I recently found another competitor in 21700 size which seems to be soon available on mass market. It is on stock at QeenBattery. Also interesting is that it is cheaper than Samsung INR21700-48G with 4750mAh nominal capacity, where this LG H30 cell is 5000mAh. But still expensive in comparation with 18650.

Can't beat the prices for 18650.
Others dig LiPo and some go for Hobby King Multistar green packs.
I have never seen the format you talk about. Be nice to find a side by side comparison.

Yes, 21700 format or 21-70 by Tesla marking is supposed to replace 18650 cells in High Power and Energy applications in near future. Today all major battery manufacturers have this format in mass production.

LG INR21700H30 with 5000mAh
Samusng INR21700-48G and 48E with 4750mAh
Panasonic/Sanyo: "Tesla 21-70 cells" with 5000mAh
SONY/BMZ: US21700Vxx with 5000mAh

All of this are High Energy cells, so the max continuous discharge is limited to 10A. Only Samsung have already available for DIYers also High Power cells with +30A discharge rate, but of course with reduced capacity.
