I need to bring 12vdc down to 10v ..

Luke,

Can Diodes solve world hunger? In series of course...

Also, if we move to a flat tax, what will that do to resistors?

I'm going to take my meds now...

in case you guys where wondering

this mod was indended for xbox 360 fan mod

the default fan mod runs the fans at 12v which is extremly loud!!!

10v fan mod reduces the sound a bit.. however there is still quite a bit of noise due to the xbox fan shroud... which blocks the air flow quite a bit and creats alot of sound...

and not only that .. the default rpm of the xbox 360 is way to slow.... after gaming with stock fan speed gpu was sitting at about 65 degrees!!!... go figure why like 90% of consoles fail due to heat problem!

after 10v fan mod to the existing fans in the xbox and one additional fan i added to the gpu heatpipe sink, i even lapped the gpu sink that was horrible!!! .. it was not flush at all .. took me about 1 hour to lap it to 1500 grit finish... ... i was able to get the temp to around 35-40 degress during game play ... a durastic improvement.

Great Steve :) Now you've got a new trick up your sleeve for working with low power electronics. :)

Are there any simple tricks to increase voltage in similar small increments?

If it's a pulsed DC voltage, yes--you can use diodes and capacitors to do it. But it is probably easier to use something like the simple two-transistor Roman Black switching regulators for it.

OK so it was pretty early in the morning when i asked my questions, and hadn't bothered looking into diodes too much at 5am (AUS)
So i have since learnt that diodes do have polarity, and that Australian electronic stores dont stock anything i need, ever, I will shop online from here on in. Jay-car only stocked n4004 (higher amps but i bought them anyway for a shiny dollar.) and didnt have any SP3T switches.
I can only dream of what it must be like walking into a radio shack...

Still not sure exactly how much heat the diodes will create, and i remembered the main question i was meant to ask

Will i need more diodes or different ones if im running 4 of said fans **EDIT** I now realise i may have to buy a Bugatti Veyron as my current car wont cut it.

And if all this is too much then ill Go the mosfet/pot method, and heatsink the crap outta the mosfets, and put a fan on them which soughta defeats the purpose, im still totally in the dark about what MOSFET i need. im pretty sure a 10k pot will surfice. All i know is anything i make myself would have to be a hundred times better than any of the Firestarting pc fan controllers out there, most cant handle over 4watts a channel.

Stevo,
nice job on machining down the heat sink on the gpu, ive never read of anybody else doing it. How old is your xbox? curious if it was heat related warpage. I had the same problem on my xbox, on both cpu and gpu sinks, Id say doing this would of reduced the temps more so than the fan. Have you replaced your thermal grease with a ceramic type? Have you considered replacing those awful X-clips with some washers and screws?(stops the cpu/gpu dies from separating from the board after long use)

I sent some diodes in series to the Australian board of energy and conservation today, Soughta expecting the doctor to rock up at my place anytime soon, con me into his Delorean and make me go back in time to kill the inventor of diodes

I needed to drop 12V down to 8.4V to power a P7 LED flashlight used as a headlight. I tried diodes and they worked great - except in this case the current was high enough that they got blistering hot.

So I switched to one of these programmed to 8.4V.

Yes, it is about 25 times more expensive than the 3A diodes I used ($25 vs $1), but because of the efficiency it generates very little heat and ultimately consumes almost 1/3 less current. The run time of the battery is significantly improved.

Why not just using a dedicated LED driver instead? They're pretty simple to DIY, just lookup Linear Technology, National Semis or even Zetex.

Nope. I'm too ignorant and lazy... ;)

Seriously though, thanks for the tip...

i've done the screw mod/ laped the sink; added an extra fan to the gpu heat pipe sink; & 10 v fan mod.

How much did the 3 diodes heat up from the fan mod?
