I saw a Bell seat that look like that at Walmart. Just some type of elastomers. The bell seat had two gel looking pads on the butt side as well.

I've never seen 'michelin man' style elastomers b4, but then I'm not any expert.
I wonder if there's some benefit to the ridges or if it's just cosmetic.

I believe the ridges offer progressive resistance (of the non-futile kind).

The high end of the new Schwinn line of electrics also uses the direct drive system.

They aren't in the market yet, but I'm looking forward to reviews on them.
