My Amped bike is telling me something.

I have trying off and on to ride up this very steep hill in low gear. Then I tried my biggest motor...the 750 watt, 36 volt Amped bike and half way up it shuts down. So I walked the rest of the way up, reboot, and it starts up fine. I think that was due to too much heat and a protective mechanism although I don't have any info about that. Anyway, if the big motor can't make it, I am glad I learned about this before I burned one of my smaller motors out because they don't shut off. From now on, I will just walk my bikes up the steep hill. Has anyone burned up a motor climbing a hill?
 
Plenty of people have burnt up motors on steep hills. At least I know I have read of a few myself.
Yea more specs on what is powering your motor and is it the stock controller ?
 
i don't think it is the motor. he said reset, of course no idea what he meant, but he may have shut down the BMS and by reset he means that he unplugged the pack. that woulda turned the output back on in the BMS. who knows.
 
How steep was the hill?

I have used a Amped Bikes DD hub motor to climb up over 15% grades with out trouble, however at 48V.

At 36V, that motor isn't really able to climb the steep stuff too well at least with the stock controller.

If you up the amps at 36V it could work, but sounds like your battery's BMS shut down.
 
Good questions. I have the stock Amped bike front hub motor with the stock Li battery in their ad. The kit sells for something like $800. There are two buttons, one on the battery tube and the other on the handlebars. Both have to be on for the bike to go. When the bike stopped, the battery level lights went off and of course there was no power. I turned both buttons off, than at the top of the hill, I turned both back on, the lights came back on and everything was OK. There is nothing to read unless there is stuff on the controller inside a bag under the back of the seat....just the two buttons I mentioned, a thumb throttle, and 3 lights that show you it is on and the battery level...green amber, red. 750W, 36volt. Can you tell I didn't do the conversion? A bike shop did. The hill is steep, but I don't know the grade. My daughter who is 15 and weighs 110 lbs can ride any of the ebikes up it though with motor assist. I actually have ridden the two other ebikes up that hill myself but they don't sound too great. They do not have cutoffs on them though like the Amped bike apparently does. Anyway, I consider myself lucky I have not burned something up. I just walk the bikes up the hill now. It's all exercise anyway and that's why I ride the ebikes. If I want power and speed, I take my Zero S, Ninja 250, or Vespa 300. All three of those accelerate all the way up that hill. I didn't get any paperwork except some instr. about how to hook up the charger with the Amped Bike. It is a great system. The only thing is it goes so fast, that I find myself not pedaling much, hence no exercise, except for my hill of course. The other two bikes aren't as powerful and are slower, so I pedal more with those. Thanks for your replies.
 
What you have is a 500 watt motor, Ampedbikes sells them as the 500-750 watt motors, meaning 500 watts normal, 750 peak. But that peak is limited by the controller. The motor is good for 2000 watts easy. Its a powerful motor in it's own right, as you are aware, but for comparison purposes its a 500 watt motor.

I'm betting you pulled too many amps through the battery's BMS and it popped off. Resetting it will cure that, like you described. No Inferon controller has thermal protection that I'm aware of, but if it did, it wouldn't behave that way. it would shut off until the temp dropped down to acceptable levels. that would take more time than a reset.
