E-S Stealth Electric Bike Owners

Zero is in Australia now so that might be the first one to test. But they are all motorcycles, and to me that's a totally different category to an electric bike with pedals (if the pedals useful egg geared for your speeds) even if it has high power. )

On my ebike, my feeling is like to drive a motorcycle with pedals without motorcycle weight penalty.

That exactly what I'm trying to do, like many users here  , I'm curious to see your next project, good day!

Voicecoils,
My apologies, I've looked through the forums (E-S, TF, and the Google Group), but I can't find some of the impressive mods you made to your old Fighter.
What voltage were you running? 75V? 100V?
What was your max speed? (I am very interested in this)
0-50 kph?
With the presumably higher speeds, was the lighter Fighter still stable?

In about a years time, when I become more educated, I plan on following your lead. Thanks for the impressive example.
-Jetman

Hi Jetman, I tried a few battery configurations because lithium polymer RC packs are so modular. First 62v hot then 83v hot (off the charger voltages).

I used Method's 100v100A custom 18fet controller that he only made a short run of, no longer made. Today, a controller from Lyen is probably the next best option.

Motor was the x5304.

I don't have accurate acceleration stats to give you, REMF posted some interesting stuff from his Bomber a while back with an accelerometer program. The Fighter feels excellent at 60 km/h, very stable. The Bomber feels even more planted though with more weight, more suspension travel and more suspension sag.

With a custom controller, various speeds can easily be obtained with different voltages. Kepler is running well over 100v for example so he has a faster setup. Going fast drains your battery fast though.

My bike's top speed was between a stock Fighter & Bomber at 70-75 km/h. The new Fighter is even lighter then mine was and it's 50 km/h speed is probably well matched for a more nimble bike.

Cheers!

So there it is again, the usual this is not difficult and anyway so overpriced. Well, i´m not trying to offend anyone here, but i work as a mechanic in the product developement departement of a German printing machine manufacturer. My boss rode the bomber just a few days ago. He´s not just an engineer, but also has made is doctor in mechanics. Curious as he is and a real math crack, he measured the frame, did some calculations and said it´s theoretically just as beutiful as it was to ride in real life. To come up with something like that it takes years. So yeah, all those that brag around telling people it´s simple. Take a closer look. Just try to weld the sheet metal pieces of the frame together. I´m pretty shure you´ll end up with a twisted piece of metal, that´ll look like it came from Homer Simpson´s garage himself. :) Next the electronics. I´ve ridden this bike for some month now, played with the parameters and must say that there´s nothing to improve here. Ok, you can always go for more volts, or amps, or simply install a bigger battery. But then all the extra weight will force you to build an even tougher frame. Where i work, we sometimes take years just to develope a new gripper shaft that´s capable of 20000 sheets/min. When you look at it, it´s simple appearance will surely make you think that this is no big deal. Yup, things change however when you build a copy and then wonder why the damn thing never reaches this speed. The Chinees haven´t come up with a copy of our machines yet. They will in the future, i´m sure about that. In the present though, the 120 years of experience we have passed on through generations can´t be beat. I love to disassemble stuff and examine the inside values. I´ve done so with the bomber. Out of plain curiosity. Building an equivalent bike will definetley not be so much cheaper.Check out the price list of the components here in Germany i´ve included below. Let´s face it, Stealth Bikes is a company and has a right to make some profit. I´m shure that shoe manufacturers make loads more money by paying low wages and treating their workers like garbage. I prefer to pay more and know that my product is made in a country where this is not the case. Ok, there´ll be exeptions, but it´s no standard in Australia.

1. V-Boxx 970€
2. 48 Cell Lifepo4 Battery 1730 €
3. GatorBrake 420 €
4. The Crystalyte motor and controller 850 €
5. The white brothers forks 900 €

That´s a total of 4870 €. There´s no frame in that price, no handelbars, no rims, or tires and loads of small pieces i haven´t mentioned here. Oh and don´t forget the rear shox. You won´t find one on the standard bike market that´ll fit . I think it´s custom made for Stealth. In my opinion, it´s faster, safer and less frustrating to buy a perfect product then spend hours in the machine shop without knowing the result. The Cannondale i´ve electrified took me almost a year to complete. I´ve manufactured most pieces and of course not all of them where perfect at the first try. :)

i imagine they have some kind of warranty as well, no? gotta have some padding for that!

don't recall seeing this vid before, so i'm posting it. pretty amazing jump at the start. haven't seen that with other ebikes...

i notice the weight is very balanced there for that jump. i'm surprised the rear tire doesn't drop more. is it more balanced or is that just practice to compensate?

