good to hear you got the camera fixed.....the fornicating bush walkers you stalk will be less happy im sure...

They don't have to worry about my SLR, it's the helmet cam the need to fear :p

Speaking of cameras I have a cool new toy on the way for action vids. Having pretty much given up on the little micro sd cameras that die rapidly I mounted a normal AV out type wide angle bullet camera to the shoulder plate of my body armour and got a pretty sweet angle. It shoots down my arm to show my hands on the handlebars and then the view out in front. Unfortunately when I plugged it into my old dv camcorder which has AV-in recording the AV-in signal doesn't seem to work. Soo... I bought this:
It's basically like any other MP4 player out there but it has AV-in video encoding/recording.

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/4G-Digital-Video-Recorder-Player-Hi-Res-DVR-AV-in-out-/270684413618?pt=AU_DigitalVideoRecorders&hash=item3f060c5eb2

318packingshow.jpg

It's not going to record in gopro hd quality but should do the job nicely me thinks.

The benefit over the other micro cameras is I can actually align the camera perfectly with the screen and then slip the recorder into my pocket or bag or what ever. Or mount it on the bars and have a switch to flick over the to rear view camera as a "virtual mirror"
Plus is plays music and movies, so I can watch a movie while stuck at the lights :p

So my little recorder arrived this arvo. Sadly the resolution is pretty poor and not much good for anything much more than youtube. The encoding is no better than those cheap microSD cameras, actually it's probably a touch worse, but being able to plug an external camera in is a bonus, and hopefully it lasts a little longer.

Here's a quick video I shot from a few different angles earlier. The late afternoon sun isn't the best for recording but oh well. Watermarks thrown in for blatent advertising purposes :p

Warning: the resolution of this video may cause herpes :|

For those interested in the camera mounts, the shots looking down my arms was with the camera mounted on the shoulder plate of my armour, the one looking at the front wheel was stuck to the pedal, the one looking back at me was with the camera on the end of a long stick taped to the stem (hence pretty shakey) and there rear one was under the back of the seat.

Nice work Jay, I like the vid a lot and you don't look like you wear frocks or like boys, whats Kim on about???
The solar panels are cool, I have just signed up for a 4kw system, can't wait.
Cheers,

LoL & Matt...how could you tell the video was that grainy it was hard to make out anything
my Internets capped and it still played uninterrupted  think it might cause more
than herpes Jay  Seriously mate nice job, the camera angles look great, think we will
have to bite the bullet and buy GoPro HD cameras though ;-S

Thanks mate.
I think Kim is the one who secretly prefers blokes. It's like picking on the girl in school that you like, but he's outa luck
I'd have liked to get more solar panels - I've got miles of roof space but I didn't have the cash up front to drop another 10 grand on them right after buying the house and having the missus off work with a new baby. I was lucky, the NSW govt axed the buy back amount from 60c/kw to 20c about 2 weeks after I ordered mine, so I just scraped in. What's the feed in tarrifs like over in WA ?

Kim a gopro might definitely be in my future - I've got a mate who has the 720p version so I'm going to borrow that and see what the quality is like. They can be had for around $200 which isn't bad. I'll need to make some killer videos though to make sure the forthcoming sales pay for it :p

Wow 60c/kw is excellent, ours is 47c/kw and is should stay at that for 10 years if the government keeps their promise.
It is quite a layout up front for a larger system, our 4kw system is $19k with us paying $12k and the gov paying the other $7k. We can recoup the $12k in about 4 years with the 47c feed in tariff.
I have had a good read of this forum, http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1382890 , loads of great info. People talk about the return on your money being around 20%, which is a great investment.
More importantly I'm really looking forward to having green energy.

All this talk of Lipo on your bikes has made me just strip 20 Cells of 16ah Headways on my Cannondale Gemini 9C 7x9 40 amp infineon setup......and contemplate putting in 15ah of Lipo! Hmmm can I afford it.....can I afford NOT to do it.

You know you want to!

Someone was asking me about the different ebike battery types the other day, so I'll post it here in simple terms :p

Hyena's guide to ebike battery technology (if they were women)

SLA

This is the fat girl at school. She ate all the pies and if you have to put her on the back of your bike you'll know all about the extra weight. She may break your frame if you're rough with her. That said she'll put out because she doesn't know when someone will show interest in her again. Expect some nasty sagging, and while she might be able to travel 20 miles at walking pace, don't expect her to go that far if you make her run. Expect her heart to give out after a year.

2-3C LiFePO4

This is common plain Jane from accounts. She'll cost you a bit more than SLA the Hutt but you won't break your back lugging her around and she won't drop dead after a year of you exercising her. She does have asthma though so while she'll whip along the flat OK don't expect her sprint off the line or blaze up steep hills.

