ES Site Maintenance and Upgrades, Oct 22nd - 30th

The google search is good. Can you make the check box persistent however?

My only request would be you make the user location field mandatory for all users. Country minimum.

That's not a bad idea, but it might not be possible. If it is, it would make the forum a better place. Would make it easier answering questions too.
Definitely possible. I supplied a link for it about a year ago. I found it here.

So the following changes have been implemented to the board by MRVass during the latest downtime:

  1. There is now a 15 minute edit time window in which you can modify your post after submitting without it showing up on the edit history. That way if you make and catch a really silly mistake, or are obsessive about finding typos after a post, then the rest of the world won't have to know.
  2. The Etech skin for those or you who have customized to this style has been upgraded to the latest version, and was modified to include the google search too.
  3. Thanks to BigMoose there is a bunny, with a pancake hat, jumping around the smiley faces. :pancake:
(Submissions for other custom emoticons welcome)
  4. We have installed a utility that will allow the auto thumbnailing, resizing, and zooming on uploaded images. However, at the moment it is still deactivated while we figure out exactly what parameters are optimal for this board.
  5. It is now possible to upload multiple attachments at a time with the Prosilver skin. You will see a small '+' by the "add the file" button, and you can click this for each additional file you want to upload, then hit "add the file" to upload all of them.
    MultiAttachment.png
It's still not as convenient as being able to select multiple files in the add file dialog, but it's still a big improvement when you want to do a post with multiple pics.
  6. There is now a requirement to fill out a country field on registration. People can still write whatever they like, but at least by being prompted most people will put something honest I imagine.

If its not to late..

Wow how could I miss this out;
I hope I am not too late. Thanks to etriker who informed me of this event. I feel very much proud to be the member of ES community. I love it with all my heart and soul. It has become a part of me now. I would be greatly honoured.
Two pictures One Before: when my bike won the science competition and it was a normal straight moped electric bike.
Low Cost Electric Bike.jpg
The other picture which is now when it has been converted to a recumbent.
Picture No. 2 will be posted tomorrow in day light and a fresh one recently taken tomorrow.
Thanks Justin; you are a hero. You are the superman of ES indeed.

I hate to burst your bubbles for some of your pictures, but you do realize that having more conservative pictures that show how to make a bike into a friendly vehicle for both cars, pedestrians, and other bicyclists would benefit the movement far better than bikes that go Vrooom @ 40-50mph! Just my take on it. :pancake:

Probably, but there are a lot of people that have no interest in a "wimpy" ebie, and want something powerful, even if they can only use it offroad (or at risk of law enforcement action).

And for another lot of poeple, "legal" is nearly useless--let's say for someone in a mountainous area of the EU that must haul heavy cargo (or a bunch of kids) up long hills--a teeny 200-250W motor wouldn't be good enough by a longshot. (even here in flat Phoenix, the stuff I ahve to haul sometimes would be impractical to do with only that power--fortunately we have no power limit here, only speed limit).

Additionally, "legal" power is different in different places, so the only way to make a "compliant" image set is to only show the very lowest power and speed that's allowed anywhere that still allows ebikes at all.

If the only bikes we ever displayed were the lowest power and speed that was legal "everywhere", I doubt very many people would want to come into ES based solely on those. ;) Those they can buy pre-built from a number of places (even though lots of them are junk).

I prefer to stick with the legal speed limits (because I can't afford the tickets that would come from exceeding them should they choose to enforce them with me), but I have to say that even if they did institute a power limit here, I probably wouldn't be compliant with it unless they were literally stopping every ebike and testing it, since most likely it would be less than 750W, and what fun is that? ;)

My opinion on the speedy bikes is mostly that it's up to the individual to decide if it's worth the risk to life, limb, and liberty to build and ride such a thing. Best we can do is point them to all the "I'm a noob and I wanna go 50MPH" threads, and let them see how much it's gonna cost to do it, and let them decide. :/

We come from all walks of Life: Different backgrounds in education, upbringing, social circles, professional affiliations, economic worth, and for all of that – varying application needs and desires that are constrained by those parameters.

As such, this Forum is a direct reflection of diversity in application. Let people what they want to be! Presenting a sample of pictures from across the spectrum… great idea. I imagine the bulk of application fits neatly into kit form. However I’d wager that the top 100-200 posters on this forum are closer to the creative edge pushing the envelope of several boundaries, not the least of which is legality.

Many of us actually do want to go faster, but the gray area of the Law combined with whatever conservative influences that severely handicap application of electric motors to bikes across the globe needs to be addressed. Laws are designed to represent the masses. Mass communication can affect laws, and does, and has been for quite some time. Through social networks – such as ES, we can enlighten ourselves... and collectively (over time) affect our representation and our government.

I believe that’s one understated noble goal here: To change our world, allow for greater opportunity, create a larger market, and a safer one.

I, for one – am completely illegal with my design, not because I go insanely fast (I can, and have gone very fast uphill when compared to a bicycle), but because I operate my EV at 3-4X past the legal limit for horsepower. I get a kick out of it. We shouldn’t be labeled as bad, and we shouldn’t be constrained by a big wide bar that differentiates bicycles from motorcycles, legally or otherwise. We’re just people trying to get on down the road to make a living. How we get there is our business; as long as we do it safely – who should care?

On the flipside, I’ve done nearly everything I could think of to create high visibility for myself and my ride and just waiting for an opportunity to make it legal - just in case that day arrives by whatever fortune: Scout Motto - Be Prepared.

In the process of developing faster machines, we improve and harden our equipment, affect manufacturing – overtly or clandestinely to support this growing market. I wouldn’t want to constrain that development.

So the short answer on how to represent the focus of the movement is perhaps to have two sections: Typical & Edge-Case Applications then leave it at that. It would be interesting to measure the clicks using analytics.

From the bottom of the hill... <nod, flip visor> see you at the top, KF 8)

Hey there, not too to late at all. In fact, we only got through about half the site upgrades that were being planned, so the next round of work will be happening in the last week of November to do the rest of them including a new homepage cover. That's a great picture, a great build, and an inspiring story Naeem, and we'll be super thrilled to include it!

LFP, you need a still of the "and you know this bike is dangerous" video with the bike being ridden by that guy at the top of that hill, with the shoe still in the air. ;)

To save time digging, here's some pics of various versions of my bikes. Of course, you can use any other pics of them you have or can find, too (or instead).

Every image has previously been posted on ES before and I have them nicely organized now. If you see something you like, please let me know. I can dial in the size and resolution to suit.

Cheers and all the best, KF

Not electric. Gas, loud, 17 MPH with no pedaling. Rocket bike is no more. Converted to a leaf blower. Bad news - Yesterday the leaf blower was knocked off a roof. Craigslist roofer :( Yes leaf blowers make a good roof cleaning tool. Good news - Ordered a few plastic parts and soon leaf blower will be blowing again.