-not an owner yet, just a wannabe... <drooling>

I did not say that i wanted to "COPY" it...

I'm going to have a go a building something similar.

I'm an organic farmer I do not have a disposable income, despite producing 2 tonne of fresh food per month.

I live in a rural area. I and many I have introduced ride ebikes to get around local area. We see it as an alternative to the ag bikes we all own. So, from my perspective spending $8000+ on what is an electric bicycle seems indulgent beyond belief. I can picture the suit throwing the bomber into the back of the pristine 4WD ute and driving to a trail somewhere.

So calm down people, I understand all too well what it is to run a business, and I have no intention of ripping off anything from anyone. I simply want to use the geometry of the bomber so that I and a couple of friends can "have a go" at building an agricultural ebike.

Really, if you didn't bang on about how well the effing thing handles then I wouldn't have effing bothered.

If cost is an issue then convert one of the bikes you own for $600

Oh, and the vid is blocked in some countries because of the song.. Well, here's the one I prepared earlier (just add music)
know way of knowing what tunes will get blocked. after uploading vid to youtube, click the audioswap tab, pick a genre, preview a song, publish when you've found one you like. takes a couple hours. annoying ad will show up, but hard to beat convenience, since my music collection sucks anyway.

loving what's going on in this thread! more pics and video!
Thanks for the tip!

The last vid seem to be ok - picked an obscure cover and edited it.

Some good points being raised.

Whilst I love the Docs bike I don't think its even comparable with the stealth, Docs bike is a superfast off road bike for on the road riding for me, I think the battery box and other parts would have a tough time off road, I dont think DOC is a hard and fast off road mountain biker, its a great effort no doubt about that but it was never meant to be a bomber.

Gow take a chill pill 8) fully understand the situation however for the reasons already mentioned I would doubt you find what you are looking for within this thread at least. IMHO your best approach would be to follow Hyenas approach, just check his videos to see what a normal but fairly decent hard tail can do off road with off the shelf parts.

I would take a bomber over an electric motorbike any day of the week, for me they have got it nailed, an electric off road motorbike with peddles that can be made road legal at the flick of a switch, a battery compartment that accepts a large format or bunch of cells, great geometry, great handling, pretty much off the peg parts as far as motors batts and controllers go ( easily upgradable)

When you compare this to the optibike which is more money and less powerful its a no brainer, the opti has very limited ability to fit any other type of battery, a totally custom drive unit and electronics, just like the failed tidal force bikes its this non standardisation approach that is the downside to the opti and many other doomed ebikes.

Anyway thats off track, good luck with the build oh and by the way Black arrows bike was one of the best copies I saw.

Knoxie,

My ebike is not a "copy" of Stealth bomber it just as a closer "look" like my Honda Accord sedan 2007 as closer look of Hyundai Sonata sedan 2007. A frame with battery in it (same for Stealth) is the only way to build an ebike with great handling capability and great cornering, after that you need to keep it well balanced, no rocket science here.

At first I was very tempting to get the real dimension of a Stealth Bomber by retro engineering it from pictures. Since that I have the exact dimension of the gear box is relatively easy to build an exact copy, in fact every Bomber's here is just a perfect copy of the "original prototype" after many and trials and errors ebikes.

I have ride many times with Doc last summer, one of our particularly ride was a night ride he was on his DH ebike and I was on mine, we following each others at speed between 40 and 50 Km/h in this local trail I have here (off road). With 5400 lumens (with both ebikes) at our disposal this "night" ride was very funny and quit impressive, but it was one of the coldest summer night at 4 degrees Celsius.

I can't answer which ebike has the "best" handling and cornering for off road riding and I don't care about it. The only thing I can say for sure is Doc and I are able to ride at speed in the same trails that I saw in many video's in this thread and we don't need a Stealth Bomber or fighter to doing it. 8)

At the end building your own ebike is not the cheapest option if you don't have any parts before starting a project like this, the Stealth Bomber or Fighter is the turn key solution and cheapest than an Optibike. If I'm counting my hours, parts and machining and other goodies for this ebike I can buy at least (3) Bomber for the same price! .