6-10C LiFePO4

If wheezy Jane from accounts isn't performing well enough for you meet Helga. Part Barvarian, part Viking she can run just as fast as Jane but has bigger muscles to flex. Wanna get off the line quick or up that steep hill ? She'll throw you over her shoulder and carry you up. The trade off is she isn't exactly slight... mmmm, chunky

20-50C Lipo

Meet Kara Kent. She's hot with a fit athletic body but for her small size and weight her power is out of this world. She can easily lift 20x her weight, be super fast and in the RC world she can fly. Be warned, if you get on the wrong side of her she'll melt your skin off with her heat vision. She's a little higher maintenance than Helga, but isnt she worth it ?!

hyena-batteries.jpg

I hope the masses enjoy their lifepo4, I'm happy with lipo between my legs

Hi Jay, seeing you put it that way, the 6-10C LiFePO4 looks appealing  Second thoughts, she'll probably break my ... so Kara will just have to do! I'm used to hi-maintenance women anyway :)

Reminds me of a slogan from about 40 years ago ... Want something hot, red and throbbing between your legs? ... Buy a Honda (tho nowadays, that'd be a Duke  )

LMAO! Hyena,
You have created the post i will link all my (male/hetro anyways)battery inquisitors to, for the straight info on what to expect from batteries
Brilliant...Thanks for the grin.

Awesome post Jay!

Nevertheless I am happy with my 72v Helga and quite enjoy being tossed (thrown) off and beat up every now and then :D
I think I would end up breaking Kara Kent though... could we build a Kara/Helga hybrid pack?

In other news, I decided not to impose herpes causing low def videos on you guys any more
Expect a number of crazy angles and action shots once this arrives

So, how about this heat hey ?

This mornings commute was the nicest I've had in ages. It was already warm outside when I left home and dressed in t shirt and shorts the 'wind chill' (for lack of a better term) zipping along at ~50km/hr created a perfect cool breeze. As soon as I stopped at intersections I quickly started to warm up so was happy to get moving again. It's going to be a stinker today here in sydney (and probably most of the rest of the country too) - the forecast is 42 degrees! (thats 107 F for you yanks) eerrrggh. I normally select a lower speed mode and pedal more on the way home to get some exercise but I think I'll be taking it easy on both myself and the motor. I'm sure my sealed motor won't like taking 5000w with the high ambient temp.
I rode home in 42 degree heat one day last year and it was dead set like sticking your head in a fan forced over. I had to ride slow because the increase in heat at high speed was almost painful. My motor was scorching hot when I got home (and that was only 2000w) and alot of the electrical tape I had on various wires and connecters had half melted off. I'm enjoying the A/C in my office while it lasts!

How's that snow going northerners ? :p

edit: Dammit, I jinxed myself. I didn't take my normal charger to work with me today, instead I took a new meanwell and thought I'd mod it to use as a charger then charge up and ride home (leaving it there as my work charger). The modding went as usual. I sealed it all up and took it back to my lab, plugged it in and the light went out. I unplugged the battery and nothing - it's dead. Crap.
I'm getting the missus to pick me up, I'm not dying of heat stroke lugging the bike 1/2 way home with a flat battery :p

No sign of my gopro yet, hopefully any day now.

In other vaguely ebike related news I finally got my solar panels connected up to the grid today. There'd been an Australia wide shortage of the smart meters apparently after everyone ran out and signed up before the NSW govt axed the 60c/kw buy back. At the same time I switched my billing over to the 'powersmart home' scheme which is dearer during peak times but gives me offpeak power for 8c/kw from 10pm to 7am and can be used for anything - not just the usual off peak hot water. I'll be sure and set my pool pump to run during this time, plus I can charge up my ebikes with a timer during this period too, although the power consumption of a meanwell or 2 running for an hour is pretty minimal. Still, that's $36/year I'll save in running my bike - meaning it costs a total of $31/ year to run, less than 1/2 the price of a single tank of petrol for my car
And technically it costs nothing because of the solar panels. Next up, training my wife not to leave the 50" plasma tv on all day... :|

Maybe I should rig up a big bank of lipo and an inverter, charged up in off peak and used to run the rest of the house during the day :p
LED lighting would be a good start if I wanted to be serious about it...

Should be a snap, seeing how you trained her to mow the lawn, yes, he even sent me a pic of his missus mowing the lawn LoL
and dont worry it wont be posted, can't be getting him in any more trouble :p

Can't wait too see some HiDef footage from the GoPro mate, may i suggest some excurtions into the fornicating
areas out back in the natural Forrest where you last spotted the "Large breasted wiminzialia" in her
natural form...And a few HiGHSiDE Hyena flips to top the footage off would be great thx kk bai... :p

haha yes I'll have to make sure I'm diligent with the gopro use. I often see stuff and think "geez I wish I had a camera rolling"
I reckon a trip down the beach is in order in any case

I spoke too soon about the gopro not having arrived yet, it was on my door step when I got home!

gopro.jpg

Pic with some 6S lipo packs for size reference. These things really are quite tiny for the quality they produce.

