Here is my custom built HPM5000B Bike, my inspiration was the Jackyl.

The city of Phoenix has canals that spider web all over the city, keeps me off the roads

Custom Built dual suspension frame - steel
Sachs Moped wheels, with two sprockets, one for power, one for pedal.
#41 Chain
Golden Motor HPM5000B with controller, 120A CONT 200amp 1 min, 3000A 30 sec, Golden Motor USA, has been fantastic as well
48V 60Ah of GBS cells
Elite Power Solutions LCD BMS - COMPANY IS FANTASTIC (FULL SUPPORT) --balances during charge and discharge, complete with LVC, HVC, TEMP alarms, and will cutoff via brake) like a goodrum...

Backlit screen shows voltage of all 16 cells, and temps, current, and a percent remaining bar, of battery juice. The balancing boards on each cell are networked to the BMS and have the temp sensors in them...

Cut my own sprockets, Gussets, dropouts, shock mounts etc---I built a CNC plasma...

80 mile range and 55mph max

Batts good for 180A cont (8640W), 600amp peak, only pulls 170A max when floored momentarily ....pulls like a freight train....

Still need to add the pedals... Will add more pix soon....

Pix a bit out of order, here is me making some sprockets of different diameters, to get the sweet spot of accel, and top speed...I will go belt drive after I get the ratio perfect.

SICK (which means very freakin cool)!
-Mike

cool ride!
Would look even more badass with supermoto tires and huge disc brakes :)
You must have awesome acceleration and a good top speed for a moped-size bike?

def,
Can you imagine seeing that thing pop a wheelie towards city hall around lombard and broad? Or better amongst the bike messengers at rittenhouse?

Great build!

Google Cahe (wont last forever so I've copied and pasted, hope that isnt out of line):-

Endless has given to me, time to give back...

Pedal side sprocket is free wheeling...spokes are thicker than 12ga C-lyte spokes...

Bike without motor and batts is 65LBS

Motor is 23LBS, batts are 77 LBS

More pix....installing batts etc...
SANY1643.jpg

It's smaller than my 26in mountain bike..for size reference the rims are only 17"

The tires are bridgestone Gazelles, rated for 290LBS per tire, and 81mph.

I didn't want the motocross look, I wanted smooth, efficent, and low key. I'm running dual drum brakes..

I will be stretching some black lycra etc. over the whole center portion...after I get pedals on it...

Indian giver...

Sucks for me especially as I'm very curious about seeing this motor in a build and am very upset someone beat me to it. But I still have time because sorry bonzo, pics or it didn't happen dude. But if he ever decides to post up again I would love to see a video of the controller GM sells for this motor. So far all that's out there is that trike GM put out there.

Gestalt,

Oh it DID happen, and yes, I bet you to it :)

I waited FOREVER for you to do it first...

I didn't think anyone had any interest, so I removed my posts...sorry.

Pix back up in a few minutes :)

Pix are up

Awesome!! Thanks for posting those pics back up. I wouldn't want to pedal that thing home though!

How did you figure out your frame geometry and the rear suspension?

I grabbed the Jackyl pic from thunderstruck, brought it into CAD, scaled it to the known wheel diameter, and began taking measurements :)

Then I modified my frame to what I needed.

Yes, I over did it with the batts, but I wanted big power and LONG range.

Yes, I could have gone Lipo, but then I would not have gotten this killer BMS, and I didn't want to worry about puffy cells, babysitting the charging process, or burning my house down.

As far as working out the rear susp geometery, I just kind of winged it(is that a word?)...lol

Pic that I worked from....

I love the build, and what a slick BMS! Very cool bike! Great job!

-Luke

Thank you Luke, it was a total PITA, and took way longer than I thought.

The bike weighs 164 lbs.

I build CNC's quicker than this :)

(Kevin and I used to build CNC's together, he moved to Arkansas)

I assisted in designing your CNC :)

Great work and an outstanding build Bonzo.

Certainly didn't mean to offend with the invisible man comment.

It's just that reading about it and seeing no pics, ....
well, the suspense was killing me.

Cheers
Matt.

Bonzo,

I love it...function first and foremost. I'm working on some scratch builds myself, so I've got questions:

What are the forks and rear shock from?
How are the drum brakes working out...plenty of stopping power?
Have you been able to take it on any sustained climbs? If so, what kind of % grade? Motor heat?
Can we get a closeup of how you did the rear suspension pivot? Is it using rubber bushings, bearings, other?
Are you happy with the handling? Anything you would do differently next time?

It will be interesting to see how you pull off functional pedals, because with that width my concern would be pedal strike.

John

Nice build. I have a question. Why did you make such a steep rake angle on the head post ?? Going down much of a hill, you are getting that head post very close to an over center position, and might get a face plant on the road ???

I'm trying to take notes from several builds, to see if I can get close to a perfect build.
