hi. im new here as the title says and i want to introduce myself. i was always about the gas powered vehicles and the internal combustion engines. ive recently just found EV sites that really SPARKED my interest. so i decided to join this board wanting to learn more about EV's. i also take interest to the EV movement mainly because im an electrician apprentice and also i am going to major as an electrical engineer once i am in an actual university. i really like to see electricity be applied to vehicles whether for fun or work.
well enough with the boring jibber jabber. here is my EV that i am currently working on. its a razor knock-off that i put razor electronics on.
here is what i started with

then came the motor

tazorback.jpg

this setup had a 15a motor at 12v running 2 14.4v NI-MH battery packs in parallel, no speed controller. i wasnt satisfied with it so more frankensteining commenced

so that is pretty much the finished project. its the stock razor motor controller batteries and the previous motor i was using. i know, its hacked together but works well. the 3-speed hub/jackshaft was a cool idea at the time but proved to be impractical in the fact that the gears are too wide and i didnt have enough power for it. this project was also a mistake in the sense that i built it on such a small platform. now i am in the process of putting everything on a bike instead so i have a bigger platform to play with. thanks for your time and views

What kind of bike hub is that?
Does it have multiple gears?
Got brakes?

Now you just need an RC motor and some Lipo batteries

Welcome to the forum def215 ...you now realise you have the EV 'bug' all your spare time
and cash will be spent on it don't you LoL.. Nice first effort, looks like it is a very "frugal"
setup, what are you planing for your bike build? Spec?

You mention your an apprentice sparky best of luck with that...judging by the pics, the cars
and buildings in the background of them, i'm guessing your an Aussie...I'll stick my
neck out and say Melbourne?

thanks guys. yes,it is a multiple gear hub. its a 3-speed schwinn 333 hub and it holds up fine to the power of the electric motor. that is one thing i need to address on this thing which are brakes. not having them caused me to almost get t-boned by a biker. yes, the ev bug got me and really got me interested in different alternatives of fuel or should i say power source on this one. im pretty sure ill be spending plenty of time on this board and on electric vehicles that i will be putting together. being an electricians apprentice is a decent job but im really interested in how everything really works so after i graduate college, ill be going to a university to study electrical engineering. good guess on my location aussiejester but im many miles away in the US, pennsylvania to be exact.
ill be breaking this whole project down soon though because it seems to impractical and too small of a platform so i want to put this all on a bike. i preferably would like a smaller frame to work with, maybe a 16 or 20 inch bike, because im a smaller guy, being only 5' 8" and 120 lbs and also for compactness and portability. it will be for mostly city riding so it will be a lot of flat land so having multiple speeds on the build ill be doing is not really necessary but would be a plus. as for the drive system and electrics, i want to use all of the razor electrics but i do want to ditch the heavy sla's, because they are most of the weight in all of the razor stuff.i want to use the jackshaft setup with multiple gears for the drive system but i kind of want to do a spindle drive setup because of its simplicity. i am on the edge about doing a chain drive jackshaft setup or spindle drive. ill take suggestions from anyone to push me in the direction of what drive system to go with.

DOH! I thought it might of been a one way street in a local City here i did notice the cars on the "wrong side" of the road (we drive on the left here in OZ) Seems alot like inner city here to me...Anywayz...

I wish you the best in your current job and your future studies, having a trade under your belt is a great start in your adult work life, something you have and can always fall back on if things don't work out at Uni in the future. People will always need sparkies to wire up new houses!

I'm biased towards multi gear non hub motor setups myself and would definitely persue this in yor next project, have a look at the rc motor builds, i think you might find the level of sophistication of interest and perhaps something you might like to get involved in...either way all the best.

i live on a smaller one way side street which is a good thing for testing my machines. yeah over here we drive on the right side but i would love to experience driving on the left. being an electrician is a great job and i thoroughly enjoy it with occasionally getting "blasted" every once in a while but im really more interested in how everything works. now to get back on topic, i wouldnt want to go with a hub motor because of the fact that you cant play with gear ratios. i just recently found out about the internally geared hubs and they just opened up a whole new world of customization to me. ill also look in to the rc motors because i would like to have a smaller setup on the scooter, because a 10 lbs scooter + extended rear with new wheel + motor + sla's + miscellaneous metal stuff like drivetrain and hardware = something that tips the scale for its size. this board has a lot of info which i can see, so im pretty sure im in the right place to find the information i need to build a decent ride. ill definitely update everyone on my projects and progress on the things im building. thanks

RC setups are definitely small size suit scooter applications well...dunno if i would be comfortable doing the speeds this fella is doing on a scooter though LoL

Thanks for all the info. I'll get this patented under my name straight away
Really though, looks great.
as long as i get a cut its all good...lol. thanks
i looked at the links that you posted up aussiejester and those scooters are pretty extreme, especially the first one. going 25mph on 100mm wheels is kinda scary to me. i would go with a milder setup because getting up to speed on a razor scooter makes me uncomfortable. i would shoot for a setup that goes around 15-20mph. but those links were very helpful. thanks. i see plenty more potential then i did before in my projects now.

neat idea using a geared hub as countershaft and good approach;wanting to kow how everything works. This should serve you well in life.As an alternative to the geared hub might you consider getting a blown motor from an ICE scooter and cutting away the crankcase so you can drive direct into it's transmission from your electric motor ?

i havent thought to do that at all. dont ev motorcycle builders do that so they can keep their trans? only thing is that it sounds pretty hard to do, unless theres a machine shop involved

I think FrankG did either id that or considered doing it and dismmissed or changed it due to the reduced efficiency
Chains pwn gears in terms of efficiency so if you can get away with not using the gearbox it would be better way to go IMO...Someone will correct me if im wrong no doubt LoL