No test footage for a few days but hopefully I'll have some prelim footage to play with on the weekend. Then shortly after GCinDC will have some competition in the HD ebike video world

I've noticed :p

I threw the gopro on my handlebars this afternoon (duct taped to the stem) for a quick test ride. The quality isnt brilliant as it was 7pm and thus nearly dark but it came out ok.
Greg I always assumed you had horribly noisey brakes but the gopros seem to kill wind noise yet amplify what is quiet! When I'm the brakes and motor don't seem that loud - certainly not the brakes.

Anyway here's a quick demo from a lap around the block - nothing exciting, no cunning stunts or epic moves and the video is only 720p with average compression but it won't induce herpes atleast :p

The bike is my commuter with 18S2P lipo and new 9x7 9C

Nice. Low light is tough for the gopro. It loves bright light.
Hyena said:

Yep. Audio is the weak link. I think the mic picks up mainly physical vibrations. So if it's mounted on the fork with the disc brake, it picks up much more vibration than is audible... Try it out of box, recording normal speech. Not very nice. Very tinny. And it somehow picks up the tiniest movements of your fingers gripping it...

Which backing did you have on? The waterproof one? The backs interchange very easily, done properly...

I passed a cop yesterday between two cars, ran a red light and then a block later was bummed knowing that the gopro wouldn't pick up his siren following me... :(

I ditched him tho. :p Or he dropped off the chase? I don't know. I noticed suddenly he wasn't there so disappeared...

GCinDC said:

Yeah I had the open back on, as per the instructions I was doing less than 100 mph
What mounts do you use on your bike itself ? The stick on ones that came with all seem to be for flat surfaces and it doesn't seem to have any right angle attachments. I guess I'll have to make up some L brackets. I've got an old tripod with a dodgy leg so I'll hack that up to make a panning/tilt mount.

heh, it would have been even worse if he did give good chase and you didnt get the footage of you making the escape!
Not the sort of thing you want to post on youtube though!

In other news, I pulled my original 15S2P lipo pack off my commuter bike tonight. I noticed months ago that the metal box I had it in was popping open a bit. I figured it was because I only had it taped closed and it had stretched over time. Turns out the packs inside had gotten a little puffy. I haven't balanced them in a whole year (only ever charged with a meanwell) and just checking with the celllog every cell in the whole pack is reading 3.74-3.75v (after my commute home from work) I've noticed it's sagging a little more lately and is pretty much done at 9ah but still, the balance is still spot on. Very impressive all things considered. I'm not going to do anything about the slight puffing - it's more than likely been like it for months and I bet it'll be fine for ages to come but I'll take it off daily ride and put in on a weekend bike for now. I know alot of people run around with their hands in the air when the see a puffed lipo but meh, if it does blow up on me one day I'll have an amusing story to tell :p

puffers2.jpg

puffers.jpg

On another note, I made a super bright LED tail light. 2x DX red crees and driver powered directly from a little 5v 1.5a AC power supply that came with some USB device I bought ages back. I opened up the case and put the LED driver inside and wired it direct to the SMPS output. Wires going back to the main pack voltage exit out the rear. I couldn't quite get the case back shut with the driver board and extra wiring inside but I'll epoxy the whole thing shut later then remove the cable ties (plus put a clear cover over the front of the LEDs with the edges blacked out to hide the wiring.
On high constant high power the stars get a little hot but on fast flash (which I usually use) they barely get warm, so they'll be fine without a larger heat sink.

HAHA ain't that the truth...its safe to be cautions but some of the lengths some chaps go
to when charging is amusing, you have to get things so freakin wrong when charging
modern lipo to get any sort of reaction out of them... You have had a decent run out of
this pack Jay, no balancing in over 12 months must be some sort of record.
I would slice and reseal those packs myself, the ones i did are still perfectly balanced.

KiM

EDiT: Jay have you watched this week ep of Top Gear? JC makes note of the bicyclists
in London riding around with cameras... i like the GoPro to BTW, the price puts me off
though i serious can't see the value but still want one LoL.

Yeah I probably should, a job for a rainy day me thinks.
I'm sure they've still got plenty of life in them but I'm more than pleased with the service I've gotten from them if they did happen to die tomorrow. At the moment my thinking is it's less effort to jump off the bike if they start to smoke than it is to repair them.

Nah not yet, it's on the hard drive but I've had stuff on the last few nights. It's only 6 weeks or so until I'm over in Perth, I'll bring it when I come if you like and you can borrow it to make some videos. So there you go, you have 6 weeks to get the cruiser in top running condition :p

I'll make up some mounts when I get a chance but for this mornings commute to work I just taped it to the back of the bike looking down the back wheel. I had the rest of the wiring a bit jerry rigged as I quickly threw this pack on when I removed the puffed one and the pack level buzzer I dodgily shoved into one of the andersons must have shorted against the seat. The bike still ran fine and I was unaware but when I got to work and reviewed some of the footage I notice a shoot of sparks flew out when I went up a gutter. When I looked at the back of the bike to see where the sparks could have come from I found this.
No biggy.
