Hello everyone! Just did a search to see if anyone has bought one of these yet. The new Golden Motor Smart-Pie looks smaller and claims to have regenerative braking, built in cooling fan?, be brushless and gearless and also have a built in controller. Sounds interesting but too good to be true. I don't know how long this has been out but have any of you seen this or bought one?

Wonder how they will go for peak loading with an external controller versus a MP2? Seems smaller, not sure how much heat a small internal fan can dump....

"No easy broken plastic gears inside"
is not advantage LOL.

4.6kg its like same directdrive mini-hubs from conhismotor.com

This type of motors have less efficienct than DD. Big heat value, so of course cooler needed.
No thanks, goldenmotor, geared minihub is better.

Yeah, if they are quoting 200-400W range for these on their website, and they are quoting 200-1000W for the MPII on their same site, I guess this one is designed for low power and smaller size than the pie....

Sounds too good to be true. I can't even imagine that internal fan lasting more than a year of real riding. Any early adopters buy one yet? I'd be curious to hear some real world test stats.

I have ordered one of these and expecting it to arrive next week. I didn't do the amount of research I should have done before I ordered this though, so I'm hoping I bought something useful. It was only some days after placing the order and paying that I learn that a geared hub would be more suitable for my needs... My main objective for having a motor on my bike is for effortless hill climbing. I will give you some info on it when it arrives, but I don't have anything to compare it with.

They look great, but it is just look can be deceiving.
Just to give comparison point you must have such comparison .
TF and Eplus USA-designed motors have both internal controllers.
They do not need any internal fans and have true 1000W capability.
You are right, those fans will not last long.
The last time I read about MPie itwas about overheating.
You cannot overheat TF or Eplus - it is called thermal protection.
And if MPie can be overvolted - that is bad design.
BTW do not see point of paying for motor with internal controller and buying external one. No sense to me.

i got my smart pie for my wife. of course i had to put it on bike first to give it a spin. 48v 10ah battery it did 24mph on flat ground which surprised me. going up hills it looses some power and pedal assist was not necessary however i use it because i like to keep up my speed. nice thing is the 15 lbs weight difference between it and the magic pie 3 which i also have. so far i am really impressed with the motor. i plan on putting on a ladies bike for my wife with a 36v 12ah battery and will let you know how it does with that. first i have to do some more playing.

I'm getting a 36V battery too so I'd love to hear how much difference it is between 36 and 48v on this kit. Also, how's the noise and wheel resistance? I guess I'll find out in a few days anyway, but I'm anxious to know.

i will probably get it going wed with the 36v battery and let you know. i am working a lot of overtime. few things i have noticed different on positive side besides the weight is it freewheels real easy. spin tire with hand and it keeps spinning unlike my bigger motor that goes a few rotations and stops. also it handles much better specially in the woods however most of my riding is on the roads. as i said i am very happy with the motor.

Did you own any other ebike to compare or it is your first ebike
That is important that you have comparison to other hub ebike
Some people get excited about Walmart ebike some look at Walmart ebike as crap
Everyhing is in comparing

i have had 2 others. right now i also have a magic pie on trek 3500. i put the smart pie on the trek so i could get a good idea on the difference of the 2. i live on a caribbean island and a lot of hills. no such thing as flat land except for really short distances. i ride the bicycle daily thru the hills from my home on the north shore to the airport on the south shore. my first ebike was junk. then i had a few 2 stroke and a few 4 stroke gas bikes. still new to electric put have a lot of miles on the magic pie. motorized bicycles i have been riding for quite a while now.

So you compare old MPie with new MPie
No comparing with other brands
Tell me those 24mph that on flat with zero wind tires 26 pumped to ?
It is important that you specify that under what conditions that speed?

wind is never calm here and i have about a half mile stretch of flat ground. i got the same speed in both directions with the smart pie
tires 60lbs 26x1.95 street tires
me i weigh about 220lbs
roads are not smooth like stateside roads however not as bad as dirt roads. just got to miss the knee deep pot holes.
i have ridden a few other ebikes before i moved to the island. people i knew that had them had a lot of problems with them. i am not going to mention brands or anything else because not fair to manufactures. friends are rough on things and could have been because of that. their bikes would lift the front tire off the ground on take off and powerful. my other pie is a magic pie three so not really an old model. i am not a young pup anymore. i wanted something to ride around the island and to just enjoy our 12 months of summer. i do not like maintenance problems which my gas bikes were just that, i had to work on them constantly. also i own a condo right on the ocean and rust is a problem. the e-bike i can carry up the stairs and keep in the condo which was not an option with a gas bike. the pie i have not done a thing to except ride it and charge it and that is what i was looking for.

Thank you for answers.
Is MagicPie completely silent? Also on acceleration?
Or does it have this annoying whine like other China brands?

its as quite as any other electric bicycle i have seen and and quiter then any i have ridden. the smart pie is a little more quite then the magic pie. the magic pie has great acceleration however it does not lift the front wheel off the ground on take off which is fine by me. the smart pie does not have near the acceleration the magic pie does. the magic pie you can start with no pedaling no problem the smart pie just dosn't feel right without pedaling when at dead stop. both motors i usually pedal when starting. i think if someone wants a kit that is plug and play the pies fit that bill. the wires are all numbered and you just plug them in. pretty much a no brainier. no soldering whatsoever and only takes minutes to set up. most of the time is spent setting up bicycle itself (brakes accessories ect). i keep reading how people don't trust the internal controller because of heat. temps here are low 90's every day and around 78 at night. some of the mountains or hills between here and work are long winding climbs and pretty steep some areas. i have gone up them using motor only and felt the pie and also the housing the controller are in and they are warm but never hot to the touch. as i said i have done no maintenance except fixing a few flats and adjusting the brakes. roads really suck here and rough on a bicycle. i have had more flats with my cars and bikes in 4 years then i have had in my lifetime. the regan breaking works great. hardly ever actually engage the real breaks except when i need to stop. not sure how much they actually charge battery and not concerned. i like the motor helping me brake because them long hills i climb i also go down, they are windy and you have to use brakes.
difference speeds on same bike. (only takes a minute to switch out wheels)
smart pie 24 mph flat - magic pie 28mph
climbing a long hill the smart pie needs pedaling. however their is basically no resistance you are just helping the motor. done in high gear
magic pie. it will stay above 17mph however i usually pedal and keep it around 21mph in the steep areas. not so steep it stays above 20 mph anyway.

