Hyena's e-bike builds (now with HD video)

LOL. I seem to remember an epic train race in the past...
Damn, I'd forgotten all about that! Good memory, that was nearly 3 years ago. The video is set private therefore it never happened :p I will say though that I was pedalling furiously the whole time and obeyed the rules of the road :p
I just noticed the date on that vid, that was the day before I was diagnosed with cancer... :(

Ducky, you win a free hyena electric bikes sticker :p

Not true, but I'll allow it on this occasion because it IS a pretty cool vid and it took me forever to make :p

In other news I've just set myself up as the Australian distributor of the Qulbix raptor frames. I'm still working on my own frame design and this will suit a fairly different demographic to the Raptors but for now these are one of the few choices for people who want to run big power, and in my opinion currently the best DIY option (which is why I'm using them).

Right at this point in time I'm offering frame only supply in Australia but will soon (inside of 2 months) offer them bundled with my new higher powered hadron kits and li-ion batteries. For higher power levels again I'll also be offering crown motors with these which previously had a pretty limited market as they didnt fit the majority of bike frames. With the wide 165mm swing arm on these you can retain maximum bicycle pedalability with a 7 sp freewheel. The cromotor gang are still limited to a single speed freewheel, but atleast it'll fit with no mods or headaches!

As an introductory offer if you get in quick on the first batch and because I'm such a good bloke :p I'm offering free shipping which is a saving of around $200. The exchange rate of the Aussie dollar against the euro puts these at $1500 - that's the total price, delivered.
Given there's no dealers in the US or elsewhere outside of europe I can probably extend the same offer to you guys if anyone is interested ?

More Hyena electric bikes updates soon including new kits, new batteries, new website (badly overdue!), a cool (IMO) logo and most importantly for many, moar vids. Hint: I have my eye on a new quadcopter :)

I's just checking raptors a bit more. This one above looks very nice IMO. Its pretty serious going to that level, but hopefully you'll move some.

Yesterday's ride with you and Snowchyld was pretty awesome. Seemed like you had fun on the monster. Snowchyld n I kept drinking for quite a while after that :D

How'd you go wheeling the bike up to your hotel room, get any funny looks?

Yeah that's a pretty sweet raptor! I might have to borrow that pic to show others until I have my own built up to demo.

Thanks for loaning me your ride while in Adelaide Ken, I have to say it rode pretty nice, better than I was expecting. Nice riding with you and snowchyld, chatting with architectonic and even getting a surprise cameo by Dunken on his 200w stealth bomber. You have some sweet paths around Adelaide, I only wish I had my gopro...
I went back out the next day and rode all around the same areas again. I ended up on the golf course a few times but just cruised through slowly and around the edges and no one minded. It's a strange set up, a big public golf course like that with no fences plonked smack bang in the middle of the city. One minute you're scooting along a trail by the rivers edge, the next the trail suddenly ends and you're in the middle of the fairway with the only notification being a sign that says "this is a public golf course, look out for golf balls"
I was so tempted to misbehave on some of those big smooth grassy jumps and berms
Just as well I didn't moments later 2 cops came wandering past on horses. I said g'day and they didn't look twice at the bike.

As for wheeling it into the hotel, yeah it was a bit of a flashy place so pushing any sort of bicycle through would have raised eyebrows

Another police horse, this one had horsepower envy :p

And some art piece thingo I rode past and though would look cool with a shot of your bike :)

No worries. Yeah you said you were impressed with the rear shock. Its the Manitou Radium Expert 190mm . I spent a while tuning the suspension under Rix advice and set up the ca v3 with a smooth but quick ramp and thermal power roll back.

Thanks for those cool pics. Ha the hotel. Bit posh in there, very nice.
Looks like you covered quite a bit of ground on your solo ride. Well done.

Awesome! Those some great pics with PenD's build in the various locations Jay. Glad you had fun riding in Adelaide. Yah, I figred if I ever make it to the Ritz, I will ride it straight into the elevator.

Yeah the shock seemed to soak up the bumps better than my daily ride (the modded diamondback) but then it originally came with a shitty $10 shock set up so maybe the linkages etc aren't optimal.

And yeah you're thermal rollback was quite seamless. I guess we weren't going going too hard for too long but I didn't notice it.
How much did you dial down the throttle ramp ? I found it quite gentle, perhaps a little too much for getting off the line rapidly. Is it too twitchy on 100v otherwise ? Or maybe you're just running alot less current than I'm used to.

Oh and re: the hotel, I was tempted to lean it against the grand piano across the other side of the foyer but thought that might be pushing my luck a little

Hi Mate
You'll probably get a wee nibble on the hook from me for a Raptor frame - I've been toying with the idea for a short while...and I think a couple of others around hereabouts were thinking the same. I even went as far as getting some details from Qulbix on group buys etc.
I'll send you a PM if you don't mind...
Be cool all
DK

*Edit
PS - I'm also keen on a custom 4s3/4p 18650 battery pack - are you the man for that?

