New Bafang Crank-Drives

Thanks to everyone who has donated their time and knowledge on this site and thread. I finished my first build, converting my 2003 Giant NRS-1. I purchased a 350W BBS-01 and AllCell 36V 10Ah battery through Letric cycles. LeGrand was very patient, answering all the questions of a newbie. He also sold me two deep set sockets that fit the lockrings, so I was able to very securely tighten those down. Install went smoothly. Hardest part was getting the old crank and bottom bracket off.

I have used the bike to commute to work 4 times since I finished it last week. The ride is 17 miles roundtrip. When I charge the battery, my Kill-a-watt meter says it uses 190 watt-hours, which is about half the battery capacity, so I am using approximately 11.2 Whr/mile. Battery never really gets warm, either charging or riding. Bike weighs 44 lbs. I weigh 145 lbs. I have no problem getting to 22-24 mph on flat terrain. I go about 12-13 mph up a 9% grade hill. Motor is really quiet. I hear nothing if going more than 15 mph; wind in your ears is more than the motor sound. Asked a non-electric biking friend if they noticed anything new about my bike. Had to point out the motor after a few moments of silence.

I am trying to find a good solution to mount the battery in the triangle. Best idea I have had so far is a custom frame bag. Comments/suggestions welcome.

:D You might get better and more specific suggestions if folks knew where in the world you are. :D
Budgets are also very helpful.

Sorry. I am in the San Francisco area. I found this guy who does custom frame bags. Not cheap ($110 US) but could be worth it if it fits the frame really well (http://cleavelandmountaineering.blogspot.com/p/custom-frame-bags.html) Would be great it I could find one of those battery boxes that would fit on my frame, but all the ones I can find are too big.

Check out this link to a great triangle bag, made for batteries. . .

I'm building wooden bike frames and would like one of these

mentioned at http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=50104&start=2075#p879575. I've formed the view there is less compromises than adding a motor to a normal frame and it looks to make frame building easier as well because the bottom bracket is the most difficult part. I've tried to source it from cellman and got the response:-
"Sorry, I can’t arrange that particular kit. We have to order in large quantities, it’s not possible to arrange single kits like this. It is likely not even available yet."

It looks like I can't get it. Any ideas on how it might be possible?

I used this Ibera Medium Triangle Frame Bag building up my GF's townie bike below. It holds a 48v 11ah pack (13s4p 29E cells) just fine - and only $17 US!

I test fit the same bag for my forthcoming BBS02 build on my Motobecane Fantom which looks to have a similar frame as your Giant. I'll be adding a couple of extra velcro straps on the downtube.

Have been watching for 102 pages so here goes! Bought and received BB02-750 from LeGrand and although a little wait on the battery all is well, sort of. I am a steel framebuilder and plan to build for the BB02 or similar but for the learning experience. This motor has gone to a Bianchi Imola steel 700c road bike. Conversion went well, first ride great, but battery will not charge, charger(ok). OK--Battery problem call LeGrand he will rectify problem. Great, only long time to fix problem. I understand. Loved the one ride I had on my set up. --- 48x9---11/32 set up. No problems shifting even under power, with common sense. Starter with less than half charge on the battery and did 10 miles and ok.
Now CAD designing frame and am hung between 26 vrs 700 wheel size. Dics either way. Only ridden 700's but plan to do some gravel on the ebike? Thought's 700--26?? For EBike I big 5'10" 200lbs. Love all the info on this post, THANKS ALL

Depends, would my view on the wheel size but you would probably be better of with an OEM motor like this as well http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=50104&start=2525#p896750.

How about 650B? Supposed to be the best of both worlds. Tire selection is a bit limited but improving all the time. And with 48/9 gearing and 700C/29er tires, you'd end up with pretty tall gearing.

I'm planning on building my first ebike with a BBS02-750W combined with a N360 Nuvinci. I recently noticed that California E-Bike started selling 130mm chainring adapters. Would running something like 55t or 53t chainring with the N360 be to high for the N360 or the BBS02-750W? I'll mostly be riding on flat ground so i'm more interested in getting a higher speed.

The 750W pulls like a horse. I'm doubtful the N360 will hold up to the power. Be interested to read about your experience if you do. I original looked into a N360 but dismissed it as not being able to handle the power.

Hi,

any experiences with this custom sprocket? I am thinking about try it on my bbs 750W, original sprocket seems very huge for 10 rear gear system and next issue - original chain is short with bafang sprocket.

Eride makes an adapter so you can put whatever size chain wheel on it you want.

That battery looks to be like one of Allcells new Summit batteries. Havent found a vendor for those yet.
Thanks for the reply but it's the motor with integrated bottom bracket that I want. If you look around there are a lot of motors with integrated bottom brackets but none seem to be purchasable. I'd prefer the Bafang because it is probably the same mechanically as the well regarded BBS and probably affordable but would consider others.

BMSbattery does stock the bofeili mid drive Ken. Same drive as the failed bioplanet bike that Kresimir Budisnki ripped everyone off of. There is some power limit info about, and drawings. (I think it was integrated)

The Bafang intergrated bottom bracket is still in development. It is a torque sensor motor 250w. Aimed at the European market to compete with Bosch. Im not sure you are going to find it available through a second party for a while yet. Aimed at OEM.

User Schwibsi might have battery boxes like that one.

The Aldi chain of stores (90% groceries and 10% various household items), has begun carrying a generic China-bike with the Bafang-BBS01 in pedelec mode. Its sold in the EU only so far, and uses the legal 25-kph/16-MPH, and 250W/36V system. Easy to hack and upgrade to 22-amps, so...36V X 22A = 792W?.

Interesting choice of frames. I changed bikes to not have the motor in that position. Certainly workable and I had other issues that eventually made me abandon my Trek Pure build, but I am happier with the motor being above the low point of the chainwheel. It just seems vulnerable to me. I have a lot of concrete curbs to deal with and that's to unprotected. I'd sooner bang a chainwheel than the motor. We'll see how tough the motor casings are soon enough.

Copied this post from the faults and fixes thread hoping someone will see it here and have a thought or comment.
...................................................................

What does it mean if you have conductivity between 2 of the 3 phase wires on the motor? I have no conductivity from and phase wire to the motor side wall but I do from the yellow to blue wire. Does this mean they are shorted together?

This is a Bosch motor but the mounting is much better, picking up the points you are raising.
