Damn Ken, reading what you came up for your shock settings, you got your shock dialed. Yah, rebound IMO, is the aspect to focus on. The best way I found to dial it is in the woops. With hubmotors, you want it slow enough that it doesn't return fast, but fast enough so your rear is extended before the next woop. Let me guess, when you had your rear too slow, it felt like a hard tail when you hit the second and consecutive bumps? If its too slow, you bike will let you know thats for sure. Rider sag and front end are also critical, but more for handeling as your geomtery can be effected by rear sag. But your sag ratio from the front and rear is close to what I have as well. My rider sag is probably right at 3 inches rear, and front at 1.75-2 inches. Having the front rebound slightly quicker than the rear helps big time on down hill woops that have the tendency to toss the rider over the bars. Sounds to me like you got all that worked out. In fact, for Jay to comment on how good your bike worked and being surprised by it, its got to be good to go. He dind't say shit about my setup in Yosemite. Of course, I got set up for guys in the 230-255 pound weight range. Not the 160-180 range that Jay would be happy with. Glad you are happy with it. I just went through and re read your build. I forgot that you increased the head tube immensly for strenght. Probablyt he only flex you go are where the stanchions and bottom crown meet. So, when you going to go the 4065 route?

Rick
4065 haha.. I'm really looking at the raptor or considering a dirt jump build with 17x3 sr244 rc mid drive.
I have enough on my plate for now.
I just replaced the rim on the monster. Just truing it up now :)
The suspension... Well Rix thank you sir , your advice along the way made the difference. With the weight and Jay, I'd say I like my bikes more saggy in suspension than most but his 10kg less weight would probably cancel that out and make it seem well tuned/ normal.
Thanks for reading again Rix. Most ppl flick through that's why I put up a few pictures and vids.

Hello everyone, I’m the one who crashed the bike. Who would have known that bumping into a random dude in a pub would lead to the mayhem that followed? :) I want to say first of all that breaking my collar-bone was not pendragon8000’s fault in any way. I take full responsibility for what happened and I should have behaved more safely.

It all started when I was sitting outside the pub having a drink. It was crowded and there were a limited number of tables so pendragon8000 approached me and asked if he could sit at mine. We got chatting and discovered that we have similar interests in music. I was also very impressed with his bike as well because I’d studied a bit of electronic engineering. We then proceeded to get our way through a lot of beer. He bought me a jug and then I reciprocated by buying him a jug.

We didn’t get the chance to exchange numbers because my phone had run out of power and pendragon8000’s phone was also running low as well. For this reason we started looking for a power-point. He had the idea of buying another 6-pack of beer and going down to the park where we could chill, plug our electronics into an outdoor one, and listen to some music.

When we arrived at the park, we then took the eBike for a spin. Pendragon8000 was speeding around the park, getting air as he flew over the little hills. He lost his glove in the darkness, so I got on the bike and carefully cruised around and found it again for him. I then took another faster ride and it was INCREDIBLY fun and REALLY addictive. After cruising around, we parked the bike near the pond. We just chilled, plugged in the phones and the laptop, and listened to some tracks like we had planned. Oh, and we drank some more. I was about to go and took the fateful decision to go for one last ride.

I am a living example that it is not a good idea to drink-cycle. I didn’t have any inhibitions and I really twisted the throttle. The bike is almost silent so I felt like I was flying. It was incredibly fun. There are a lot of little hills in the parklands and I pulled up to one and stopped. I didn’t know how much power I would need to make it to the top. I just went too hard on the throttle and overestimated the amount of power I would need to make it up the slope. I twisted the throttle and then it happened. I think the grass was slippery with dew and it all just happened so quickly. The bike was instantly whipped from underneath me and I was ploughed into the side of the hill. The good thing is that I crashed only a second after I had opened up the throttle rather than falling off at full speed.

I was in complete shock. I struggled to my feet in a daze. I stumbled in a circle, hoping that I could just walk it off. It was then that I realised that my left arm was floppy and the collar bone was clunking and crunching.