Good day!

Hey members and Stealth owners. I´ve got some questions concerning the V-Boxx gear unit. The instruction book asks for an oil change ever 2500 Km. I´ve used 150 ml of a chain cleaning solution to wash the internal gears of the old oil. On the bottom of the crank casing you just have to remove the center screw to release the used oil. They recomend a light oil in the manual without loosing a word on it´s viscosity. I´ve filled it with SAE 10W40. Hope that´s ok. I´ve noticed that the 4th gear makes a lot more noise then the others, that are only barely audible. Can this be considered normal behaviour? It´s just the sound gears make when they rotate. Nothing to worry about. Since the gears have straight teeth instead of angled ones its normal to hear some wirring while pedaling. Just wanted to know what you´ve experienced. Compared to the old fashioned chain shifting systems the v-boxx to this day worked perfectly. Maybe someone out there has any more tips. I´d really apreciate them. :)

10W40 sounds a little thicker than I would expect although I would doubt it would make much difference, quick email to stealth would be my first port of call.

I think you might mean "grease" rather than "fat".

Fat is dead animals.

Grease is a lubricant.

You can use fat as grease, I guess last night's roast will make you gears smell yummy....for a while....

The gearbox calls for grease NOT oil, very big diff.

9 speed Vboxx download link for the PDF manual:

http://www.srsuntour-cycling.com/customGates/scripts/download.php?filename=owners_manuals_2010/2010_OWNERS_MANUAL_VBOXX.pdf

Its possible the manual's wording is wrong as grease starts about 90 W and gets far thicker where the normal range of oils can be from 0-40W.

This needs looking into as they should list the exact weight and type.

Yay I got some great news from stealth electric bikes today. My bomber is finished. I also got some not so great news, due to the rescent tradgity in japan battery production has been slooooowed down. So no battery for three more weeks. I'm gunna have to get some sleeping pills to make through these next three weeks!!!

I also have a Bomber on order and was told the very same for USA shipment. Are you also USA and if so any where near NYC?

The odd thing is that I assumed the battery's were Chinese but if from Japan I fear the 3 weeks may be far longer.

I have seen your bikes waiting at the factory and they look beautiful. :) Quite a range of colours there now too. There is a Yellow Fighter there with carbon trimming that looks amazing.

Sorry to hear of the holdup. Must be very frustrating but I know John is doing all he can to get them out to you.

Nah, I'm not frustrated, just glad we didn't git hit by a tsunami!!!!! Good things come with time!!
Do you have any video of your 125volt bomber?

The Bomber is a remarkable ebike but you can build a more power full, lighter ebike with better handling, more range with your own Lipo's battery box for less then any Bomber just read this thread it show you how to do it

I'd agree that you can make a cheaper bike with more power or more range or lighter. But trying to do all 3 and get a bike that handles just as well? If you want the bike to handle well, the batteries have to be in the frame. Beyond that, Stealth has been refining their geometry and suspension for years now and have it pretty well dialed in.

I hit up to 17kW on my old modded Fighter, Kepler's running super high voltage (125v?) on his Bomber... more power & speed is the easy part, other aspects are more challenging.

Hey Voicecoils, I think I beat you today  How does over 21 kW sound :p

P1010030.jpg

I know its just a peak but it sure looks impressive. Some serious regen going on there too. Made a few programming changes. Lifted the block time to 4 and increased speed to 120%. Very responsive and top end speed is way quicker then anyone with just a bike helmet on should be doing. Pulls about 8kW constant under load. So far the Lyen 18FET is holding up very well. I think I might have blown my warranty though :)

Seeing I am doing most of riding on the road, decided to change to a road tire. Went with a pair of Schwalbe Crazy Bobs. 24 x 2.35. These have a nice wrap around tread and should have a bit of grip off road also. Tested them this afternoon. Really good road grip and so quite after running fully knobies for so long. Also of on the tracks. A bit squirmy under hard accel but better then I though they would be. Price is very reasonable too. Price ranges from $20 to $30 bucks a tire depending where you get them from.
