you can hear how quiet the whole bike is - the birds are louder than me 8)
a few things...........
on the hill climb bear in mind that my chain still slips so i can't pedal that hard.
I wished we had kept filming - about thirty secs after i came up it like that 4 guys on downhill bikes came up too - all dismounted and all very sweaty  it would have been a perfect clip. These guys were cool and ended up getting a lot of info from them them on parts for my DC2 - they were as interested in my bike as i was theirs, especially the guy who didnt go back down the hill with them - "mmmm so it makes it up here at half power?" lmao.
the front wheel up you see is mainly throttle :) if i yank the bars too much i do come off the back so i'm a little reserved here ;p

Hope you enjoy and all got out riding this weekend,

Anyone for 72 v ????

cheers

Hey M8

Great video!!! we have very similar tastes in music matey!! I have had to catch up on gardening duties this weekend so no riding and that stupid football match ruined yesterday!!

However I have modified 2 of the Lipo packs with 100V fets, they will be good for series connection now. I have the 20A 72V controller to play with as well, I think this will be a great combo for you, however I will endeavour to get you running with your existing controller.

I love the Puma at just 37V however 72V is amazing, the controller is A1 and the batteries are good to go as well, now this week I am stumped! I have to entertain Monday and Tuesday and wed is footie night! however we have Thursday and then its a bank holiday weekend, I intend to take the Puma out for a 72V shakedown until the batteries flat out.

I went out on the BMX testing the new BMS the other night, that was great fun!! people love that bike!! so do I !! I still think there is a market for one of those if we can get it in to a rear wheel.

Thanks for the heads up on the video mate! you are going to love the Puma at 72V!!

Knoxie

hey mate :)
yes the game saturday was piss poor - still i'll be watching on wednesday and hoping for better, copy of last time liverpool beat milan would be nice!!
modified controller and lipo mod ?
you must be chomping at the bit to ride that :)
which battery did you you mod the flip top or the point 1?
yes i love the new kings album - just fitted well with the chilled ride today - i pedaled some too as i was with my gal - it was cracking knoxie, we stuck to the paths more and i found if we both pedaled i could put my arm on her back and help push her up lol - we were out three hours instead of the hour and a half!!! did about 8 miles on 5ah :)
get cracking on the testing mate - you can practically hear my bike calling your name and begging ;p
no worries on the nod mate, you deserve it !!!!!
glad you enjoyed and dont forget to take you cam with you all week - im positively gagging for some more power!!!!

cheers mate

Sooo cool!

That tranquil setting and the sound track make the perfect backdrop. It'd almost be a shame to go any faster, but I'm still looking forward to the 72V version!

Hi

Yes I agree the combo of the music and the laid back angle to the video meant I watched it 3 times a really nice video and you have only just started mate!! so cool, keep the videos coming, I have had a break from videos for a while I am determined to get a reliable 72V rig, I dont think its far off now, its cost a bit and there has been some smoke but its just around the corner.

The little 72V controller is tiny and can be run at 30A 72V! a lot easier to hide, the one I have hear doesnt leak either so I think may work ok at 72V, I can test it to see!! the BMX will be a good candidate!!

Only 6 fets to change if not, nice and cheap!! here is a few piccies of it.

Cheers

lol,
spot on malc, spot on.
I've been keeping an eye on your bike too malc, she's a beauty, some real class work going on there, the mounting of the motor and batts in their own cage then fitting into the original engine mounts was a corking idea well executed.
i hope a get a finish similair to yours when im done so my bike is all finished well, new seat and battery holders, planning an all seat/tank(2ndbatt) combo in black an grey just to finish up - 72v should be amazing !!!!!
the setting is one of 7 or so ponds hidden in the forest, truly i am lucky to live right on top of it - it is stunning.

cheers

Yo

Thats such a great place m8, an e-bike is such a great tool to take in to the forest, if you peddle a little as well you can have such a great time!! Ill have to come and see you with the BMX!! I am going to upgrade the BMX controller to 150V, the new torque arm is great on the BMX now, it hasnt moved yet! I think your lipos will be ok with the 20A controller.

