E-Trike Project

Miles..have you any 'concerns' suggestions (aside from raising pivot point hehee) for the setup im 99% set on doing...ie. copying this setup--->

Hi Kim,

I'm sure your set-up will be fine for your needs.

Pivot points on mountain bikes are often a bit of a compromise, in order to minimise interaction between the pedal input and the suspension.

Thanks Miles ;) If i was racing downhill etc im sure things would be a lil different but as i will be flat pavement only i think we shall be ok :) I do appreciate your advice mate, always good to get input from those "in the know" not to blow wind up your ass here but your e-bike would have to be one of the best setups i have seen in my travels..thanks again for takin the time to comment mate:)

Kim,

How will the drive be, with this set-up?

Best to get the line of the final drive chain passing close to the pivot point, if possible.

I will be making up brackets to hold a 'bottom tube' (the tube your crank thing-a-ma-jig goes into) so as it is above the pivot point of the lower swing arm. I plan to buy one of these
to keep the tension on the chain, usually i would knock up something myself to do the job buuut...

I had one in my hand today Matt (1000watt) bought one for his ali build chopper fiiiine peice of engineering...

I shall 'mock' up the intended placement of motor/crank tomorrow Miles to better show the setup ;) Suffce to say it will have motor driving the crank (opposite side to the sprockets) the chain from crank to 6 speed sprocket thinga-ma-jig :) Soz for the "over technical" terms mate LoL..

p.s can anyone tell me the time difference between Perth WA and California (i believe that is where ChoppersUS is...agh i regret not paying attention at school these days (take note youngins PAY ATTENTION IN SCHOOL if you dont know ASK !! agh school days BEST days now lookin back at it...) I cant workout how to uhm ha workout the difference myself i know you yanks are a day behind us Aussies........cheers fellas (and ladies)

What a fantastic ride! This is one thread that I'm definitely glued to. Good on ya!

Perth is at UTC +8 and California is UTC -7 so there's a 15 hour time difference. When it's 10 pm at night in Perth, it's 7am in California, so if you want to reach them during business hours, business hours:

12 midnight Perth is 9am in California
8 am Perth is 5 pm California time

So I guess you either have to stay up late or wake up early!

Got the issue with a tracking number for my consignment sorted out with Alan at ChoppersUS :)

My brother dropped by yesterday witha a couple of 'donor' bikes for me i am thinking of knocking up a quick frame out of possibly for a small 49cc 4 stroke ICE engine (my brother has the 2 stroke variety, goes well but is noisy and smelly)

Donor_bikes.jpg

Back soon anywayz...

Ok... so i got distracted ....again Miles and yes i change my mind more than a wiminez, sue me ;-P anyhoot have time and you saw the donor bikes in the previous post they were screaming out to me "kim cut us up .. cut us up" hrmz looking back might have been the wacky weed but i digress :p ... me+5inch angle grinder+mig+ 2 hours=

Trike_frame_mark%20II_series_pic_3.jpg

(obviously the pink "additions" will be made in steel and added for strength etc...

I like the look another 2 hours tomorrow ill have usable frame i can bolt a trike conversion rear end too pack with batteries and/or lCE motor hehe FYI the frame in pic is lighter than MarkII chopper style frame im currently working on ;-| The frame is ~20cm longer stretch than stock, hmmz 10-15 degrees increase rake (plan to add rake to forks to bring it to ~30-40 degree rake) and have reduced the height by ~10cm on stock mountain bike frame i would guess soz lil late and JB Black & pizza time so no "exact" measurements shall get those by days end tomorrow....what will i do with it ::shrugs:: not sure... just knew it would be a breeze to cut and re-weld a couple frames tubes line up easy and the rear end is made...just a lil break from the full custom frame... will finish welding it up tomorrow before continuing on the markII 'chopper style frame ;)

...back soon peoples...

Neet job, but it aint art like your "real" trike!

hehe true Doc ... i am pretty handy with my airbrushes though so could be a good canvas for some art ;-P time will tellz ;) cheers for comments mate

Kim

Well i been forced out of my workshop for a few hours as the exterminator is spraying so i thought i would take a quick pic to post.

Trike_frame_mark%20II_series_pic_4.jpg

I fully welded the frame this morning, still need to make some custom shock mounts i wont be using the originals along with some bracing brackets for the bottom and front tube connection.

The bike measures 1870mm from front of tire to back of tire (thats ~6 foot 2-3? in the outdated money)

Back with more on one or the other projects soon ladies and gents ;)

Kim

Almost looks like one of Safe's racers, but less birdcage! That a long reach to the bars from the seat!
otherDoc

aaagh ::getz out angle grinder and begins re-modeling:: :p I wouldnt use those bars doc the reach though isnt as long as it seems though to be honest, its very much same as standard mountain bike position, i think having the 20in wheels on it makres it look a little more stretched than it actually is Doc.

UPS Track and trace of my trike conversion tellz me it cleared Australian customs this arvo at 2.30pm, theres a chance i'll see it tomorrow if not Monday ;)

Kim

I spent the weekend panel beating my mates 2006 Toyota Hilux some retard decided to back into and piss off without leaving
a note, he was quoted over a grand to have the dent pulled and tail light replaced so i said i would do it for him for cost of paint etc..
soooo... not alot got done on my frame, i did manage to strip everything back Sunday morning before my mate rocked up though
and my trike rear end and new rear shock arrived this arvo also ! 7 days from point of sale not to shabby...