“pendragon8000!!!!!!!!!!!!,” I yelled.

“Whaaaat!”

“I think I broke my collar-bone!”

Once I realised what had happened, the pain really kicked in hard so I lay down on the side of the hill. By this stage, it was really starting to hurt.
Luckily a good Samaritan came over and called an ambulance. Even though the hospital was close by I knew that I was in no state to walk there. I appreciated the random dude and pendragon8000 talking to keep my mind off the pain.

We had to wait for quite a while. I later learned that the ambulance was late because it had been circling the park trying to find us.
In the meantime, pendragon8000 and the random dude kept me occupied with conversation and some beatboxing. The random dude asked me whether I like The Wire and the Walking Dead.

“I like the comics but not the tv series,” I said feebly. I don’t really watch tv so I couldn’t say much.

“Would it help if I beatboxed?” asked pendragon8000.

I thought for a moment and then thought “f... it, why not.”

“Okay.” I said.

When pendragon8000 started beat-boxing, I realised that the rhythm was playing in time with the intense throbbing pain in my shoulder. I thought, “F..., I think I need something a little bit more relaxing.” I didn’t stop him though because the random dude was so impressed.

Then paramedics finally arrived. They gave me this thing that looked like a big e-cigarette. They told me to drag on it like a cigarette. I took as many drags as possible but it didn’t really ease the pain, it just made me high. They then asked whether I could sit up. It was very difficult because it engages all the muscles in the neck and they pulled on the collar bone. I was clenching my teeth and crying out in pain.

I was then put on a stretcher and taken to hospital. They gave me a stronger painkiller which was a derivative of morphine. When I was lying in my bed waiting to be x-rayed, a police officer came over with a note-pad and introduced himself.

“You have the right to remain silent but anything you do say can be used as evidence,” he said.

He then proceeded to ask me a number of questions. He asked me about the bike but he was particularly interested to know how much I had been drinking.

“How many drinks have you had tonight?”

I thought about it and realised that I had lost count.

“Um... about 8 standard drinks,” I replied.

“Have you been drinking the beer that we found in pendragon8000 bag?”.

“Yes, I have.”

After the questioning, I was breath-tested and I blew 0.075.

I stayed in hospital in the early hours of April Fool’s Day. They took x-rays and made me a sling before discharging me at about 4:00 AM. I couldn’t roll any cigarettes so I bought a pack to calm my nerves. I didn’t want to spend money on a taxi so I decided to wait in the city for the first bus.

I then spent the next five days at my parent’s home and they helped me prepare meals until I got a bit better.

A couple of days late, I saw my mates at a BBQ. I was irritable because I was doped up on painkillers and I felt ashamed that I could do something so stupid. I explained the situation to my mates. They gave me advice that was a lot more pessimistic than things turned out to be.

“You were riding in the park, so technically you’re out of the jurisdiction of the traffic police,” my mate said. “The guy should really try to get his bike back as soon as possible. The cops are corrupt as f... It’ll end up in the evidence locker and just disappear.”

I didn’t know the full situation and this brought about quite a bit of stress. I thought that pendragon8000’s bike might be permanently confiscated and I thought that I might get a court appearance or a large fine.

When I returned home, the cops had dropped by and left a calling card under my door. I reckon my neighbours now think I’m a criminal

I spent a lot of time stressing about pendragon8000’s bike. I remember him telling me that it was about $2000 and I knew that it was his pride and joy. When we were at the pub, he was supervising it like it was his own child. I had forgotten his surname so I couldn’t look him up on Facebook either.

This story actually worked out okay in the end. The Chief Constable of the Traffic Police called me back and was totally cool about it. He seemed more concerned about making sure that I hadn’t sustained any other injuries apart from the collar bone. He said he knew that I had drunk in his words “a couple of beers”. He said that there would be no charges laid and that K’s bike was legal and had been returned to him. This was a huge relief. He also said that pendragon8000 had given them permission to give me his number so I wrote that down as well. I have far greater respect for the cops after this experience.