it all boils down to they are fun. its about a 25 minute ride to work on the bicycle so i have stereo speakers on it and listen to music while riding. fresh air feels good and you can enjoy the sites and smells of this tropical island. my car i use very seldom.

from my readings about MagicPie
it is not completely silent but have annoying whine.
therm "electric bicycle" you write about is VERY wide,
they ARE hub drive ebikes which are completely silent you just did not come across one and never tried one.
Is like driving LADA, SCODA or any other substandard car and never having the chance to drive BMW or MERCEDES.
The same thing.
My both hub ebikes are completely silent,
when you ride them next to the wall what do you hear???
For virtue of ebike is silence of operation for me.

I'd like the silence of the Tidalforce together with the small size of a geared minimotor. I hope the smartpie is a good enough compromise. Small and not too noisy. I just hope it climbs hills as good as you say. Norway is not a flat country.

micro not sure why you are trying to bust my chops or trying discredit me or my bike. yes you may have a better set up then i do but who cares. someone on here was asking about the pie and i tried to answer their questions the best i could because i do own one and can answer honestly not just hearsay. anyway when i ride the bike i do not hear the motor. tires going over the pavement and sounds like that yes. i have people say to me every day "i do not hear a motor". as i said the sound from the motor is next to nothing. i have read about fans and every other kind of motor out their that are so called silent. as far as i am concerned their is no such thing. magnets and stuff are going to have a sound when spinning. you may have to get real close and listen for it but it is their a sound. top end cars are famous for how quit they are but i have been in rolls royce. owned a Mercedes and a bmw and yes they were quit but you could hear them. i wanted a nice electric motor that i could put on my bike and ride around the island that was maintenance free and so far the pie has met and exceeded my expectations. we do not have winters and 90% of our rain comes at night. even when we have a hurricane the next day is beautiful out. we do not have periods of winter and things like that where we can do a tear down of our bicycles and work on them. i wanted something i can keep on the road all the time and i have been able to do that. so i am very happy with my pie and didnt think twice when i got another one for my wife.

lollandster. pedal assisting a electric motor is hard to explain. its not like pedaling a bicycle. its almost like pedaling downhill for more speed on a regular bicycle. its hard to explain but i had the same thoughts when i read you may have to pedal up hills. you do it in your bicycles highest gear and bassically just taking some relief of the motor which allows it to go faster up the hills. not sure that makes sense but it is pretty amazing. i think you will be very happy. i attached a picture and as you can see lots of mountains. the bike has the magic pie on it in this picture. smart pie is way smaller and 15 lbs lighter, i used this picture to give you an idea of the islands landscape

Please don't post any more pictures of your rides and surroudings. I'll have to kill myself from jeolousy!

Nice bike, by the way, and agree with your sentiments about having to pedal once in a while. Too many people seem to confuse bicyles with motorcycles, however powered.

That's good that it works for you
One less ICE on the planet
Not everyone needs what I need
Fine technology and design cost money
Everybody might react differently to whine noise
I just wanted to point out that there are USA design drives out there
Especially that you are on USA soil?

i shopped and i wrote some of the the companies in the states asking questions. most never returned my email and one even sent me an invoice without answering my questions. another one would not ship here which is a problem with a lot of things. at least the company i purchased from took the time to answer my questions and would ship here. i buy usa made every chance i get but on the same token if they can not take the time to email me back and answer a few questions or take something to the us post office to ship here (fedx and ups cost a fortune to use when shipping here) i will take my hard earned money and spend it elsewhere. as far as US soil we cannot vote for the president and islands may be owned by the states but they have our own govt and more like a 3rd world country but at least we have a few things available to us like the us postal service. i moved here from michigan almost 5 years and its a heck of a change. things we took for granted like being able to run to the hardware store and pick up an anderson plug or most anything else is not an option. first we have to find someone selling them and second get them to ship here. most all on amazon will not ship here and about half on ebay will not either. not knocking the island it is a different life for sure and i love it. this picture is riding around in january. it makes the hassles of island life more then worth it

One misconception I would like to clear up is the "built in fan"

There is no fan inside the motor. Please take a look at this picture of my back wheel. The Smart pies and Magic Pie 3 both use the same controller. You can see the back of the controller through the slots in the cover. This part of the controller is the actual heat sink. If you notice there is a silver screw you can see through one of the slots. This screw is one of six that hold the controller to the wheel. As the motor turns the controller is stationary and this screw will always be in the same place. The slotted cover spins with the motor and this is what GM China calls "Built in fan". Is this a fan? I suppose. One thing for sure, it is certainly an improvement over previous Internal controllers for dissipating the heat.

I haven't tried one yet, but I'm missing the smaller size and extreme quiet of the older Crystalyte 400 series of motors. The Smart Pie might be a similar experience to those, excellent for those who like a quiet pedalling experience with good assist at speed.
