Hubless (centerless) wheel

I guess it was the not wearing a helmet, and not doing the stupid stunt that got him killed.

YUP helmet would of saved him no doubt, i dont think i ever saw footage of Indian Larry wearing a helmet
seen him stand on the seat like in above pics several times, even on public roads. He was at a bike
show when he did this stunt for the last time, 1000's witnessed him fall to his death, was not
on a "public road" was closed off area where it happened & a gust of wind at the wrong time....

what is a 'stokemonkey'......?
thanks.......

the one thing I was thinking about using these types of wheel set-up.... is stability whilst on the bike..... instead of the gross weight being a foot off the ground, it could be 3-4 inches....

1. It matters not where the frame to bicycle interface with respect to the center of gravity of the bike. If you go hubless at the very bottom or hubless at the very top, the only difference is doing at at the top likely has a lower vehicle weight from not being a dummy and hooking at at the bottom, meaning longer heavier more flexy connection. However, if you're into performance, you wouldn't be going hubless in the first place.

2. The higher the COG for a given mass, the longer the pendulum time period, and hence the slower reaction time you the human can have to keep it balanced.

3. The lowest bearing surface speeds and bearing count, and hence lowest drag, lowest mass, cheapest, and highest strength to weight option will be simply using a hub. I do not believe it's possible even with an unlimited budget for custom ceramic bearing elements and races etc to make the best hubless wheel on earth simply match the strength to weight performance and drive efficiency of even the cheapest supermarket Huffy wheel.

That said, if it floats your boat to look at, and you don't mind if it weighs more and wastes more of your energy in heating bearings and is nearly impossible not to weigh more for systems of equal strength, go for it.

ES Bible "Search found 79 matches: +hubless"... and it's here again. "Hubless wheels emerge on recumbent trike":

Fresh off a trip from Chicago, I found myself driving to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to attend the presentations of various Mechanical Engineering projects. A compressed air engine, a new form of trailer jack, and an electric motorcycle were all on display, but what drew me there was the promise of seeing a recumbent trike with hubless wheels.

... and mentions Wiki " hubless wheels (originally invented by Franco Sbarro)" in 1989? ... while ignoring Sergio Faustino De Cast Iznaga's US patent from 1924.
