Do our controllers pose any health risk?

I did some searching on the web and didn't come up with much...
...searched the forums here and didn't come up with much either...
in my ignorance of battery chemistry + physics in general - is there any "radiation" when the lithium-ion battery is discharging so much energy? My only concern is, if there was, then your butt is right there on the seat next to where this is happening (my battery is located directly behind seat).
I'm just trying to educate myself so that I can explain these kinds of things when people bombard me with so many questions - I understand that there are many ebikers out there all riding along and not much talk of it on the forums here - so it must have been looked at from a safety perspective - does anyone out there know what is happening from a physics perspective? I know people have debated on cellphones and proximity of battery to body - what about a gigantic battery that is discharging a large volume of energy?
Pointers to any existing activity on the forum - or articles elsewhere on the web - or just straight education, would be greatly appreciated.

As far as i understand it, anything that produces heat or light or electromagnetic interference can produce radation so..

Better run and hide, from everything :)
 
Nothing more than EMF radiation I'd think. It's not going to radiate any more than background radiation for that material. Granite countertops for instance, sets off the radiation detectors in the ports, but still way too low to harm anybody.

I't not like your microwave, or cell phone that actually emits a radio frequency.
 
There are two types of radiation: ionizing (tends to be bad... like x-rays and spewing Japanese reactors) and non-ionizing (like lights and electricty/radios). Ebikes (and all things electrical) only put out non-ionizing. Don't worry about it. Or if you do, schlep your paranoid ass out to the middle of nowhere and cower :twisted:
 
Yeah, just don't do it in the middle of nowhere in New Mexico. We got some good background radiation. Even better in Questa near the old radium mine. Better still they say, at the old Los Alamos dump ground. :lol:
 
Not a concern for anyone except the conspiracy folk.

It is a valid question for someone not familiar with the technology.

Ever notice that you sometimes feel tired after traveling a long distance in a car? Reason is all the electromagnetic fields and radiation flying out of the alternator and all the wiring in the car. I need to shut this computer down and go sleep in the woods :|

No radiation is emitted from batteries, unless you count VERY low level infra-red from the simple fact it's warm (your body body emits more, it's how thermal imaging works). The worry with mobiles was never anything to do with the battery. Cell phones emit microwaves (same as the radiation used in a microwave oven). Microwaves are absorbed by water molecules whoch effectively raises the temperature of the water. In a microwave oven the water in food is heated by microwaves, and the heat then cooks the food. As cell phones emit microwaves, and your body is 60% water, people got worried that a cellphone would cook you (which it does, but very slowly ;)). Cell phones arent a worry, batteries are even less so. An arc generated by a short circuit emits a fair amount of Ultraviolet light, which could cause sunburn if you were exposed to it for a while (which is why welders tend to wear full face masks), but that's about the worst. Certainly no cancer-causing nastiness for your butt to worry about.

A straightforward answer from a physics perspective to someone who knows nothing about that sort of thing was exactly what I was looking for.
I just didn't know what was happening back there with all the chemical --> electricity going on. Now I know. Wasn't being paranoid. Just looking for an answer to tell people so I can defend myself against the bombardment of questions....

Whoever asks a question like that would be better off with a punch in the dick than a scientifically sound explanation.
I mean you are literally talking to someone who probably believes that wireless signals are responsible for ( their ) mental disorders.

If you live in an area of particularly ignorant folks, then my apologies.

Now I understand my mental disorder. I've been getting ES wirelessly for almost three years. Just imagine all those watthours and amps flying around my house wirelessly. :wink:

As I sit here reading this thread with the 'puter on my lap, I was considering wrapping my gonads in lead. Then I read that aluminum foil would do. Before I could finish my foil wrap, DW has peed her pants laughing, while trying to make a phone call to have me committed. I think I will have to become more selective in which threads I read. I wonder how TSA will view my "safety net" before my next flight.

...can someone give some insight into the potential hazards and possible solutions to sheilding E.M.R. comming from the high power battery packs/cicuits present in our E-machines.

I was asked the question..."How do you protect yourself from E.M.R...." I had no answer. I am basically straddling my power pack, part of which is only a few inches from my testis... and a lot of you would be the same.

What's the low down??

Controllers and the motor on the other hand, yes. They are constantly switching on and off.
The battery, not so much. Nothing really magnetic in it to create magnetic fields.. you know!

There are plenty of other reasons not to mount the batteries right next to your junk anyway :)

Any time any conductor has a change in the rate of current flowing through it, electromagnetic radiation is emitted.

However, the frequencies we are dealing with are a few orders of magnitude too low to be a concern.
