Hyperion EOS 1420i NET3 14s Balance Charger...

I sent an email to empire RC, their US dealer. I don't know if people can even contact hyperion directly.. there's no contact info on their site that I was able to find.

Thanks. hopefully they will have an answer for you.

anyone know for sure?

I guess I don't understand the question. You want to parallel two Hyperions together, just to increase the charge current? Although it theroetically might work, or at least not blow anythng up (assuming only one of the 1420is had all the balance plug connections...), there's a much easier, and cheaper way to do the same thing. You could use a dumb supply/charger set to a few volts below the max voltage the Hyperion is set to, and then hook in in parallel with the 1420i's main + and - connections. Once the total pack voltage gets to the level the extra supply/charger maxes out at, the extra supply will stop supplying current, and the Hyperion would then continue on to finish balance charging the pack.

So isolated bulk charging while running hyperion? I feel bad because my 24V power supply is rated for over 50A... One hyperion pulls around 23A..

I am hoping to run 20s or 21s by october, so it might as well be worth buying another 1420i. What do you think?

You can't run two Hyperions in series from the same power supply. Each needs its own isolated supply.

You can't run them in series off one supply. My gut feeling is that that is accurate in that you can't run them in series... that wouldn't make sense to ever run chargers in series... unless you're bulk charging and you define "charger" as "psu". -- however you can run them in parallel off one supply. That makes much sense. I don't see why they would need to isolated.. You simply set each charger to see a little less than half of your power supply throughput rating..

Humm... I always thought I could get a 24v 50a dumb power supply and hook as many smart charger I wanted.
So I can not use 24v 50a DC power supply with 2 1420i?
Thats odd....

Btw can I set the hyperion to charge only up to 4.10v per cell?

tks

Yeah it would seem to be odd.

TVC Function (Terminal Voltage Control per each memory slot, LIPO and LIFE)
The TVC function allows adjustment of final CHARGE voltage for LIPO and LIFE battery types for each memory position:
+0mV (default, therefore no change. Lipo=4.200V terminal, LIFE=3.600V terminal)
+5mV to +80mV (5mV steps, so LIPO for example terminates at 4.205V~4.280V)
-5mV to -20mV (5mV steps, so LIPO for example terminates at 4.195V~4.180V)
The TVC Function is found in every memory slot for Lipo and Life, below TCS ACTION setting screen. Note that the TCV settings
are RETAINED, like other Memory settings, when the charger is powered off. Be SURE that this setting is correct before using
any LIPO or LIFE memory slot (Default TVC=0mV strongly recommended).

BUt, you can also set capacity to charge to... say 95%. That might do it.

TCS has two settings: TCS CAPACITY %, and TCS END ACTION.
* The TCS CAPACITY Setting is selected from the MEMORY screen by pressing UP button four times (or DOWN seven times).
TCS Capacity can be set from 50% to 100% in 5% increments (default is 100%, a full charge). The charger uses your setting
for Battery Capacity in addition to sophisticated measurements and calculations to make a close estimate for the currently
charged capacity in the pack during charging.
* TCS END ACTION can be set to CONTINUE (default) and STOP. If CONTINUE, when TCS% is reached for settings 50% to
95%, the charger will “beep” 10 times, but continue charging to 100% until stopped. If TCS ACTION is set to STOP, the charger
will stop charging at that TCS setting and - if balancing is complete – then give COMPLETE (END) Buzzer according to your
buzzer settings. (or continue till balanced, then give End buzzer

I love my Hyperion 1420 but I think I broke it. I was charging a 5 s pack. When I made the last connection which I believe was the pack positive wire I heard a small pop. Now whatever pack I connect the charger shows cell #5 voltage about 1 volt below the actual value. I contacted Empire for service. I would be interested if anyone knows what may have blown and if it is repairable.

hello,
I bought the 1420i with 12s2p kit a few months ago. I just received my batteries and getting ready to use and charge. can some share the exact configuring settings to charge 6S 5000mah in 12s2p setup? i tried reading the whole 16 page from this topic and I could not find it.

thanks.

Empire said to just send the charger back for warranty coverage so that's what I did.

The LCD screen on the first 1420i I bought last year is starting to die. It works fine when I first power the charger up, but then it starts to slowly dim until an hour or two later its totally off. The charger still charges properly, its just the LCD that goes off. I'll see how Hyperion handles the warranty on it.

I used mine almost exclusively connected to the laptop. I can't wait to get it back from service my packs are all getting low!

Just got my 1401 back from empire!
It is making up for lost time now charging a bunch of Lipos!
Does anyone know the correct sequence to connect and disconnect batteries and power supply.
I gather it is like this:
connecting.
1. power supply to A/C
2. Charger to power supply
3. Balance wires
4. main pack leads

Disconnecting reverse order of above.

From the manual at http://media.hyperion.hk/dn/eos/EOS-NET%26DUO42-MAN-EN46.pdf:
Note: Always connect the Output Cable set to charger first, then power CHARGER ON, then connect Battery MAIN Wires, then Battery BALANCE adapter. Never connect a pack to a charger which is powered OFF. After charging is finished, always disconnect the Battery main wire connectors from Output Cable set first; then disconnect Output Cable set from charger.

So the pack main leads come before the balance leads in their description. But the key thing is to never have the charger off with a battery connected.

As to your steps 1 and 2, the power supply to charger sequence, I'm paranoid after having fried an iCharger when connecting to a 12 V battery as power source. So I have my meanwell power supply (doesn't have an on/off switch) plugged into a power bar with a switch on it, always connected to the charger. That way I don't plug the charger to a live power supply (with possible spark at the connector). The power switch is before the meanwell, hopefully smoothing any bumps to the charger. But I'd be happy to hear from those that properly understand these things, if that is a good way or not.

I got that spark a few times. Now I make it habit to plug the charger into the PSU BEFORE plugging the PSU into the wall.

My 1420i at home is making bad fan noises when it starts up... groaning, I would call it. After about a minute the noise goes away, but I don't think it's healthy. I transported this charger by bike for about a month before I bought another one so I could leave them at home & work.

Any probable causes? If it's just a loose component inside I'll go after it.

A lot of chargers do that .. sometimes you have to tap them. idk.

My hyperion is overshooting a lot of charge cycles. I told it to Store overnight and I woke up in the morning and it was still charging at 78%. restarted it, and now it's discharging back down to 60%. This could be dangerous!

Just tried it again with TCS set to 70%.. it charged up to 84%.

The storage mode on the Hyperion charger and the low TCS settings will give you inconsistent results on every charge. This has been discussed a lot on RCGroups and also in this thread a few pages up:

http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=23362&start=165#p417999

I only use the charge modes with mine which consistently gives me 4.16V per cell at 95% and 4.12V per cell at 90%. The storage mode will give me pretty much anything between 3.7 and 3.9V. The lower TCS settings also give me a wide range of end voltages.

To discharge for winter storage I just rode around a bit until I reached my desired voltage and then just unplugged the whole thing.

It used to work well with store mode. Now the tcs indicator on the LCD will actually change dramatically during charge, say from 90% to 67%. It must be a firmware problem.. It started doing this with 5 and 5.1. There's no point of a $180 charger if it can't do this correctly.

Complain to where ever you bought it from.