Hey DK,
Sure mate, happy to hook you up. I think you'll find my offer of free shipping works out better off than even the group buy prices for 5 frames but we can discuss it over PM as you said.

As for the battery, I'm also in the process of working on an 18650 battery combo to go with these frames that maximises performance, is safe, noob friendly and easy to install ( ie not a lipo jigsaw and mess of wires!)
But if you want to go with lipo Chris is the man to see there in WA for maximum neatness.
When you say 4S, are you actually after a ~12v accessory battery ? If so I'd recommend using a small DC-DC converter powered from your main pack voltage instead.

Yep - you're deal is a good one to be sure!
Re: 4S3/4P 18650 - it's for a booster pack on my current ride - turnkey BH Neo Jumper. Over on whirlpool they figured out a speedhack and by wiring in an extra 'booster battery' the max speed heads north of 40kph (I know....scarey eh... ). As the current integrated battery pack is 10s4p of Samsung 22P 18650 cells was hoping to get a custom 4s4p made of same sells to wire up in series. Defintely if it was just an accessory pack I'd be using a DC-DC convertor as you rightly suggest.
Re: Raptor - would be torn between Li Ions and Lipos. Chris makes a cracking package and if I was running a Cromotor @ the rear on a slightly lower voltage (would like to use the integrated Adaptto controller so max 100v) the benefit of super amps for brutal acceleration would have me leaning towards Chrisis Lipos. Having said that, Li Ions are definitely a safer chemistry and are now exceeding the LiPos in energy densty (by some margin in some cases). Current and terminating appears to remain the issue...
Oh the choices...why do we have to have a free market... :D
Gonna script up a PM shortly
Thanks for the quick reply and good luck with it all!

what demographic would that be, Hyena: people who want something truly stealthy (not Stealthy!), but still with a decent amount of power?

If the heat was getting up to 100+ on the windings the power would have been lower and made the throttle ramp seem even slower . normally it lurches off the line pretty hard. Seeing as I had all that drama with replacing the broken axle I don't mind having the throttle ramp on the slightly slower side so I don't break another one. Also yeah your 10kw with no ramp would be allot more twitchy than my 6kw with a bit of ramping I'm guessing.

Exactly. Something a bit more 'urban assault' oriented, maybe appealing to the sort of crowd who buys a stealth fighter with crazy bob tyres and uses it only for commuting but doesn't want to attract the sort of attention that riding a stealth in public will earn you. A hyena in sheeps clothing

Ah yeah I forgot about the broken axle. I dont want to jinx myself but I'm surprised I've never had one over the years.
And yes I don't use any ramping. The only ramps I get enthused about look like THIS :p

Technically 1hp = 745 watts!, that's almost three times the legal limit! Bookem hyena! :D
haha it'd be an interesting race actually, I can't imagine a 750w ebike would beat a horse, they can be pretty bloody fast!

well, that's exactly what I've been looking for - I thought your demographic might be "fat, bald old man, who likes speed, doesn't want to get noticed (or at least caught) if ocassionally doing so, and would prefer not to burn down his house and kill his family while charging..." - so, similar then, to what you said - where do I sign up? :D

sorry about it being vertical, but... just to show an idea I had
I was planning on having something like this made, or possibly the same principle with full suspension. Hidden cabling, concealed battery, weight not as important as concealment.
View attachment bike.pdf

haha, what I had planned is a little more elegant :p
But there is actually an ebike like that that's all one long section like you've drawn. Would be cheap to make atleast!
I forget what it's called now

In other news, I discovered a sweeeet downhill / technical single track trail today somewhat near my house. It was off one of the trail I often ride and just happened to notice a little trail shooting off the side of a wider one. I followed it, down across a creek and then up a steep rocky section where I had to push the bike but then found the trail flattened out a bit and got really good. Too twisty and technical to ride at high speed for the most part and then some of it got really hairy with the track only a foot wide in parts and dropping sheer away down about 10m to the river/creek below
A few times I nearly came unstuck but thankfully didn't as the bike would be trashed and I'd be sporting broken bones for sure. I was doing some massive counter balancing as the bike tyre way right on the edge of the path and heading that way and I had to lean all my weight off the other side to keep the bike somewhat upright. Then I came across several bridge sections. The MTB trail fairies have spent alot of time making these trails :) It got really steep in parts - up and down and I actually got my crown motor too hot to touch for the first time. I guess roaring back up technical downhill trails is where a sealed crown running upwards of 6kw draws the line :p

One of the trails I was exploring suddenly came to an end at a big gully. There was evidence of freshly hacked long grass and beer bottles laying around so this might be where the trail fairies called it quits.

Here's a needle threading section of the trail, you can see from the red section of the rock next to my pedal where others have smashed it on the way through. Easily done with no margin for error.
