ezip motor style bike kit

Bob,
Ok If I understand you right. You are puting a fixed sprocket onto the right side of the hub conected to yhe crank and the freewheel will be motor driven. . Excuse my ignorance but wouldn't that make the crank turn anytime the wheel turned. Since I haven't come up with a solution for the dual freewhel we were trying for, I am just going to add the 27T adapter and like you pedal alot. Nice thing about a trike though is I have a bar to put my feet up on when cruising down the rail trail. I was going to put it on the left side, but I want to be able to use the hubs gearing, so RSD it is. As much as I was dual freewheels that the cyclone offers, I can't see spending over $400 for a little hassle. Let us know how yours turns out. I am waiting till after X-Mas to get the needed parts and seeing your progress will help.

JD, Your hardly ignorant....however, you missed the point that I made that using the fixed sprocket for the crank the crank chain will run anytime the the wheel turns. But it's only the chain not the crank provided you have or install a freewheel on your crank. This is the only way it can be done. One other thing you need to remember, the fixed sprocket is on the inside closest to the hub. Normally the motor uses the inside sprocket. So keep this in mind. The 27t sprocket also requires you to use chain for a single speed. I think it's clasified as a 1/8" (wide) chain. The 9t gear on the motor will work fine with it. Please don't try this setup without a freewheel on your crank. It will beat your ankles to death.

I have 2 Cyclone motors with the freewheels on them and the freewheels are great but I'm not crazy about the controler being built into the motor. The controller craps out and you toss the motor with it. Not a smart design at all. Bob

How do you put a freewheel on a crank? After I reread your post I understood. I wrote before I read SORRY. Its kinda funny, I spent 6years in the AF as a crew chief on HH-53 Pavelow Helicopters, but these E-Drive Bikes got me by the B$&!s. But by asking alot of farout questions and LOTS OF READING, I am getting the grasp of it.
Other than the 1020 or in other words the Currie motor, what other geared DC motors would fit the bill. Mind you I am not wanting to go the RC route. Also I pretty much have my mind set on the 1020, just trying to decide between the 24v or the 36v. What would you choose? What the advantage and/or disadvantage of the 36v? Again, NEWBIE HERE so in plain english please.

I don't think you have ever said how far you plan on riding this bike or how fast you want to ride it. Keep in mind that a tric is more of a load for the motor. The 1018 motor is a good starter because it's simple and cheap but it makes noise. What kind of batteries are you thinking about? If you go lifepo4 (and you should) they will cost more then your motor setup. Consider this, setting up a 1018 motor, controler, throttle, brake disconnects and all the freewheels you need it will cost you about $250. Now you buy a set of lifepo4 batteries and charge (24v 20ah) for another $400 to $600. Your costs are now at least $600 to $850 and you still have to mount it all on your bike which will cost something so lets say $50. By the time you are done you can kiss 1,000 bucks goodbye. So you could consider the Cyclone drive kit. Remember it comes with a crank freewheel and motor freewheel and you don't have to figure out how to wire everything up ether because it's all plug and play. The only thing I don't like about my Cyclone is the controler is built into the motor which has some drawbacks but you won't have a problem with it. Your cost will go up but only about 15% of your total.

The higher the voltage the more battery you need. 36v cost 50% more then 24v and if you just buy a 1018 36v you have gained nothing. Keep in mind you also have to carry those batteries somewhere too. A set of 24v 20ah lifepo4s are about 15lbs. Whereas, a set of SLAs are 26lbs and can travel only 1/3 the distance. And the 36v packs are 50% more. Wanna shoot for 48v? I've carried 2 24v 20ah SLA packs on my old bike and I can tell ya the best thing i did is go lifepo.......

So now lets hear from everyone else.

Dumbass,
Yeah I realize the weight issues with a trike. Believe it or not, it weighs in at 27lbs. That is the the reason why I will be getting atleast a 450watt motor. Here is a break down of the items and costs that I will need. If I am forgetting anything, please let me know.
Motor: Haven't decided which 450w or 600w $68-$90
27t & Freewheel adapter $35
Throttle $12
Motor Controller $28
Battery 36v 15-20ah, ebay average cost $300
So the total I come up with is $443-$465
I only have front brakes, so I don't have to mess with my brakes.

