[Edit: Thanks for all the feedback so far. I'll keep updating the post! 11/20/2015]
Let me start by saying I’m new, but I’ve been reading a ton on this board. Thank you all for your contribution to the community. Thanks to you, I already have a board on order with Ollin and hub motors from Carvon! The lead time (and budget) is high, but i'ts gonna be a beast of a ride.
In the meantime, I wanted to make something on the side to keep myself busy. As a side project, I wanted to hear the community’s advice on a parts list for a very low budget board. It’s nothing fancy, but I hope my post can introduce the e-skate hobby to a wider audience by keeping the price low. I’d like to make a video, tutorial, and a parts list of where to purchase the parts once it’s all done. It doesn’t have to go fast or far. The goal is just a slow casual ride (no need for 30 mph) and short distance (no need for 15 miles distance).
Here’s what I have so far (click on each item's hyperlink and it'll take you to the actual product):

Some notes:
- General Range = 4.5 miles
I heard from Chaka (from Ollin) that you can divide the Wh by 10 and that’s approximately the distance by km range. The battery is 5000 mah at 14.8 volts. According to online calculator, this should net 74 Wh. (https://milliamps-watts.appspot.com/). So, according to estimates, approximately 7.4 km or 4.5 miles range right? I’m not looking for anything precise. Just a general guess.
- General Speed = 13.4 mph
According to kkEdlund calculator (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1E2IwhmAP52gG5xovH7WG8sp5qsey3iLWZwv_bIKaYUQ/edit#gid=0), a 280Kv motor with 12/36 gear ratio should be able to achieve 13.4 mph.
- General Torque = ???
I can’t find a clear answer to this. I’ve seen someone say low gear ratio means higher torque? If so, then I should choose 12/36 over 16/36 if I want more torque in exchange for lower speed? (BTW, I weigh 150 lbs)
- 60 AMP 12-24 DC Fuse / Switch
I read someone used this as a switch to disconnect the power and also protect the ESC. Seemed like a cheap solution with added safety.
- Voltmeter Panel
Same thing. Saw someone use this as a way to read their battery status. Cheap solution with added utility.
- Save More?
Does anyone see anywhere else I can lower the budget even more?
- Correct More?
Does anyone see a problem? I love wisdom through correction.