Far from putting me off eBikes (in more ways than one) this experience has actually inspired an interest in them and I would love to build one in the future. I would also like to get further involved in this forum and gain more knowledge.

The way that pendragon8000 treated me on the night was a perfect example of how to treat another human being. He stayed by my side and did his best to keep me calm. I apologised to him and told him that it was not his fault, it was mine. He said “Don’t worry man. I’ll do whatever I can for you.” pendragon8000 is a great bloke and the way he handled the situation was exemplary. He gave permission to the cops for them to give me his number which I greatly appreciated. He expressed genuine concern for me, and was more far more worried about my well-being than the fact that I had damaged his bike and led to it being confiscated. Even though I only met him on that night, I now consider him a good mate because of how he acted towards me.

Nice story Crash Gordon, and I hope everyone that reads this notices that Crash's great story started with
It all started when I was sitting outside the pub having a drink
because no great story ever started with "I was eating a salad or drinking Koolaide with my grandma at the retirement home".

Rick

Hey! There he is :D
"Crash Test Dummy" haha nice one.
Thanks for posting your side of the story / perspective of events. That fills in a few blanks for sure.

I'm surprisedyou BAL was only .075 . Maby the pain made your heart rate go up and process it quicker. Must have been about 8 standard drinks as you told the cop.

Spinning the wheel on dewy grass is definitely something to be careful of. I once did the same thing on dry marble near festival center. I was lucky not to stack. Had to stop bike and do a super fast big step out so I wouldn't ninja roll. Ninja roll wasn't preferable due to stubbies of beer in back pack :|

If you want catch up and go for a sober ride we can talk ebikes, music, philosophy etc and look at an ebike build parts list so you can visualize what you're working toward.

I also thought the cops were quite professional I must say. Pity the ambulance couldn't find us early.

Stay in touch CTD ;)

Re: riding today
I'm going off road with my kung Fu teacher / mate today. Should be good opportunityfor some vid. New rear rim is a dream its so smooth.

haha it goes without saying that yours would be dialed in right. I guess with Ken's there was a good chance with cutting and shutting the frame + changing the front and rear shocks that it could have come out sub-optimally. I think you're also walking a finer line tuning a shorter travel mtb rather than something with long travel like a stealth.

Ebike Ambassador Pendragon has done a good job. See Ken, I told you he'd fine his way here :)

@ Crash, so, are going to build yourself an Ebike? Since you are on the forum, seems like the logical next step.

ha! good to hear from ya mate, and that your doing ok given the crash, particularly regarding the fuzz. Nice to hear there are sane, nice cops out there. I did much the same with pendragon the weekend after, though minus the crash + riding my own bike. 'tis 'intoxicating' indeed :p :p. You've got a good amount of ebike building experience available in adelaide (and of course heaps on ES) once you're back on your feet and looking to make your own too.

Yes, the plan is to build an eBike Rick. I just need to make a "to-do list" and understand the theory before I put it into practice. I'll need to save up for the parts as well. I'm glad I'll have so much experience to draw on in the ebike community. I'm sure Ken and I can discuss it when we catch up next

Cool sTory! WElcome to the club, i think you'll find most serious bikers have broken thier collarbone(s), and it is always a great story!!

Beers+new blokes+ebikes = me really wondering if i should have let him ride it, but glad i made them put on the fullface.....so far i havent been burnt. seen alot of rash, bike came back dead a few times, but everyone came back, that really feels good to me!!! ive had several tense minutes of waiting for my baby to return but she always comes back to me.

I'm guessing he's busy or doesnt know. i will try connecting a throttle to the ca and the controller and see if i can come up with something.

my multimeter says 25K ohm from ca direct plug throttle wire to the circled diode.

any help would be much apriciated.
Edit
Lyen DID reply. I just missed it somehow. He is most helpfull

Thanks pendragon for the good documentation. I have a space 1k resistor. Don't like these Small soldiering jobs but have improved

Cool. I was going to say its not a heaps tricky job, but may seem daunting having to undo the fet block etc. Try not to get heat transfer compound all on your fingers. Add some extra if you have some, will help keep the fets cool.

