la Nina rears her ugly head

The fire departments, Plural, really went all out in the last 36 hours. The sky's were dark grey and ash everywhere around here for the last few days. But when the wind died down the planes, helicopters and fire trucks and firemen really went all out to knock down the fires in the hills. By this afternoon, the sky was blue and no more ash falling over everything. My sister and her husband still have a house. The fire got to a few hundred feet but was put out by the planes and helicopters. One of my friends who's house is undoubtedly gone has not responded to my calls. Nor has he responded to others. We are beginning to become very concerned by his "radio silence." He hasn't responded to anybody's calls, texts and emails.

PREP FOR A FIRE ?

wonder how much self defense against a fire a homeowner can do

we have a large pool now a koi pond and for hurricanes a generator
also a well with a pump 2'' el 220v and small honda gas pump
a small 1 1/2'' fire hose with nozel
in south fla ground water is shallow and unlimited

I have heard of some guys saving homes with a garden hose
but NOTHING about a fire prepped home owner with a bit of equip

what do you think ?
if you have a pool or well would you invest a 1k or a bit more
to be able to fight a fire with out the city FD

I got to go for a ride to enjoy the break in the rain and above normal temperatures. The grass is starting to turn green. Since we had 17” of rain earlier in the season the soil has pretty good moisture. It hasn’t rained since December so it’s starting to dry out.

That green sure looks good from here. We are still sitting on .13 inches of rain so far this season with no rain in sight.

However on the happy side my friend finally emerged. He was in a hotel in Santa Monica and not communicating with anyone. And, his house was saved by the El Monte fire department whom had driven in and parked a truck at the end of the street near my friends house They used the local creek as a water supply to save my friends house. They saved my friends house and the neighboring house. All the other houses around there are gone. So in one strange way, of the three friends I have living in the Palisades, two still have there houses when over 1200 other homes and buildings burned down up there.

So I go outside to start the clean-up from all the leaves and branches that blew off the trees during the Santa Ana winds and immediately kicked up a really nasty fine layer of ash that has coated everything outside. I started blowing off my driveway and sidewalk only to start choking on the ash from the fire. It didn't take long before I stopped leaving the job only partially done. This makes me sad. It's the time of year when I collect all the leaves from my ash trees and shred them to add to my compost barrels. I know a lot of the ash is from natural plants, but a lot of it is from all the synthetic stuff houses are made of these days so who knows what I might be adding to my compost.

Rain!!! We are actually getting some rain!!! Like maybe 1/2 inch if we are lucky!!!! :D

We have a "chance" of rain the next few days...but since most of them don't even list an amount, it will probably be like a single bird pissing on us from a mile up

Of course, this is my week off to try to get yard stuff done and try to get some of the new trike built, so murphy dictates that as soon as I try to get started on any of that it's going to start pouring for hours at a time. ;)

(some of the trike stuff I can do in a shed, but the yard stuff I'd have to do...in the yard, so.... :/ )

Some how we ended up with about 3/4 inch of rain over night which brought up our yearly total to 1.2 inches!!! That's 1.02 inches in the last 24 hours!!! :ROFLMAO:

Nuthin here, actually stayed clear overnight. Is now getting cloudy but not really there yet. Forecast changed so we might now get some sprinkles later on today. Maybe.

I-5 is closed over the Grapevine due to snow and ice. Snow should do a nice job of helping to put out the fires.

Total as of this morning 0.36” with a chance of showers for the next 24 hours means we could get a little more.
Suspect that it’s still snowing in the mountains as they are quite dark and surrounded by thick black clouds that resemble thunderstorms but would be thundersnow at that altitude.