I got a quote from paco at cyclone for a 650watt, controller, throttle & 2 freewheel for $400. So if you add the battery I come up with $700. So unless I am missing something that costs abutt load, the DIY road is still the route I am going to take. The main problem that I see with Cyclone is the shipping costs. $127 of the $400 is shipping. I know that the setup has some weight to it, but I know people who have shipped TV's for less.

Most of my riding is done on Rail Trails, but getting there and back home I have to climb a couple of hills. I also have a trailer that I use quit a bit to get my dog down to the trail. I don't like to hook her up to the running harness til we get there. Her running full speed down a busy city street would not be fun.

JD, Just 3 things I notice. 1) in your first setup (currie motor) your still not putting in a freewheel on your crank sprocket and that is a major mistake and it will get you hurt ans 2) a 36v 15/20ah battery, charger and BMS for $300 shipped is not much of a battery. I know Ebay has a lot of low cost batts but you may find your self getting what your paying for and 3) you forgot the new brake handles with motor cutoffs. Their only 20 bucks a set so don't leave them out. Be sure the controller has the ability to use them too. You will need to figure in for the mounting and wiring also but that's not that much.

As for the Cyclone motor they are a lot better quality motor but as we both know more money but your also getting a lot more parts with it too. As for the shipping it sounds like your getting dieect from TW. Are you? I looked at the cost for a 500w from the USA and he wants $495 plus shipping.

I forgot about the freewheel. The brake cutoff I never thought of. As far as Cyclone, I have read alot of posts saying DON"T GET THE INTERNAL CONTROL. The 650watt is the first one that has an external. The quote I got was for everything including shipping & mount. SO I guess after I think about it $400 for everything shipped is not bad. Talking with my Father, he said I should save longer, can't ride til march anyways, and get the 65o watt cyclone. Guess I will take some sound advice. Also the cyclone will allow me to use a split chain dual freewheel setup. That is what I wanted to do originally. It's amazing how you getan idea, Tinker with it and unsually you end up back at the beginning. Still would like to see someone figure out thcurrie motor for 20" tire tadpole trike. So I will be lurking and watching your build. When I get my setup I will post the split chain setup.

The fact that i have both Cyclone and Currie motors I can say without question the Cyclone is the better motor. To start with it's 95% eff. whereas, the Currie is only 84% eff. And the Cyclone motors are all brushless motors. The added power from the 450w to 650 will also be a big boost. But if i remember correctly that motor can run on 24v and 36v. You will have to decide which way you want to go on that. I saw the cool setup on the Cyclone site of the tric. Are you still planning to mount the motor behind the seat like they did ion the Cyclone site? Be sure when you order you are getting everything you think your getting from then. Don't waste money buying their batteries though. To expensive and the shipping will kill ya again.

Yeah, the motor will be right behind my seat. They have a kit specifically for trikes and split chain. I don't need a crank and all that. Just the motor, motor mount, 1cw, 1ccw freewheel, controller, throttle will be bought from cyclone. the battery will either be built, I have done one before, or bought. Got more than half saved, and X-Mas season is when I make more money, I am a Bartender. So hopefully by January I will have my setup. Might as well get what I want the first time around and love it, than buy something I will regret.

ES member Docnjoj took the swingarm off a cx450 and attached it to his tadpole.

He even used JB weld to put a left-side freewheel onto a Sturmey 3-speed hub.

I should have clarified a little. I would like to see someone be able to use the currie motor on a trike and still be able to use the gears. I know some folks say you don't have to gear an electric motor, but I am. The trike shown has a left side drive. Which is one of the ways I was concidering, but no gears. Like I discussed in previous posts, I want a split chain setup. That way I can use my NuVinci's gears. I am going to listen to the advice given here and save a little longer and get the 650 Cyclone. May take me longer, but I won't spend more time fixin than ridin. Thanks for the pic though.
