I am not technical at all -just want to get my bike going so I'm happy. I am in search of either sla batteries 3x12volt 12ah (I may even need more amp hours) or LiFePO4 10 or 15ah. I don't want to pay $500 for the LiFePO4 but I am very interested in them anyhow. I live in the Bay Area (east bay) in California. Perhaps someone knows of a good vendor that I could drive to ,to avoid shipping. Or a way to buy the LiFePO4 at half price or even less.
Thanks,
Jeff

I'll post the same thing here as I did to your same post over in the "batteries for average guy" thread:

What range do you need, at what speed, and how much do you plus your bike weigh?

Remember that to get the full power (or close to it) out of lead, you have to pull a lot less amps out of it than it's rated for. Plus they only last a few hundred cycles at best, most of the time. I've been using SLAs and if I had money for something else, I'd get it.

Lithium in various flavors will be much more capable both in how much power you can draw from it without draining it dry too quick, even for a smaller Ah pack, and will probably last many more cycles, too. I'm going to make an educated guess that the lithium will cost over it's lifetime about the same as the lead you'd've had to use to do the same thing, and weigh a lot less. But it does depend on which kind, and who makes it, and so on.

I'm 175 pounds and my bike is a Magna from either Target or Costco. It seems average in weight. I need to go 7 miles at least on a slight uphill grade (in a car you'd think it was flat but on my bike my batteries definately feel the difference.) There is one 100 yard hill of more incline but not a lot of one. I currently have 3x12v 8ah but it may be that they have lost some juice as I nearly drained them the first time or two I used them. I've always charged them right after use. They are one month old. I can't make that 7 miles unless I pedal almost all the way. I want to do that 7 miles with minimal pedaling on certain commute days. I can get 3x12volts 12ah locally. I've seen 3x12v 14ah for about the same price on line (Tempest). I don't think I want 48volts as my controler may not like it and I'm not interested in the extra speed (I go 25mph on flat already), plus I'm not interested in the extra weight.
Thanks for your help.

I have a question. I have not registered at evcomponents, I don't know if it matters to check shipping. When I put in my state and zip and hit recalculate the price does not change. Is it free shipping? If so that would be awesome..

A set of 12 ah sla's would do ya, but you'd have to ride at less than full speed to keep the discharge depth low enough for them to last. I like to think of 12 ah sla's as good for 5-6 miles at full speed, flat ground. I don't recall your controller, but an aotema (WE) can definitely go 48v in sla or nicad. Make sure the sla's are for running a motor of some kind, not lights or computers. Wall mart toy car batteries are the ideal kind, $50 each.

A good option though, for your distance is nicads. They don't have the limitations of depth of discharge or needing to charge immediate that sla's have. Ebikes .ca stil sells em because for many riders, they are still perfect. They are known to be noob proof. Some of the more recent offerings of headway are still a better deal, though they might cost 50-100 bucks more.

But you won't regret buying a larger battery size since I garantee you, once you have 20 + mile range you will find wonderfull ways to use it. Getting out the plastic, and going for a 36v 15 ah, or 36v 20 ah pack will not be regreted by 99% of buyers. Ping is a great supplier, though pricy. But isn't High Tech Bikes in the bay area? He's a great supplier too, and sells a similar pack to pings. Going bigger with a pouch cell pack gives you longer lifespan than a smaller pouch cell pack. The headways should last in a smaller size, but knowing for sure will take some riding from those who bought em. I have 4500 miles on my 36v 20 ah ping now, and it's looking like 1000 cycles is not going to be hype. We'll know in about a year and a half whether I get more than 10,000 miles out of this pack and still have 15 mile range. ( 23 mile range now full speed)

you can't build a battery pack as cheap as they are selling them. i don't think they have free shipping, it's not ebay, but they do have the headway packs which are the best, and they have them cheaper than headway was selling them.

They will add in some shipping and import duty fees. When you order on-line they'll send an invoice via e-mail and spell it out and ask for payment via paypal or check. I'm still impressed with the deals though. Last time i checked (last week) their shipment had not yet arrived from overseas. Depending on what is ordered, they may or may not have it in stock at the moment.
