jonescg's NEW electric racebike BUILD thread!

There's a definite front bias to the bike, which we can sort out with some better springs and a re-valve. The only other option is to build a 168s2p battery and ride 2/3rds as far

2p is an option as you can introduce an air gap between the cells and try to ventilate them because if you don't have a heat build up problem with 3p you certainly will with 2p. Means maybe making new tab boards though.

Mine did 58km on 5.5kWh around the streets yesterday.

Thanks Rodney - yes it was a massive turn out. I had no idea it would attract this much interest! I guess when you're sponsor sells his share of a successful pub, he knows how to attract a crowd. Most of the WA racing community were out to see it and were very excited about the future of electric motorsport.

I have to thank Dennis Arsic for organising all of the media exposure we've had so far. He sent out press releases and everything - I had no idea he'd gone to such lengths! I'm a bit embarrassed about it really. I hope to return to normal life soon

We still have about 100 bugs to iron out, and getting the front suspension sorted will be a big one. It's all stock Gixxer stuff, so some decent springs and valves will be good.

Dan - yep; I reckon that a 2p pack would be pushed to it's limits for sure. I'm not a fan of the LiPo to be honest, but it was the only way to get the volts up as efficiently as possible.

You are setting an amazing example of what a DIY'er can accomplish. Great job my friend! Your work is already an inspiration to EV-teams around the world. Perhaps you could share your current build experiences and precautions taken in pack design so potential copy-cat builders can understand the importance of not short-cutting a higher voltage EV build.

I don't think it's anything to be embarrassed about Chris. You know the effort that you're put in as well as Katherine. It's taken a big sacrifice to get there.
Surprised to see so many females there a Kim.

Cracking pub, cracking turnout, cracking people, cracking (or was that crackling) BIKE...it was just snap cracking. Shame I was off the beer...dammit!
Good luck on the circuit Chris - I know I'll be following.
BTW - got a couple of things to discuss with you - will PM in the not too distant future...when are you off over east and when are you back in Perth? Appears that the first race is end of this month in cane toad land...? Appreciate you are mad busy at the moment so will likely leave it until after the first couple of races.

Sure man fire away. I'm busy, but not that busy. I found out my job interview was a negative :( Oh well, gotta keep trying.

Now, the official first test ride up the street on Monday afternoon!

Sorry about the lousy quality. I would have done some more passes but the master cylinder on the front brake wasn't venting properly, so they locked up not long after this fly-by. Nothing serious, but that would explain why the front felt so heavy  Not a big deal to remedy, just cracked the bleed nipple at the top, but it's a sign that I need a decent Brembo on there.

Here's how I drop the battery into the bike:

I'll put a few more shots up over time...

Fantastic! I am in awe at your vision, and skills at getting it done. I hope it exceeds your expectations.

Here's my sponsor, Mike, spelling out his plans for the future and introducing Voltron Evo.

Shit I hope this thing steers well

Damn it, I just typed out a long reply and it won't let me post out comes up with SQL error aaaargh..

Well, fantastic event Chris, you should be extremely proud of yourself, now it's time to kick some ass on the track!

Was great to catch up with some family faces Mr Danny Mayes, Matt who was on duty ha andd his mates drive the fire truck around the block whilst he ducked in to say hi, in full fireman get up haha classic meet a couple new ESers to Perth definitely has a strong ebike presence great to see! Look forward to having a ride with you all in the near future, I shall organise a ride day, might do one up in the hills again...?

best of luck getting the bike dialed in Chris, the jockey size rider you have must have some big balls, the bike scars me just looking at it haha

KiM

P.s @ Rodney...hehe yes there was some fiiiine looking specimens odd the female form, wimenz as I like to refer to them lol. Mike's sister was lovely girl enjoyed chatting with her...

Congratulations on completing such a sensational build, Chris. It's like a work of art, only faster. :D

Hopefully I will be heading to Queensland at the end of the month so I can see it live in action.

Daymn! Can't believe I missed it. Haven't been on the forum much recently- busy busy. Well done Chris.

Oh, and as for the master cylinder- check that the master cylinder seals aren't covering over the tiny little bleed hole that allows fluid to return to the reservoir. Quite often it's covered by funky assembly or blocked with gunk and leads to those exact symptoms.

Hey Andy - the place was f'n packed - you wouldn't have got in anyway. Yep - the master cylinder was doing exactly what you describe due to exactly that reason. The lever was a Gixxer lever for a gixxer MC, but from a different year. It held the piston slightly in so the tiny bleed hole couldn't vent. Pottz and I since replaced it with a top end Brembo lever and MC, and it's like night and day. So smooth, so powerful.

I FINALLY weighed the bike. I hadn't done it because I had damaged my last set of bathroom scales beyond repair and was simply adding all of the components up to get my much-touted 215 kg. Much to my horror I measured 127 kg on the front and 111 kg on the rear! Yes, a 238 kg behemoth. I always suspected it would be more than 215 kg, but not that much. Oh well, this season she's going on a diet. At least the front-rear bias is pretty much spot on.

At least it takes off like a rocket. It should be going faster than what I'm experiencing, but there are about a billion settings I'm still yet to work through. Currently I'd give it a 8 out of 10 on the shit-eating-EV-grin scale. I want an 11.

Hi jonescg
I sent you a PM regarding accommodation or any other assistance.
Let me know if there is anything I can to do assist with your trip to QLD raceway.
Same goes for anyone else making the trip here.

Rodney64 took some video of our tuning session at RAC driving Centre today. Was a very successful day, but we need to gear the bike much taller - we're hitting a base speed of 3700 rpm and she canna go ne' faster! Since changed the rear sprocket to something more speedy (dropped 4 teeth) but we really need to gain a couple of teeth on the front. And work out how to get this blinking thing to spin faster! At least hitting base speed brought the front end down :) Danny's got some cool front wheel footage.

Some suspension spy work.

When the first words out of the riders mouth after throwing a leg over the bike and taking it out for a few laps. for the first time are, "this thing is frocking nuts" I think you know your on the right track!

All the best for today out at Barbegello Raceway Chris, I think the fact the track is a famlari one will see a more confident rider too, this bike has crazy fast acceleration peoples, in frocking sane ... Scares me just looking at it!! need some big balls to ride this beat!

Fantastic stuff Chris was awesome watching it run..History in the making!

KiM
