Help picking controller

I'm familiar with Ebikes but this is my first time assembling one that didn't come as a complete kit. I'm very lost on what controller to get and was looking for advice. I have a 72v 3000w QS motor that I purchased used locally. I also ordered 72V 11.6Ah BMS:30Amp continuous 90±10Amp maximum battery. I know that the controller is super important so I want to make sure I don't order the wrong thing. I'm on a fairly tight budget and was hoping to not spend more that $350 on the controller, display, and throttle.

I was considering these two options, but before ordering I wanted to make sure I wasn't making a poor choice. Any advice would be REALLY appreciated.

Would need to know your project specifics and intended usage.

How much load will be on it? Meaning, how much current will the controller have to supply, for how long?

What features do you need the controller to have? Such as...regen braking, and if so, just on/off or proportional, and do you want it controlled by a separate input or just by the throttle; do you need FOC; do you need a display, and if so what information must it show, etc etc etc. Does it need to be programmable, and if so to what extent? Or do you need it to be just plug-and-play?

Do you have a size / volume limit? Weight?

Budget?

The more details you provide, the better we will be able to help you make your project a success. ;)

The motor is going on a moped and will just be used for short trips around town. Speed and torque are important to me and I don't want to be holding up traffic at redlights. I don't need regen braking nor have a need for a seperate input. Will just have it controlled by a twist throttle. I don't know a lot about FOC or the pros or cons. I would like a display, mostly for the speedometer, odometer, watts, etc. I don't have a size or weight limit. Smaller is preffered but not important. Programable is also not important. My budget is around $350 including the display. Plug and play also isn't essential.

Mostly just concerned about accidently buying a controller that isn't compatible with my motor and or battery.
 
To play it safe? Get a controller that can tolerate 84V or more, and has a maximum current of not more than 30A.
 
Thank you, for clarifying. Makes sense. I'm having trouble finding a 72v 30A controller. The lowest current option I can find seems to be 40A. Any suggestions on where I could find a 72v 30A controller?
 
That battery will be the weak point of your build, but should take >40 amps as long as you don't go over 30A for more than a few seconds at a time.
There are a load of controllers cheaper than what you found, that should work well.

You don't need a Cycle Analyst display to use this, but it's a direct plug in, and would really unlock the potential of your bike to have one. the addition of the CA would break your budget, though.

Next down, and shaving more than $100 off the cost would be this thing: www.ebikes.ca/SineWaveControllerInYourBudget Again, you don't need a Cycle Analyst display to use this, but it's a direct plug in and good to have. And this time it would all come in within your budget.

If you want to drop down in price and quality, but still get something that should work very well, then there are a load of sub-$100 72v 40A controllers out there. If your budget doesn't cover that now, it can be added later.
