divide by 2 the speed sensor

reference background leading to my question.... BBSX mid drive here for this conversation....
people move the speed sensor magnet to the pedal crank , rather than attached to a wheel spoke to fool the controller into maintaining assistance power to a higher speed.
This seems like it would not be a tracking sense as gears were shifted, as the original wheel speed would vasty change while the pedal cranck speed would not when road speed increases.

Has anyone considered a simple 'divide by 2' ckt (a simple single chip D flip-flop IC) that would cut the road speed single in half, but would still track increasing road speed? It could be put directly in line with the oem spoke magnet triggered speed sensor. Your display would at least read a changing road speed, albeit 1/2 the actual.
