A small point but this is where the confusion is coming from.
The word transformer can mean a number of things, but generally connotates being used for AC to AC voltage level shifting & made out of copper wound around an iron core.
The word convertor also can be used a number of ways but generally implies DC & built around silicon components.
So they're called DC/DC convertors & not transformers just to make that subtle distinction.
To run a transformer you would in fact need to generate DC to AC with an inverter.
This is the method I want to use, once I figure out how to rewire one of the cheapie made in China inverters to run off 36 volt input instead of 12V.
Then you have all kinds of choice available to you, not just in light bulbs but any 110V accessory you wish.

My latest thoughts on lights for my Electric Bike Project # 2 is RED truck light on rear. [Change 12V bulbs to 48V] Ordered 2 - [200 Lumens CREE LED XR-E P4 Bike Bicycle Light B200] from Ebay for the front. Not sure how I will reduce voltage? Will ask my Electric Wizard after I receive LED lights. Resistor? Also might have some LED Panel Mount Indicators on the sides of bicycle?
Curious to all your thoughts on steady on rear lights like the RED parking lights on a truck compared to the flashing RED lights on the rear of bicycle?
Whats better for rear of bicycle? Flashing of always on? Does flashing cause drivers to become hypnotized and drive into bicycle. I am becoming hypnotized by the animated GIFs I found.
One more idea? Flashing sirens and lights on front so I can pull cars over like a cop when I get angry at them for driving stupid and almost hitting me.
I run 2 x (4 Large LED's) Lights (with a gattling gun mode) to be seen & 2x 15w Halogens to see the road - burn time about an hour .
With 2x 5 LED's rear flashing lights. In my experience flashing lights let drivers know there is bicycle a head & non-flashing modes drains the batteries to much without giving the driver any extra information - as generally all vechicles have solid rear lights. Wether flashing lights hypotize the average driver? - I do not know. Makes no difference to me when I'm driving - but then again may be I'm not like the average driver - who behaves like a moth, between changing CD's, talking on the mobile - whilst as an afterthought tries to keep the pesky car on the road.