Trike_frame_mark%20II_TRIKE_REAR_SERIES_PIC.jpg

I have loosely bolted it on, the mounting plate needs a little trimming so as it slides right in properly and sits straight, i'm having a 'rest'
day today arms are sore from sanding mates car. Shall get some more work done tomorrow and update the worklog..

Ciao for now...

Kim

Wow, thats a realy nice rear end..... um, for the trike! Is the front fork the final version, or are U still gonna use the Springer?
otherDoc

hehe yeah its really heavy duty i was surprised, the tubing looks alot smaller diameter in all the pictures i have seen of the conversions kits. I had word from Alan over the weekend when asking for quote on freight for the 4in rims and 'racing slicks' as safe calls them hahaa agh poor delusional fella anywayz the springer forks are still MIA and Alan cant give me a time on them. For this frame i can use stock mountain bike forks (i have my eye on a set on ebay also, the variety that has the tubes right up either side of the head tube, apologies i have no idea of their 'proper' name) as the rake isn't severe enough to need extending them, i also have heaps of ground clearance when i had the crank on when bike was mocked up i have the width of a pedal clearance from bottom of the crank (which wouldnt be enough if i was using pedals obviously but i am not, just gives you an idea of ground clearance ;) Cheers for the interest Doc :)

Kim

I decided in place of a bracket to reinforce the front down tube i would add an additional 'upright tube' (look closely also includes mounting points for drink...erm stubby holder ;-P well i need a place for my "roadie" I am an Aussie after all and we needz our beer like you Americans need war and the imperial system :p) this not only reinforces the front joint but the rear 'pivot' that i joined to the lower 'parallel' tube

Trike_frame_mark%20II_series_pic_6.jpg

Im happy with the look and i'm more comfortable my test rider (Flavio) will come out of the incredibly steep downhill high speed test run alive and in one piece hehehe (the objective is to obliterate 'safes' top speed even if i dont fit the motor and doing so without being hunched over like a dog takin a crap :p) ... As can be seen i also gave the trike conversion some "love" so as it fits neatly. I also spent a few hours cleaning up the welds today, Matt (1000 watt) has found a place that will powder coat the frames including powder coat undercoat for $au55 so welds must be neat ;)

I want to finish the drive train off tomorrow, this will include fabricating motor mount and fitting the drive gear for the motor to front crank/sprocket...

More tomorrow ladies ;)

p.s My local bike shop has agreed to lace up my trike hubs into 20in rims for 35 a pop so shall drop them off tomorrow ;)

Wow! 55 bucks for powdercoat! I'll send my trike down there! Alloy, with no welds! As usual, your work is nice looking and square, Aussie. What more could a man want!

well alloy! hehe its steeel im afraid Doc tiz very square though im padantic about that 0.5mm out is NOT acceptable in my book .. does look like the alloy Mountain bikes though dont it... unfortunately i only have a gasless mig at my workshop BUT will be TIG within 6 months my best mate is finalizing buying a company that sells welding equipment and i have a spare storage garage the stock will be kept in so future projects will be TIG welded...and 98% likely to be alloy... As for the Powder coating yeah i was shocked at the price and i dont think anyone can get it, Matt has dealt with the company before i gather and they are giving him a "good deal" I wish he would post his two latest builds here they are superb, one is all alloy chopper the other made from same tubing my latest is made of. Both are on another site. Anyhoot thanks again for taking the time to comment doc much appreciated buddy ;)

Sorry! I meant my bike is alloy with bolts! Thats how Sid Gowdy of Tricruiser2000 fame made them. No welds, like Ultralights. Its quite ugly but really works well. I'm in version 4.1 now! Yours may be prettier, but mines is lighter! :)

aaaah my apologies Doc ;) I heard ultra lights were bolted not welded, makes sense alloy dont bend much around the welds it just snaps wouldn't be 'as' bad if a bike frame broke but obviously couple hundred meters up in the air you dont want a wing deciding to part company. Very clever of you to apply it to your frame anywayz bud :) I gather you wont be stopping at version 4.1 though? whats new on the drawing boad do we getz a an exclusive 'scoop' right here right now hehehe Out of curiosity do you know the weight of your trike Doc? I'll try weighing mine today on some bathroom scales and see how heavy she is, i know that as it is now is waaaay lighter than my original frame without the swing arm on it.

U dont know the half of version 5.0!! Its in the mail right now coming from Tennissee!(sp?) I'll put up photos as soon as they arrive! :) :) :)
otherDoc

I do now as you know and am VERY much looking forward to the fabrication process Doc...Those that haven't seen Docs latest mosey over here and checkout another use for snow skis.. ::wink::

LiL Update on my build....

A seemingly "easy" straight forward piece to make...a motor mount...well, has taken up all day to do..shall let the pics show what was done as i have a few mates
here knocking back some JBs and don't wan't to be completely unsociable (note* i have not got the correct bolts to mount motor in newly fabricated motor mount, hence the ventilation holes may not seem "lined" up i can assure you they will be when correct size bolts are used ;) Obviously there is still some welding to do buuuut mates arrived and was 'bourbon o'clock' so....

Trike_frame_mark%20II_series_pic_8.jpg

Small step closer more soon...

Kim

Nice metal work! Did U countersink those holes on the chain gear?? I always thought J&B was Scotch???????? Must be different in upside-down land :) But the thought is the same!