I haven't used heat transfer compound or heard of it. Still need to change out those spade type connectors for bullets.

they were running warm to touch in the small test ride today.

on the phase wires? i imagine that would get warm. my battery ones dont get hot with spade lugs. you kow the deal, battery amps is less than half of phase.

Yah Jay, with suspension, the less travel there is, the harder to find a "universal" suspension setting that can be lived with. Can be done, once the parameters and limitations of what you are working with are known.

Sweet Crash, yah between the forum and some face time with Ken, you wont' have any unsolved problems that may arise with your build.

Rix thanks for the pic, but that's not the one you ride at work is it? I am disappointed with your uniform, I was hoping you looked more like one of my favorite shows when I was kid:
cd_chips_vol1.jpg

Crashtester Epic entrance to the forum. Can't think of anyone having a better start. Thank you for so much detail. Especially how the stack happened. I still wonder, did you flip the bike? pulled throttle it kicked you back onto your back? Because if it was wet then I imagine you just fell onto your side with no relation to throttle. It could have been an ordinary fall on a bicycle where you step hard on the pedal, it doesn't move forward as you expect and you actually almost go forwards over the handle bars...

Ah Chips!!! 7Mary3 and 7Mary4. Loved that show. DId you ever see the reunion episode where Ponch and John are riding Beemers? Much much better than those 70s era Kz1000 Kawis.

Awe the GPZ1100, that was the 4 valved modernized version of the old KZ1000s. Very fast bike. In 1988, I bought a used Honda version of the GPZ1100, the 1983 CB1100F. That thing was fast, and the speedo stopped at 140MPH. In top gear at 140 indicated, I was turning 8500 RPM. Even though the needle didn't move past 140mph, I got it up to redline which was 9500 RPM full tuck with a tail wind. All kinds of scary with no fairing. It went straight great, didn't handle worth a shit in the twisty. Man was I a dumb shit.

Yaaay CrashTestDummy, welcome to the Forum, mate :D

Hah RIX :D I had the CB1100F's baby brother, the CB750F (Crap... when I was 20, ermigerd, I am SO OLD!!!)... my first "REAL" roadbike once I was off the then AUS restriction of 250cc or under for three years whilst on a probation licence

It was the sole reason I got a car licence, within a year I was 1 demerit point off losing my bike licence due to umm.. a hyperactive throttle hand... :D

Bought a 1966 VW beetle which kept me WELL below any chance of speeding :D

Not all speed-related interactions with the PoPo were negative tho

(Sorry PD a bit off a tangent and OT...)

I was working shift work, with a 12:30 AM start, a 10km ride from home to work on a major arteriel road that was basically empty at this time..

Knew the road well and had done a bit of real (racetrack based) motorcycle racing... there was one Glorious sweeping bend, apex on the top of a shallow rise, up hill entry, down hill exit, 4 empty lanes of tarmac, perfect for a full power Sweeeeeeping turn absolutely flat knakcer (no idea at what speed but 10/10s that the bike would put out).

On this fateful night, I took the corner like a champ, and was winding back on the throttle when I glanced in the mirror to see a flash of blue and red as the cop car behind me lit up and gave chase.

No point denying my errant ways, so I popped the bike upright, and brought it to a serious stop as hard as I could, and glanced over my right shoulder (Aus) to see the cop car totally lock up and perform a full 360 spin past me and my stationary bike, before pulling up in front of me.

The cop reefed open his door, and came marching out towards me, roaring and yelling...

"If I Ever See You Pull some Shit Like That Again, I'll tear you a new arsehole... Now get on Your Effing Bike and Get The Eff Out of Here."

Then he jumped back in his car and drove off.

I was a little more leisurely on the rest of my ride to work.

:D

Well, I stumbled across this website once, they had this video of a nude Segway race. And what do you know, every one of the contestants had good. . . Er, I just don't talk like that.

But yeah, I could see where you could succeed with all that.
