Is an automobile-based society sustainable ?

this is exactly the mentality that detroit has pandered to from the very beginning of automobile ownership by the masses. it is also in the denser dollars category too, where the BMW 8 series owner is projecting his own bigger than you by cost of ownership equation and just presumes they have rule of the road because of it.

hopefully we will run outa gas pretty soon when the chinese and indians use it up and mexico goes dry in a few years. but you can start personally preparing now for the inevitable by designing for EV charging spots in the future. if not now.
It is bigger then the Auto companies alot bigger although they may do their part to get us to buy bigger but, it is the north americian way, "BIGGER IS BETTER" "MORE IS BETTER" ect ect. it is not anyones fault other then our own! Thats it not TV not the oil company NOT ANYONE other then ourselfs! I have a friend who just lost his licence and he is to proud to get a bycicle or E-bike but as I have before, I will educate him when mine is done. I will show him how fun it is and he will most likely get into one for him self. When I say before, I showed up here (when I moved to the island) with a srt-4 (small turbo car) thats fast from the factory and still gets 41-45 mpg (cdn gallon is 4.54litres) when driven normaly. He on the other hand is and was sold on bigger is better bla bla bla and found a GMC truck with a 496 special ordered motor and it guzzles gas. He hated 4 clyinder cars TILL.... We went for a few rips in my 4cyl. 3 months later He owns one. Unfortunatly We have been spoiled with cheep gas and that is one of the biggest reasons for the big Hummers ect. europe pays alot more for gas and look at what they commute on or in. People are all going through changes in the next 10-40 years as we have to pay more for fuel ect. North america will learn to be more frugel with their money and we will have to when you have countries like China working for alot less!

Don't blame big trucks on the guys, it's the women's fault.

It's all about who has the most bling, the guys instinctively know that more women are going to go for the guys who throw the most money around. The women want a man that is not going to cheap out on them, someone who will buy them everything their heart desires. If the women had a choice between the guy that drives up in the big fancy gas hog or the guy that drives up in the economy car, she will pick the guy that is going to blow money on her. She gets that indication by the way the guy blows money on his ride and gas.

It's real simple, it's been going on forever, most women will choose the lavish lifestyle.

Yeh I think the guys who want a women who can be won over with the size of a wallet ect can have the gold digging skanks. I personaly like showing up to meet a chick in plain jane cars or in a friends car or no car at all and then when she digs me and we have fun together I wip out the Road Runner for a nice supprise! I personaly find it not to hard in todays society to find a women who makes enough money for herself so she dosen't worry about that not to mention the is alot of very atractive women out here on the west coast Its not like northern alberta Where all the guys make killer money in oil related work and about the only thing they can think to do is build a jacked up truck!

Sorry I posted on the wwrong thread. I got interupted and brainfart

I did plan to post here too. I think region makes a difference to "some" but some people don't care. My views have changed over the years. I never really wanted a big 4x4 but I did drive v-8s for years. When I made good money and had a 4 mi. commute to work I had all V-8s. I still have a 60 Chev truck with a 360 hp. 355 but I haven't drove it for 10 yrs. All my rigs now are V-6 or 4 cyl. Age and wage are factors. Of course some won't give up their guzzlers ever.

there is no need to make people throw away their vehicles if you introduce energy rationing. ration gasoline, electricty and heating fuels like natural gas or fuel oil.

then let people decide what they want to do to optimize their lifestyle in their own way. keep the guvment out of it except as the regulator to monitor the disposition of the rapidly declining amount of oil available. we don't have to wait for it to run out in 10-20 years before instituting rationing, the situation is already critical. people in this country just don't realize it because we have all the money in the world and free oil for over 70 years now.

let people sell their rations and use the money to buy ebikes or carpool using their gas ration. i think google could handle a worldwide system of carpooling, and the exchange of ration coupons too. keep the guvment out of it.

"He hated 4 clyinder cars TILL.... We went for a few rips in my 4cyl. 3 months later He owns one."

Yeah, my buddies who off-road gave my friend with the 4-cylander 'Yota a hard time. But then they noticed that his truck stays 'on-line' more often, is easier to repair, and gets significantly higher mileage.

I particularly like deronmoped's misogynism here. Do you really believe that all (or even most) chicks are gold diggers?

While I can't speak for them, I'm fairly certain that most women, while interested in luxury and comfort, are really primarily interested in having material security. As are most rational, substantive people.

When you pull up to a donk driving douchebag blasting his system at 170 decibels, do you think a majority (or plurality) of women think to themselves "I have to mate with that guy." Likewise, some bald douchebag who left his first wife and brood, and is now rocking a Viper and a pinky ring; you think the ladies are all "I gotta get me a piece of that?" Hell no.

Sure, a subset of girls might be attracted by stupid peacockery, but you can't blame the fairer sex for ostentatious male sexual insecurity.
