It's odd to me to see all traffic moving that slow. Around here (suburban), a 30mph speed limit means 45. I guess because it's urban there, speeds are more in that 25-30 range for cars. I got this one hill that has a stop sign at the bottom, and I'm going 35mph, only 200 feet from the stop sign, yet I still get cars pulling up next to me because they're going 45-50. lol, it's like "WTF are you doing?"

yes, that's definitely a key part of the deal. i never had any intention of speeding around in traffic. my original objective was to get up the hills without sweating in work clothes, and occasionally haul kids. and most of the time that was on the sidewalk. but once THAT got dangerous, i took to the streets and realized it'd be much safer for me to go the speed of traffic than 5-10mph slower... and even safer to go 5-10mph faster...

i would not be happy riding on the streets where the traffic was 45+...

More or less. I think it was more of a mutual decision... haha. I never went through there full speed - Always felt I had to go slow.... I still cross there if I'm heading up Pennsylvania Ave. The whole area is crawling with cops anyway, and I think a bike cop started blowing a whistle after me. It could have been a hotel guy calling for a cab. But you know how cops are. I think they're getting my scent. I saw that look, you know, like 'wtf? you're not passing me like that. you're meat next time. we'll be waiting'...

Anyway, now that you're all more or less familiar with my route, this ought to be fun:

decided to take the good tread tire from the front to replace the back. seemed like a good idea at the time, but then i thought it was dumb. anyway, look what i found when i got the front tire off... musta gone through some mud with low pressure and mashed it up in there... never any probs w/ this getting flat though...

as for the rear rim liner, i decided on knoxie's approach, and since i cut such a big piece at first, decided it'd be best to overlap it. and a staple facing down on the inside couldn't hurt too much...

unfortunately, the tire was such a pain to put on that i moved the liner aside in a couple spots...


tire pressure is up at 60psi all around and it's a pretty stiff ride. shot some unusable footage this am because it was pointed too low, and i'd set it to full HD, the wide, and if it's too low or too high, it looks terrible. stay tuned. hopefully i'll have some true HD vids to come.

found a bunch of recent commutes vids and yanked out the highlights so I can delete the rest!

first two minutes: inbound and outbound commute, rear facing. couple shots of dark rainy commute. 2:40-4:00 lousy helmet mounted footage. 4:00 has some scenes from a lunchtime run to costco in virginia, near national airport. (camera was bouncing around more than usual, because of stiff tires? shame cause there woulda been good footage.. i ran image stabilization on the footage after and it further shrunk the field of view!)

haha, thanks chroot! very tempting indeed! I've been thinking that i'd LOVE a clyte (after following up on icecube), but $375 is nothing to sneeze at... and i'm gonna need another lipo pack before too long... if the price were lower, i'd jump on it.

man, the trial and error never ends: for inbound commute here, the camera mount was too long, too many elbows and it bounced too much. i'd forgotten how i'd attached it before. figured it out on the outbound, starting at 1:30. original is 1080 but youtube only showing up to 720...

thought i'd go for a lunchtime ride. shoulda previewed it w/ google street view first. was pretty boring! got stuck up in the train tracks though. made it back just before the lipo pack headed over the cliff! 64V

i've definitely been having fun with the gopro, and video editing. it's a great action cam, and who does more action than kids?

i mounted the gopro on my son's helmet, video to come. other vids in the works too...

here's a video i just made for the neighbor, a 12 year old girl who's been helping us with the kids a lot lately. she spends half the day on a rope swing in front of our house.

the last couple days, i've been hearing/feeling a slight shuddering during regen. not sure what it was... had a feeling it was the controller.

this afternoon, on race to pick up the kids, i got the shuddering intermittently on acceleration. stopped twice to check connections. found i was able to continue at a steady speed, but after slowing down, i couldn't accelerate again. even rolling the wheel caused jerky resistance. a burnt hall in the motor?

i stopped for more diagnostic before parking and locking the bike and taking a cab.

on the cab ride, i noticed burn marks on my pantleg where the controller leaned against me.

ah the magic smoke?


more details after i retrieve the bike later tonight...

More than likely you've blown a fet(s) in the controller.
If you've cooked it well enough to get black on the outside of the controller though you might be up for a whole new controller rather than just swapping out the blown fets. You won't know until you open it.

I take it you left the bike chained up somewhere randomly ? Did you take your battery with you ?

i kept wondering if it was a cap for some reason, but now that you mention it, a fet makes more sense. i kept thinking i should check it out before it got worse. but when would i find the time...
after dinner i'll go rescue it, hopefully all of it, the unlocked front wheel, the beam rack, etc, etc. the battery is locked to the frame. fingers crossed... it's in front of a cafe.

Sorry to hear you may have cooked your controller! been there done that more than once! but always managed to repair them myself, swapping out fets aint so hard and you can even put new surface mount components on with a bit of patience, I have fixed many controllers, I almost always ended up putting all new fets in there and using real not fake ones of normally a higher voltage rating as well which helps.

Hope the rest of the bike is there when you come back to pick it up, although my batteries on the topeak isnt the ideal place from a handling point of view, it sure is handy if you need to leave the bike outside as I do on a daily basis for work.

Keep us posted! and dont be afraid to have a go at fixing it yourself!

hyena wins the prize for diagnostic! i've got some 4110's i've been sitting on, but it'd be a darn shame to hook those up and find out something else was fried on this. any suggestions of things to test to see if it's worth working on?

in the meantime, i'm going to test out the old 846 controller.

That's faaaaaairly crispy. Good work! :lol:
Clean it up and see if there's any damage to any of the little surface mount components. If there is I'd just bin it and get a new one from Lyen. By the time you replace half a dozen 4110s and the time you spend doing it you may as well just get a new one and know nothing else is damaged.
The last time I blew a controller (much less spectacularly than that) it lifted a section of the board around the blown fet so the SMDs were gonners.

got nicobie's old infineon 72v 45a 846 mcu running! quick test and no regen. can't remember how i'd programmed it. decent pickup though! and just plain psyched i had a backup controller, and that i didn't have to swap out the 9x7 with the 6x10! :lol:

i'll clean up the old controller and take some macro pics. the eyes aren't what they used to be!

i removed the heat sink btw, to better see the fet legs and half of them were gone!

i'd definitely replace them w/ the 4110's if i had reasonable confidence it'll work. micro soldering tiny resistors is not my thing though.

it's just funny, i've had a feeling this was going to happen, and that i'd place my first call to mr. lyen... :wink:

If you decide against repairing it, I'd be interested in the corpse, if it's cheap enough. Even if I can't fix it, I can use parts off of it to fix others, like whichever one of mine I blow up next.

Glad you are back and running!

It is very likely the gate resistors have also blown as well and maybe even the driver as well, I used to change them and the fet drivers it time consuming though, but that was when I was a single man with no kids, now I have a partner and a kid so maybe I would just call up Lyen as well :lol:
