I'll be honest,

I kinda jumped into the ebiking thing and just started buying stuff that looked good. In retrospect, I could have saved a lot of money and headache hours if I did more homework. However, I can't say that I'm disappointed at all with my current setup. It seems to work for me, even though based on the things I've read on this forum, ... my setup kinda "sucks." This is what happens when I want a new toy and get my quarterly commission check at the same time.

I used a bike I already owned. Trek 4300 with Disc Brakes - "Oh, is aluminum bad? oops"
http://www.electricrider.com - Wow, that video of the phoenix motors is awesome. I want a PHOENIX RACER!!! 5303. That things is fast. I wanna go fast, too. Cha-ching!$$$

48V 10Ah SLA Battery - "I recommend you upgrade to a ...," "Whatever, can I go fast?" "yeah," ok, I'll take it.

So I went fast, for a while,.. but then started using the bike to go to work. 12 miles each way. I get to work, charge the battery... I expect it to be done 5-8 hours later. 2 hours later, fully charged already?! I average about 17mph if you include stoplights and avoiding crazy drivers. I show up to work a little sweaty, but just as sweaty as I would be if I stood still outside for 30 mins, probably not even as much (it's been a hot summer).

2 weeks ago I rode in some sunrise charity bike ride. 25 miles straight. I pedaled along mostly because I felt bad that the rest of my friends were pedalling. I put in just barely more effort than needed to mimic the motion of pedaling, mostly just to maintain cadence, or whatever they call it. Anyways, more of a "for fun" ride. Averaged about 16mph. Event ended, biked from finish line to my car.. that was parked 4 miles away. At this point, it's almost 5am in downtown chicago,... and the roads are almost void of cars... paradise. Decided to really be a rebel and go fast, turn fast, act like a kid in a candy store, and basically hauled ass back to my car. Got home, unloaded bike,.. was feeling wired so i went for ANOTHER ride, 2-3 miles (this time on a rock dirt trail). Got home, again, plugged in. good night.

so yeah.. aluminum frame bike, 1 disc brake in front, 5303 phoenix racer, 48v40a controller, 48v10Ah SLA batts,.... with these SLA Batts, i feel like my setup should suck. But it aint so bad. SO, maybe I pedal too much. Do a lot of ya'll really not pedal at all? doesn't it just feel weird not to? I am the type to prefer flying under the radar tho. oh well.

Modifications since inception:
- Moved SLA's into frame. Wow, handling is so much better now
- 2-24v12Ah NiMH's on the way. should reduce battery weight from 29lbs to 18lbs. Is losing 11lbs really gonna make that big a difference on this current 80-some odd-lb (at least) fatty?? I weigh about almost 170 myself. Maybe I should be the one to lose weight.
- Torque arms added - using 10mm cone wrenches till my "real ones" arrive.
- New tires. 2 inch semi slicks front, 2.125 semi slicks back. Mr Tuffy liners, and I been good ever since.

Heh. Pedal? My BMX had its chain permanently removed because I wanted a rear motor and only had a front. My MTB isn't geared high enough for me to pedal at above around 23mph, and I'm looking to top out at higher than the 27mph I do now.

Your setup doesn't "suck" per se, but that 5303 is not being used to its fullest at only 48V. Add another 24 and then you'll see what this thing was made to do. 8)

That 11lbs of difference isn't going to do much, but the batteries themselves will be far better than the SLA. They'll be smaller, live through more cycles, and have more power longer into the ride.

I am in Vancouver, BC, (Burnaby Specifically) & I intentionally ride a powered down 17Amp controller, motor similar to a 407. When I reach the seawall in Downtown Vancouver I often detach the power all together. It's great exercise! I am frequently passed by non powered cycles. :)

hey, me too.

I pretty much do the entire Ontario St. bike route so I need to know how much power I need to make it up from Marine Dr. to 41st ave. It's more steep going northbound than it is going southbound.

Oh my gawd do I pedal! I sometimes wish I didn't have to, but climbing 1,600ft in 3.5 miles kinda requires all you've got even with ebike assist... now when I can save up enough to upgrade to a 5305 it might be a different story. As is it with my 4011 I can still beat the best local racing cyclist up the mountain by 5-10 minutes so it's worth it if only for bragging rights and to get in shape. 8)

If you are mostly riding under 20 mph, you definitely spent too much for what you have, but, if you really don't like it, get a smaller motor and sell the big one, easy to to with them out of stock in a lot of places. The geared motors are supposed to be really light.

Y pedal ?

Guilty as charged.. i don't pedal nearly enough to get in shape.

I geared my daily driver ( basically my means of transportation ) to pedal assist off the line with BMX gearing on a DH bike, 72v 20 amps on a 409 20" wheel makes for a spirited takeoff ( keeps up with most cars off the line.. no problem )

Above 10 mph.. it's motor only baby !!!

( I have an ezee 36v kit on a Giant ATX mtb for exercise.. but the 72v rig is just too much fun )

No need to get all apoligitory on that bike, your setup doesn't suck at all. As long as it does what you want it to do, and its fun, who cares what everybody else thinks.. nice ride. Nicer than quite a few of the bikes here. Oh and I pedal too!

I just got my Ezip Trailz by Currie and have taken it out twice already. Love the thing considering how cheap it is. I kinda like the mild pedalling. This morning I bypassed the pedal censor and just used the throttle and thought...no I kinda like some mild pedalling...at least I am giving the impression I am doing something to please my cardiologist! But I can see in this afternoon heat of 107 here in Dallas, at the end of a long teaching day, I may hit bypass more often than i will ever admit!!!!!!

I'm curious, what kind of freewheel do you have on that bike when you ordered it from Electricrider?

I know for sure it's a Shimano with 14t high gear, but I'm not sure what the granny gear is. I think it's a 32.