I checked the tyre on the BMX its quite worn! ha ha it wheel spins so easily, I use the BMX as a local runner, its great I go to the shops down to Tescos, its a great local flyer and so much fun!!

Knoxie

ok mate so im kinda interested in that controller :D
how do we run it at 30a ? i would take that and no mistake!!
it would be easy to hide and then i could put the other lipo where the controller is now - man that could work out sooo cool, fat seat
wow, i need more info mate :) - any chance of lending it to me? ;p
glad you liked the vid, don't forget i wouldn't even have the bike if you hadn't of let me know it was time as far as motor and batts go to get involved.
Thanks again mate - im loving my ride!!!!

Cheers

Hi M8

Yes I think this controller will be a better option, this is the same as the controller Steve is using on the DM, except he has 2 x windings, It can be run at 30A by simply bridging the shunt, the same as the other controller.

I think I will modify this one with the 150V fets and fit the washers though to be safe, I have some of the official silver shunt wire so can pop it in and make this controller 150V 30A officially, this controller is a lot smaller and should still do the business for you.

Its Marks controller but I am sure he will be ok with you having it mate no problem, I will check with him, I will order the fets from Farnell for it, I only need 2 as I have 4 already in stock, I will get it modified and test it.

Its all yours mate 8)

Knoxie

Hi Malc,

i live on the border of east london/essex bang on junction 26 of the M25.
It's Epping Forest if you fancy a google earth - great place to have fun on a bike of any discription.
Knoxie,
one thing i did think about the other controller mate, if it's upgraded for 30a will it cause me a problem on my point 1's ? also if i fancy a long run i'll lose some power at 36v mmmmm, that said its unlikely i will return to 36 once i've tried 72 :) 2160w should make me go quite nicely !!!!!
it is a great little controller mate, very cool - no on/off button?
looking forward to trying this out, let me know if you need some fet backing ;p

cheers mate

Andy

Hi Mate

No its a simple little controller, Steve Head runs his one at 30A now, I would change the fets as a matter of course, I even think it may work ok with the batteries you have as its not so hard on the BMS, you would just have to keep a close eye on the Drain Brain and make sure the pack doesn't cut make sure you go home once you have used 18AH, it may survive the controller diving under load as the caps are smaller and wont fire back such a hefty thump, I would be surprised if this one fried the packs you have.

I would try it at 20A with the batteries you have, if it works I will send you a piece of proper bridging wire, you can then solder the link in yourself! its only a 5 min job for 30A you can get to it easily, I will order the Fets, modify it and test it for you, I will send it on to you you can then have a go. It may be that 20A is enough power as the motor will be a lot more jazzy under 72V even at 20A, if you are happy with 20A I would leave it, 20A at 72V it will do 30mph on the flat in a 20 inch wheel.

Cheers

Knoxie

Hi mate,

yes i think that maybe this controller would do a treat but i need you to explain/correct me on a few things.
if im running series i thought i would have to still stop below 9ah? same as a single battery (i really don't know enough here).
also on the power i need to understand the wattage/volts/amps in relation to power that i know.
i run 36v x 35a at the mo so thats 1260w which is ok.....ish,sort of,not enough ;) but torque is good.
so if i run 72v x 20a thats 1440w but where do i lose and what do i gain?
voltage affects rpm directly is that right? so top end would be improved what about torque/acceleration?
im all up for having a go at the little controller though mate and if i can run it at 72v30a all the better  (will i then be in bms danger teritory?) the size of it really appeals and knowing it can do 30a is just stonking! makes it easier to build a finish for the bike too :)
lets give it a go then mate as you haven't been wrong yet, ill try it at 72v20a and then mod it if i need to, i will need to, but we can discuss later

cheers mate,

D

I"m using that same 72v 20 amp controller on the Chaos, with my dual-speed motor ( using a relay to switch ) .. it's a good controller to use as you can easily add cooling if needed using the metal bottom ridges.

