The Kelly is really useless without programming it. Throttle lags sucks so much that i didn't even try. I do programming with an old Laptop from 2004 (Pentium4, Windows XP home) i got for free years ago. Works really straight forward.

It s working with an eBay 2$ usb/rs232 serial and adequated drivers on win 7, ask the drivers to seller, maybe you need to assign yourself the port number in the win settings if not well installed
The brand I was talking about that worked on win8 was EasySync, more specific http://www.easysync-ltd.com/product/535/es-u-1002-a.html. But all RS232 adapters with FTDI chip inside should work.

@crossbreaks...I'm yet to plug my Kelly in and program it, things nuts straight out of the box, I guess it depends on the model and firmware installed, I did get the benefit of customised firmware coded specifically for my modified motor, not what you know tiz who you know sometimes teehehe...

AJ, my kelly has this horrible ramp up/ramp down thing from the box and I've not yet managed to communicate on my win 8 laptop I tested all the drivers it's really a problem with prolific chips and win 8 :/
I could bring my bike in the flat and use the desktop but I don't have my new batt anyway ! :| I will borrow the converter we have at work I think next week.
From the limited peg time I had on this bike, I feel like I can achieve a lot with his bike !!

All chromo exepted the rear box section and the sheetmetal. The next frames will be Tig welded!

how cool is that?! I just wanted to ask where you got the rectangle tubes... i searched the whole net but found nothing out of chromo.
Now i am thinking again about 4 linkers since they need no rectangle tubes
Anyway, i am not an expert for welding.. any idea which wire i use for S355 (sheets) and chromo? Guess it will be the same as for S235 and chromo?

He said the box section (rectangle tube) is the only part that is not 4130. If you are not going to heat treat the frame it is best to use ER70-S2 or ER80-SD2 filler rod. If you are going to heat treat then I'd consider using 4130 filler but still not 100% necessary.
Not sure if they ship international but these guys have a few different sizes of rect tubing that might work for you crossbreak. I have bought from these folks in the past. Here is their Euro site.

There is very little point in getting too deeply into material composition unless you are going to do stress analysis based on real world forces gathered from data logging and design to have the least possible mass of your material for the desired purpose. if you are just going to make a box section swingarm using the that looks strong enough it will never bend approach based on experience and judgement from having seen hundreds of different ones during your life then I would imagine mild steel would suffice like Adam has done here.
I have built many things, bicycle frames, motorcycle frames, car chassis etc using this approach. you develop the skills to know what is enough for the job. With proper design far less may be sufficient but there is no point getting technical in material choice if you don't know what is required.

Not to mention that it seems he has the skills and environment to whip up a new one at any point.
I'd be more concerned with materials if I was buying a bike than I would be if I had the ability to fab my own.

stiffneess of chromo and mild steel is the same for sure. And i want it to be stiff anyway so i think more about mild steel, which seems to be perfect for a prototype. Still i do some stress analysis at certain points like suspension linkage and headtube. When using a structure work, most of the tubes and links can only collapse if they cripple or the weld breaks. A CAD program specially made for such structures would be nice, 2-D would be sufficient.
I recently helped my son fit a bigger intercooler on his car, he hung this from the reinforcing beam behind the front bumper, at first glance this looked like any other sheet metal pressing but drilling it was a different matter, I have a set of quality cobalt drills that are sharpened professionally in a machine with diamond faced cutters, they look beautiful! but they would not touch this cromo steel, so I disagree that cromo and mild steel are similar in their properties!crossbreak said:

Good design transfers as much force as possible into tension or compression rather than bending, greatly reducing the need for large cross section tubing.
