Hi everybody, I'm very happy to be in this forums.

I'm building a Halbach Array Motor/Generator prototype. As a motor it would be DC 24-48 V; as a generator I have no idea how much power I can get out of it.

For some pictures please see my album:

This is a plywood prototype and to say the truth, I'm facing some real problems with this model. As soon as I get it working I would make it all aluminum.

Please advice me about what kind of controller would be good for running this motor.

The rotor has 12 permanent magnets arranged in 4 poles, and the stator has nine coils connected in three groups of three coils.

I thank you for any help or advice you may provide, and please do not hesitate to make any questions you may have about this project.

Good luck and kind regards.

Welcome to ES!
Sorry only questions for now.
What will you use it for?
Why Hallbach array?
What is stator made of? Looks like SS bolts held in aluminum centerpiece and winded with magnet wire.
Your winding diagram is also looking for trouble or is it for some very weak aplication?

Hi Mel
Welcome to ES! :)

From the images, I think that your HB Array will not be very effective because the sides of the magnets need to touch or be very close to have benefit, and from what I can see only the corners of the magnets will touch.

However – I am glad for your pioneering spirit and can’t wait to hear about what you have learned.
To your success, KF

Does anybody recognise the winding scheme? I've never seen adjacent phases in series like that, maybe someone else has?

Imagining vibration at higher power level. :D Good as ex centric sander alternative.
Lol  would it even do that? would it turn in a circle even?

How about the fact that there's 12 (or 4) earth magnet poles and 9 (or is it 3? or one?) electromagnetic poles? I don't understand the motor.

I am following this topic because I was involved with it on another forum (http://forum.allaboutcircuits.com/showthread.php?t=62670). I am intrigued by the motor, however I think it is flawed. I would like to help out with the controller recommendation he is after, but I really have no idea how the motor is supposed to work, or how big the controller needs to be. He's said that its future is to be a ebike hub motor.

Oh, right. I just looked closer and lost every track to understand its principles.