I think the 20amps would be fine, if the motor won't pull hard enough at 20 amps.. use the pedals and save your batteries !! :p

hey Y,

im not so convinced 20a will do it for me but i'll give it a try - 30 would be very cool 8) i dont mind dropping from the original 72v35a to 72v30a just to have the smaller controller (might be easier for me to work on and learn how to) but i think it has to be 30a - im thinking if i run my batts in paralell for a long ride i'd have less power than now and that wouldn't be good
but if 72v20 is say 30% hike in performance that would do?
this is why i need to understand how things work better - i dont mind a top speed of 30mph thats great but i do want oooomph when i throttle :)
what do you guys think?

D

Hi m8

Its a little late as I have been out at moms with the family, but yeah you are right its 10A doh! brain fart!! its just I am dealing with another person who is running them in parallel  yea 72V 10AH!

You will be getting twice the volts per turn so you will see roughly double the acceleration with an appreciable increase at the top end, I know as I can vouch having run both setups a number of times, the difference in from 37V to 48V started snapping things on the BMX then 72V started shredding tyres, wheel spinning bending torque arms, blowing controllers and battery BMS!! ha ha so yes there is quite a difference.

I would be surprised if you dont feel 72V 20A, thats 1500W in a 20 inch wheel pretty much instantly, the rig may be pulling high watts and amps lower down but this makes a difference at 72V, also your packs wont be getting hit as hard and wont dip or sag at all, less likely to shutdown and 1500W should be enough for you.

The fets will be in tomorrow, if I pull my finger out I should be b
able to mod it and send it to you for the weekend, I would be amazed if your packs fail in series with this controller, I will stick my neck out and say ill repair them if they do! ha ha may live to regret that one! ha ha nah I reckon you will be ok, change the main batt fuse to 30A.

Both my lipos are now modified, just havent got time to do anything until the weekend now, will let you know.

You can then have a bank holiday at 72V! ha ha

Cheers

Knoxie

hey mate,

yes that sounds absolutely great, possibly the weekend ?
that could be soooo cool, unfortunately/fortunately my cameragirl is away this weekend on her hen party so i have all weekend to rig up 72 and take it for a trial run, i'll leave things at 20a and see how it goes, knowing it can go to 30a is a nice thing to have "in the bag".
wooohooo 72v  could be fantastic!!!
see what you can do mate but don't bust a gut for me, i'm sure you have loads that you want to do for yourself too?hopefully you will get some time to reep the rewards of your hard work and get out there too :)
let me know how your getting on mate and i'll order up some andersons so i can rig up a series cable :)

it's going to be corking mate - please don't rain, please don't rain!!!

cheers knoxie

Hi Mate

Yes the forecast isn't looking too marvellous for us! well that is to be expected isn't it as it is a bank holiday weekend, still I will try and get it to you on Saturday or before, I have run it by Mark and he is ok with it as its kind of a trial thing, I am pretty sure the batteries will be ok at that kind of power anyway.

I will test it before I send it to you by rigging it up to the BMX, Its only 6 fets so should be easy enough for me to do, tomorrow is a write of coz of the match but should be ok to test going to work Thursday and get sent off to you maybe Thursday for Friday, I will let you know how I get on with it.

If I think it may need more testing I will run it on the 26 incher with the beefy lipos to make sure its going to work, this may mean you dont get it until next week some time, I will see how it runs! it may be better to hang back a few days that rush things, either way we will will get you running at least at 20A by hook or by crook within the next few days/week at most.

Don't know how it performs until we try it!

Cheers

Knoxie

yeh no worries mate, don't rush i am more than happy to wait until your totally satisfied we are set :)
cheers for all the help mate, i appreciate it !!!!
